Professor Kenneth Daniel Coates of the English Department. During his years here at Wofford he has endeared himself to many Wofford men. His friendliness, his humor, his willingness to help any student on classroom or extra-curricular activities will always be remembered. Thank you, sir, for the many things that you have done for us, those who have come before us, and also for those who follow. So it is with proud hearts that we dedicate this 1952 BOHEMIAN to you. Professor Coates, whose light of influence will guide us for years to come. ! β β . ' :Β«!β β , :;:.- Reared against the sky, JOHN B. Last Spring saw Chris Sharp elected to the presidency, Bill Thuston to the vice-presidency, Roger Bragdon to the position of secretary, and Whit An- derson stepped up as treasurer. The Winter Ball was a great success under the leadership of these men and the other members of the Student Council. The Student Council added its share to Homecoming festivities with the Homecoming Ball in November. MEMBERS CHRIS SHARP . BILL THUSTON . . ROGER BRAGDON WHIT ANDERSON . . JACK MEADORS EARLE ROCHESTER Senior Class President SENIOR CLASS Remember the day you came to Wofford, ' way back when you were a seventeen or eighteen year old frosh? You were just a group of young upstarts with half of you not knowing why you were here, but with all of you looking forward to graduation which, in most cases, would be four years hence. The class had its share of intellects and athletes. And there were the speakers, the religious workers, and the politicians. Some of the lads even showed signs of becoming possible campus wheels, while some showed signs of β well β possibility. Rush parties, fraternity dances, Winter Balls, foot- ball games, Homecoming parades, and dates were ample reward for the hours spent over the books. And even the studying wasn ' t so bad. Come to think of it, the four year stay wasn ' t bad at all! Those things are now behind you β as are the four long years. Seems only yesterday that you were at the old grind of 8:30 classes and waiting until mid- night to begin the term paper for the next morning. Only, now you ' re Seniors! Your stay beneath the Twin Towers is ended. From here you ' ll go out into a world of war and change, not knowing when or whether you ' ll gather here again. But you ' ll never forget you wereβ and areβ a WOFFORD MAN. Kinda ' hate to leave all of this, don ' t you? The following pages show the Seniors in all their resplendent glory. Also pictured individually on each page will be found a member of the graduating class selected by the Student Council as one of the most prominent members of the class, with selections based on certain outstanding characteristics. These next pages show the harvest of the seeds sown on that September day back in 1948. 40 ADAMS BALLENGER ALTMAN BEELER ANDERSON. C. BERCKMAN ANDERSON. J. Special Student 54 Yes, a lot of our hours here at Wofford were filled with ball games, fraternity dances, dates, movies, and bull sessionsβ but, there were other hoursβ serious hours . . . Remember the hours spent in afternoon labs and the hours at night trying to catch up on work lost in the afternoon . . . Remember the classes when the professors had given up hope, but you were still hanging on . . . Remember the hours of research in the library for the term paper soon due . . . Remember the midnight oil burning for you to cram a little more for exams . . . Remember that uneasy feeling when the professor would give a pop . . . These, too, were a part of your life at Wofford, for this is the true spirit of Wof ford- intellectual curiosity and fellowship mixed. Both go to make up that spirit of our Alma Mater which always will go with us wherever we go. This spirit will not let us forget that we are WOFFORD MEN . . . GOOD LUCK! GEORGE SMITH President, Junior Class J u CLASS For many of us this year marked the beginning . . . well, no, it was the end . . . come to think of it, it was both. We Juniors considered ourselves over our pro- bationary state: the days of being called Frosh were two years behind us, and we were feeling consider- ably wiser than the wise fools we had been pegged while Sophomores. Yes, there was a certain air of new born confidence about the Junior Class that really made it feel like a part of Wofford. The real Wofford spirit had seized us all . . . in fact, it had become so much a part of us that our air of confidence was shot through with a feeling of reluctance every time we contemplated becoming Seniors. How hard it is to realize that we have been here for three years! Do you remember when you, as a rat, first learned that there are twenty-five steps lead- ing to the chapel? And now in only a short time you will be ascending those same steps for the last time as a Wofford student. But the memories will not fade as quickly as the hours. The pictures on the pages that follow will re- mind us of many things: pay and summer camp for the first time during this year; and, for most of us, required courses were over and many courses, like Music Ap, were opened to us for the first time; and among our members who were frat men, we found much activity in the field of pinning that girl. In the classroom and out, there was activity galore. As the session came to a close, we realized more and more that everything we had done during this im- portant year was a contributing factor in helping us help ourselves as Wofford College sought to mold this Junior Class into the Senior Class of 1953. 