The selection of four rising seniors into the honorary fraternity is made prior to the cl college year by the four senior members who constitute the order. Membership in the Senior Order of Gnomes is considered the highest honor which can at Wofford College. class have ose of each be attained ClIAKI I.S BARRETT BILL REID 30 JACKIE MEADORS OFFICERS SAMMY GLENN President JACKIE MEADORS Vice-President PAUL REINARTZ Secretnry ROBERT McCULLY Treasurer JACK HAMBRICK Historian SAMMY CLENN PAUL REINARTZ ROBERT McCULLY JACK HAMBRICK THE SENIOR CLASS With the thrill of graduation, the grips and moans of the past four years become insignificant. Though many of us won ' t admit it, we have a secret desire to prolong our days here at the school we have grown to love. Many will remember the social life of the big dances, parties, and the informal get-togethers in the canteen, which in our senior year was moved to the basement of Green Hall. The dances were greatly improved in our senior year through the inauguration of the Dance Association. We, the class of ' 55, can look back and be proud of our outstanding football, basketball, and baseball teams. Several of the highlights were the wins over Furman in football, the outstanding playing of Daddy Neal in basketball, and the winning of the Little Four Championship by the baseball team. We hope that the face lifting of the Main Building will set the pattern for Wofford ' s second century, and we hope that our class will follow in the successful tradition of the classes preceding us. As usual our class will be represented in the fields of medicine, education, religion, business, science, and military. Whatever their chosen field, we like to think that we have the potential leaders of tomorrow. 31 SENIORS BATES, BILL Converse, S. C. A.B. — Education Block W BASS, BILL EDWARD Shelby, V. C. What amazes us most of all about this thing of being Wofford men is how we lived until we found out about ' •The Zoo. The Rock, and The Hill. We had to make up for lost time. Confidentially. I don ' t think we will, but it ' s nice trving. Besides we ' ve got nothing to worry about except exams, classes, pop tests, and money. Oh well! Ce Qui Sera, Sera! As usual everyone was tense and excited, for as anyone knows it is quite an experience to enter upon a college campus for the first time. Everything seems so mixed-up and confused. It takes a few months to figure out exactly what is happening. With the starting of classes all began to fall into place, and a degree of peace of mind was once again achieved. With the forming of new friendships, the feeling of not belonging began to disappear. Memories of home, high school, and the girls left behind slowly came to fade into the background, atid the rcaii .alinn was ours that we had entered into a new and different type of life: something even better than that which we had known. We were a smart class; so it did not take long for us to catch onto all the tricks, and pretty soon we were trying to outsmart the profs, but we soon realized that there is no shortcut to education. Our boys took to college ' like a duck to water, and were soon taking a very active part in campus activities. Great things are already expected of some. With the dream of becoming sophomores foremost in our minds, we look for- ward to the next year. Since ratting has returned, a word of warning— LOOK OUT, FRESHMEN! . . aaJ4 off ss 58 Allen, Edward Dudley Spartanburg, S. C. Arnette, Wilbur Dillon, S. C. Arledge, James Edward Tryon, N. C. PHI BETA KAPPA was founded on December 5, 1776, at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. It was the first society t o have a Greek letter name. From that small beginning in one of the cradles of the American nation and in its transplantation to another cradle of that nation, the colleges of New England, the society has spread out and covered the entire nation and become one of the most honored societies of the world. Over one hundred and fifty chapters are now in existence. The Wofford Chapter of PHI BETA KAPPA, Beta of South Carolina, was chartered in January of 1941. The Charter was granted to the holders of the PHI BETA KAPPA key who were officially connected with Wofford College at that time. It is one of the two chapters in South Carolina. During the past decade, the local chapter had held firmly to the high ideals and purposes for which PHI BETA KAPPA was founded. The Motto of the society is that famous epigram of the Master Teacher, Ye Shall Know The Truth, and The Truth Shall Make You Free. JACK HAMBRICK President 74 JIM BARRETT President Blue Key had its beginning at the University of Florida in 1924. As an honor society dedicated to service, it appealed to men in other colleges and became very widespread. Wof- ford, it is believed, received its chapter in 1927. Blue Key is composed of prominent juniors and seniors who are selected on the basis of scholarship, character, per- sonality, and leadership in campus organizations by unani- mous vote of the fraternity. Blue Key has always been active in sponsoring better relations with Wofford ' s rival colleges, and this year it has added to its projects the sponsorship of the annual high school weekend. Since Nu Chapter reappeared on the Wofford Campus on April 18 and 14 of 1951, it has seen a steady growth until it is now one of the largest fraternities on the campus. The brothers have es- tablished a reputation for their harmonious and brotherly manifestations. Which goes to prove that the experts can be wrong. The Terriers fooled everyone by winning the Little Three Championship, missing an undefeated season by a field goal and an extra- point, and soundly trouncing the Purple Hurricane in Sirrine Stadium. Coach Snidow, his entire staff, and all the boys who played their hearts out, deserve our deepest thanks for making Wofford look good on the gridiron. Wofford clicked off 287 yards rushing, with Stevens pick- ing up 106 and Hazle 68 to spearhead the Terrier ' s running attack.
