Legg has traveled all hours of the day and night, in all kinds of weather, to care for the people of our community. Because of his unselfish service for over a half a century it is our desire to dedicate the final yearbook of Elmer A. Wolfe High School to him. Not onlyhas he been a fine physician and an active member of many medical groups but he has broadened his field of service to be a member of the County Board of Education several times, and has served as Mayor of Union Bridge. Some of the members of the Class of 1959 were brought into the world by Dr. Legg. Many of us have sought his care. He has made a lasting contribution to our community. We are pleased to honor him. gn 19 Principal ,S Message iq 4 Seniors of '59: You are the youth of a fortunate generation because others before you forged ahead and brought many changes through the past centuries. New worlds lie before you in this push-button age of marvelous inventions and discoveries. Yet, you should be reminded that machines do not make themselves--they are the result of the wisdom and vision of men. The marvels of today are enjoyed only because of the efforts of those who preceded us. You, then, are challenged to make acontribution from your generation to help answer the questions of tomorrow. Your challenge will be mountainous since you face a world exempli- fied by space ships and artificial satellites, yet, I believe in the youth of today and look forward to your future. I would like you to go forth from high school anticipating that the years of your generation will experience many new marvels, and that you will and ought to be a part of this ex- perience. MRS MARGARET PRICE Staff Wayne Reed Joyce Lescalleet and Wayne Myers History of Elmer A. Woye School The new Elmer A. Wolfe High School was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1931. The following spring was a joyous occasion for the Class of '3'2. They were the first to graduate from the new high school. Mr. Elmer A. Wolfe, slated to be the first principal, died early in 1931, so Robert Unger was appointed to this highly important office. The first faculty included Elizabeth Mitten Mer- rill, Clarence Knox, Carolyn Bullock, Pauline Fuss, Gertrude Jamison. Helen Baker Bowman, Philip Royer Emma Myers Rizer, Mildred House, Marian Lloyd ELMER A. WOLFE Royer. Mary Ann Marsh Crawmer, Dorothy Nordwall Carmen Delaplane, Grayson Shank, Mrs. Mary Reese and Elizabeth Oates, We are proud to say that Mrs. Helen B. Bowman and Mr. Grayson Shank are still on the faculty of Elmer A. Wolfe School. From the first year until 1950, there were only eleven grades: seven years of elementary and four years of high school. The Class of '50, which ordinarily would have graduated after eleven years of schooling, became the first class to remain in school twelve years under the new State Department of Education ruling requiring twelve years of education. This graduation class, therefore, became the Class of '51. Since then, we have had six years of elementary, three years of junior high and three years of senior high school. It was also in 1950 that the new addition was built, giving elementary teachers the big, spacious rooms needed for the smaller children. The Class of '33 received the first Commercial diplomas to be given at a Union Bridge School. Agriculture and language have not always been taught, but have been included in the curriculum for the past several years, Athletics, which play a high part in our school life and are now required, were once just extracurricular. Since music is also considered important, it, too, has been taught throughout the years, The student body at Elmer Wolfe is headed by the Student Council, which gives letters and certificates to deserving students. Next year, the newly-built Francis Scott Key High School will open its doors for grades nine through twelve, where the fine traditions of Elmer A. Wolfe School will be continued. li 1.-xg,-X PAST G PAPUA TES C fl 527 1 Through the years . . . cz procession o o asses . . MISS PAULINE FUSS a beloved teacher for mam yearb The Class 0 1924 .