56 AIKEN BARRINGEH BRYANT. With rooms in Greene and Carlisle we were a little higher up on the educational ladder. With a new sense of pride we demanded respect from the new class of rats , expected immediate action from them at our slightest request and glorified in seeing just how much we could really think up for them to do. Our class under President Jimmy Holler helped to set up the first Freshman Control Board at Wofford. Our class was the only one in history (Wofford history) to have gone tor two successive years undefeated in the annual pushball contest. The members of our class were constantly taking the lead in campus activities β social, academic, and athletic. Our class had its share of pre-medicals, pre-ministerials, pre-legals, and β of course β pre-do-nothings. And as an added distinction, our class will be the centennial graduating class in 1954. While this alone makes us a little different from previous classes, we nevertheless like to think that we are as typical as were the ninety-nine Soohomore classes before us. FIRST ROW: ABELL. Snyder Suggs Sullivan Taylor Thompson Tindall Trent Vaseliades West Whitley Wofford Wyatt JACK MEADORS President, Freshman Class F It E S H HI A I CLASS For nearly a week, peaceful calm prevailed over soon-to-be troubled waters. Comments like this won ' t be bad at all rose from the ranks of the group of high school BOYS who overnight had been transformed into college MEN. But as time went on from the first Septem- ber days, the Wofford Class of ' 55 soon found out that their new status had its hard moments as well as its happy ones. Their first inkling of this came when Joe Sophomore turned out to be not only the friendliest guy who knew his way around, but also the many-eyed monster who seemed to have more than his share of dirty, scuffed shoes. Finally, the proverbial question relating to mice and men was answered to nearly everyone ' s satisfaction. Despite the fact that a few upperclassmen still doubted, the freshman class eventually had proved its right to be classified as men. There were other obstacles β namely, in academics. Exams loomed forebodingly in the near future. Rush Week activities, although paying rich dividends to each of the fraternities, had chopped up study time. And plenty of catching up had to be done. But, with the same spirit that carried it through rat season, the class of ' 55 did catch up, winning two out of three falls with examinations. And second semester did fly by. Filling in the vacant spaces between holidays with hard work (?) on the books and in preparation for that big English 2 term paper, the scholastic year finally took a big breath and made a headlong dash for the May 31 win. There were other noteworthy events of the year β the orientation series, that ill-fated pushball game, elec- tions of class officers, one o ' clock bull sessions, and others too numerous and humorous to mention. Phi Beta Kappa was founded on December 5, 1776, at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. It was the first society to have a Greek letter name. From that small beginning in one of the cradles of the American nation and in its transplantation to another cradle of that nation, the colleges of New Eng- land, the society has spread out and covered the whole nation and become one of the most honored of the learned societies of the world. Over one hundred and fifty chapters are now in existence. The Wofford College chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, Beta of South Carolina, was chartered in January of 1941. The charter was granted to the holders of the Phi Beta Kappa key who were officially connected with Wofford College at that time. It is one of the two chapters in South Carolina. During the past decade the local chap- ter has held firmly to the high ideals and purposes for which Phi Beta Kappa was founded. MEMBERS 1951-52 Black , S. O. Bourne, W. R. Carlisle. H. B. Students are chosen on the basis of scholarship, cooperation and leadership in academic and extra-curricular activities, citizenship and service to the school, and promise of future usefulness. The eight distinguished students to receive this high honor for the 1951-52 edition are Ralph Bailey, Ed Berckman, Eugene Elam, George Fields, Earle Rochester, Chris Sharp, Bill Thuston, and Byron Wilkinson. Wofford owes its deepest appreciation to these men who have served their Alma Mater well. Mm CHRIS SHARP BILL THUSTON BYRON WILKINSON WHO ' S WHO SENIOR ORDER OF GNOMES The Senior Order of Gnomes, which was lounded on the campus in 1915, yearly gathers together four of the most influential members of the Senior Class. The selection of four rising seniors into the honorary fraternity is made prior to the close of each college year by the four senior members who constitute the Order. Students selected from the Class of ' 52 were: Ed Berckman, George Doc Fields, Chris Sharp and Byron Wilkinson. Ed is a member of the Publications Board and president of Kappa Sigma; Doc is president of the Student Christian Association; Chris is president of the student body; and Byron is president of Blue Key and Kappa Alpha. CHRIS SHARP BYRON WILKINSON BLUE KEY Blue Key, national honorary leadership fraternity, is one of the most exclusive organiza- tions on the campus, and membership in Blue Key is one of the highest honors a student may obtain while at Wofford. Members are elected by a unanimous vote of wearers of the Blue Key on the basis of scholarship, character, and individual accomplishments, and only juniors and seniors are elected. Organized in 1922, the Wofford Chapter of the International Relations Club has progressed rapidly until today it is one of the most outstanding organizations on the campus. IRC ' s steady growth can be attributed to its desire to aid students in learning to live harmoniously with the world about them. The membership, elected from students who have expressed sincere interest in international affairs, meet twice a month for informative forums and lecture ' s. This year more student participation has been shown on the programs for the club. President John Younginer and Dr. Charles Cauthen, faculty adviser, have been instrumental in promoting this interest among the members. JOHN YOUNGINER President INTERNATIONAL HALATIONS CLUB PI GAMMA MU Pi Gctmmu Mu, National Social Science Honorary Society, has always strived to stimulate interest and study in the many diversified fields of the social studies. The organization is com- posed of those men who, during the course of their college work, have shown unusual interest and achievement in the study of social sciences. Here at Wofford, South Carolina ' s Delta Chapter of Pi Gamma Mu was headed by Boyce Phillips, president, and Professor John Doby, faculty adviser. This year the club had several outstanding programs in which both student and faculty members participated. On various occasions outside speakers met with the group to dis- cuss solutions to many of the present day problems. BOYCE PHILLIPS President ' β I I DELTA PHI ALPHA Delta Phi Alpha is designed especially for the purpose of stimulating greater interest among students in the German language and culture. Many men had the dream of founding such an organization for many years, but it was Wofford ' s Dr. James A. Chiles who brought the dreams to reality. Delta Phi Alpha was founded at Wofford College on May 27, 1929, and has been one of the most active chapters since. By the end of 1929 there were three chapters of Delta Phi Alpha: Alpha at Wofford; Beta at Central in Fayette, Ma, and Gamma at Bates in Lewiston, Me. Now there are seventy-one chapters. The growth of new chapters has been slow because Delta Phi Alpha has very rigid requirements. JOHN LAMB President SIGMA DELTA P S I GERALD MOODY PHIL COVINGTON PHIL DICKENS BILL MOODY Sigma Delta Psi, National Honorary Athletic Fra- ternity, was organized at Wofford College in the Spring of 1950. Members in Sigma Delta Psi may qualify for mem- bership by successfully passing fifteen tests which are given by the department of physical education. These tests include performances in running, hurdles, jumping, climbing, football, baseball, swimming, and general athletic abilities. Wofford ' s chapter is composed of five student char- ter members and six faculty honorary members. HERBERT HUCKS LOU McCULLOUGH 4l ti; J1MMIE ROWLAND BOBBY STARNES JOEL ROBERTSON WILLIAM SCHEERER SCABBARD AND BLADE Scabbard and Blade, national honorary military soci- ety, has sought continuously to recognize outstanding student leadership in the Reserve Officers ' Training Corps. The society has as its principal aim the promo- tion of ' ESPRIT DE CORPS ' and a higher standard of military activity in the battalion. The Wofford College chapter, M Company, 6th Regiment, was chartered in 1920. Under the leadership of Charlie Burnett, the society has had another memorable year. This past year has seen the organization sponsor another gala formal, the Military Ball; numerous suppers; and two eventful initia- tion periods. CHARLIE BURNETT Captain BILL CANNON President One of the main purposes of El Circulo Espanol, the Wofford Spanish club, is to help those students who have shown an exceptional interest in the Spanish people and their customs put into practical uses many of the things which they cover in the classroom. At each monthly meeting, an outstanding program is planned which may include Spanish films, skits, and informative lectures. Several meetings are opened to the student body. On some occasions joint programs have been held with the Spanish Club of Converse College. EL CIRCULO ESPANOL FIRST ROW: Perrow. Hoover. Goldston. Womble. SECOND ROW: Bryant. Floyd. Bass, Tyler. Through the Pre-Medical Society, Wofford ' s prospective med- ical students get a chance to talk about the future life in the medical profession and to witness programs presented by prom- inent doctors and lecturers. A film on childbirth was shown with an accompanying lecture by Dr. Wardlaw Hammond; a group from the Medical School of South Carolina presented a program demonstrating latest equipment and procedures which are now being used in the medical field. Bob Holman served as president the first semester, and Gene Elam held this position during the last half of the year. GENE ELAM President PRE-MEDICAL SOCIETY The American Chemical Society was organized for students who expect to continue in some field of science after graduation. Meeting once each month, the members prepare and present their own programs. Among the programs this year were a lecture and demonstration on osmosis presented by John Lamb, and a lecture-demonstration on methods of fat determination by Eugene Stamm and Julian Pruitt. John Lamb was president of the society and Gene Elam was vice president. Dr. John Loftin and Prof. A. M. Chreitzberg were the faculty advisors. JOHN LAMB President AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY THE DEBATE TEAM Resolved: that the Federal Government should estab- lish a permanent system of wage and price controls was the national debate topic this year that made tem- pers hot and words fly fast. One senior and four juniors composing a team of four second-year men and one first-year man kept the proverbial hot potato moving at high velocity. Coached by Dean Covington and Professor Worley, known to the team as Uncle Phil and Uncle Jim, the men were well grounded in their economics. Dale Fields, Gale Fields, and Roy Easterly debated affirma- tive, while John Younginer and LeGrand Rouse debated negative. Gene Eaddy was the capable manager for the team this year. GENE EADDY Manager BLOCK 4 4 W 9 ' CLUB JACK ABELL President The Block W Club was organized to signally honor those men who have earned a letter for participation in one or more of the major sports. Membership in the club is thereby limited to those athletes who excel in certain sports, and the student who wears the block W may be justly proud. Throughout the year, several parties were given by the club, and an initiation ceremony β consisting of the Costume Parade β was an event of late Spring. This ceremony always proves popular to the Student Body and to the residents of Spartanburg. The club yearly sponsors the Gold and Black intra-squad football game at the close of Spring practice, and the Block W ' -Faculty basket- ball game. The concession stands at Andrews Field House are under supervision of Block W during the basketball session to provide the club ' s funds. MINISTERIAL UNION Offering opportunities for expression and develop- ment in the area of Christian service, the Ministerial Union unites all students who are planning to enter full-time work in the field of religion. The Ministerial Union seeks to make religion a vital force on the Wof- ford campus. Each year, during the first week of March, the Minis- terial Union joins with the Student Christian Association to make Religious Emphasis Week a meaningful expe- rience. Under the capable leadership of Jack Wilson, the organization has completed a most meaningful and successful year. Filled with periods of devotion, inspir- ational speakers, and some socials, the days just past have been indeed profitable. JACK WILSON President BAPTIST STUDENT UNION GENE ELAM - President The Baptist Student Union, under the leadership of President Gene Elam, met every Thursday morning to hear talks by area ministers and students or devotional programs by members. During the first semester, the student nurses on campus joined in their program. Each Saturday night, the B. S. U. sent a group of students to the County Tuberculosis Hospital to conduct worship programs and to show movies for the con- valescents. The Spartanburg college groups of the B. S. U. were hosts to the annual Baptist State Student Conference in the fall. The Wofford group joins the state organization in sponsoring summer missionaries to Cuba and South America. THE STUDENT Cabinet Members The Student Christian Association serves as the spir- itual nerve center of our campus. As well as being a channel through which those individuals and groups interested in service projects may serve, it is the focal point for all religious activities. The Cabinet enjoyed a planning retreat at George Smith ' s cabin one weekend. Here they planned pro- grams for the regular meetings of SCA throughout the year. The programs this year were lively, interesting, and extremely helpful to the students attending the Thursday meetings. Brotherhood Center was the major project for the SCA this year. The project gives underprivileged Negro children an opportunity to work and play under student supervision. Another project was the painting of the fence behind the athletic field as part of a campus beautification program. A unique feature added this year was the Bull Ses- sions which followed immediately after the regular Thursday night meetings. And again this year the sixty-odd voice group presented its well- rounded program to thousands of South Carolinians. The club, under the capable and inspiring direction of Professor Sam Moyer, has become an integral part of the extra-curricular activities of the school, and has proved itself a most satisfactory means of presenting Wofford to the state. As in past years, the annual tour consisted of some ten major Carolina cities, along with various one-night stands in nearby towns. The quartet and the octet made quite a name for them- selves this year as they appeared before numerous groups, civic clubs, and in churches. Manager Henry Kelley and President Cal Myers Moyer ' s Music Makers WOFFOR D BAND j The Wofford College Band is the backbone of the school ' s cheering section. This body of musicians is present at all major athletic functions played at home, adding color and spirit to the contests via music. In addition to performing at football and basketball games, the band is on hand for pep rallies. This year they were called upon to participate in several civic activities. An integral part of the school ' s extra-curricular activi- ties, the band is composed of students proficient in the use of musical instruments, and members are granted scholarships for participation. PROFESSOR SAM MOYER Director MRS. ELIZABETH LAWRENCE President Officers of the club The wives of the Wofford married students de- cided that it was not altogether a man ' s campus, so they organized the Wofford Dames β just for the ladies. Each year the club sponsors a special project to obtain money for the special loan fund which the club has established for any married student. This year the club presented a womanless wed- ding as the special project. The wedding offered many laughs to the audience as Wofford ' s gorge- ous male beauties helped to tie the knot for Rock Huff and Daddy Neal. Mrs. Elizabeth Lawrence acted as president for this school term. WOFFORD DAMES The Publications Board is the governing body of the three main publications here at Woffordβ THE BOHEMIAN, THE JOURNAL, and the OLD GOLD AND BLACK. The regulation of the financial requirements and the election of the editors and the associate editors of each publication are just some of the many duties which the members of this board have to perform. As required by the constitution, the board is composed of four faculty members and five student members. The student members are elected to their position by the student body. Professor J. L. Salmon was chairman of the board, Ed Berck- man was vice-chairman, and Professor L. P. Jones was sec- retary. The board was divided into four committees, namely, the BOHEMIAN committee, THE JOURNAL committee, the OLD GOLD AND BLACK committee, and the Ways and Means com- mittee. PROFESSOR L. P. Departmental heads Sid Fulmer, Ralph Bailey, Tommy Jones, and Bill Duke have written penetrating analyses of happenings in the fields of movies, books, music, and drama. Contributors Harry Gall, Ronald Bryant, and Ed Berckman have supplied interesting and highly readable material. Interesting and varied covers were prepared by Tommy Jones. THE JO URNAL made many changes in style this year to make it one of Wofford ' s best literary magazine years. He was the first South Carolina small college player to be asked to a post-season All-Star game, having starred in last December ' s Blue-Gray game in Montgomery, Alabama. A It II 1J IV El THE CLOCK The 1952 Terrier gridders faced probably the toughest array of opponents ever seen on a Wofford schedule and came through with an enviable record of six wins, three defeats and a tie with Stetson in the final Homecoming Game. Every school that beat Wofford was a large university. Coach Phil Dickens ' boys hit the heights in that muddy win over Furman, the first in over three decades. They showed the ability to come back from behind in the victories over P. C. and Tampa. Bud Neely kicked both points and the score remained 14-13 through the third quarter. Then Eli Sanders got loose for 75 yards. Burnie Miller leaped over two plays later. An alert defense kept PC in their own territory and Starnes and McLellan added six-pointers before the game ended. BILL POPE TONY ORGERA RODDY POWERS β β β Β : TERRIERS TAKE NEWRERRY ... Zl - 0 Wofford wrapped up its fourth straight Little Four title by coasting to a 21-0 win over Newberry. After scoring three times in the first half, the Terriers set- tled down to a defensive game and held the Indians to a net total of 1 1 yards rushing. McLellan capped the first drive, covering 69 yards, with a 2-yard plunge. Starnes went 20 for the next one, and Barbare grabbed a 20-yard aerial from Beeler for the final marker. Seventy-five hundred tense and rain-soaked fans watched Wofford chalk up two quick touchdowns in the first period and then doggedly hold its advantage the rest of the way on a muddy gridiron. It was the running of Beeler and the two points after touchdowns by the talented toe of Barbare that finally spelled victory for the Terriers. N - 0 The Terriers traveled to the land of sunshine again and wilted before the powerful attack of FSU ' s hefty Seminoles. It was the first time in 16 games that the Dickensmen had failed to score. The Seminoles tallied once in the second and once in the third quarters and held the Terriers at bay through most of the game. Tailback Jody Ellis sparked Wofford ' s only long drive, which sputtered out on the FSU 14. Beeler completed seven passes but his receivers let him down. Jack Abell turned in a sparkling game at offensive end, and Bill Thuston stood out on defense. PC ' uns pile up on Eli Bitter cold and Homecoming may have helped the Terriers in their final game as they held favored Stetson to a 7-7 tie. After a scoreless, but exciting, first half, Charlie Bryant scooted 50 yards off tackle for the first tally of the game. Barbare converted. But the lead was shortlived. The Hatters finally made one of their threats count. Bill Johnson went the final 3 of a 75-yard drive on a quarterback sneak and Martin kicked the point. Stetson ' s second field goal attempt in the final minute went wide and Wofford fans con- tentedly settled for a tie. The draw went along with six wins and three losses for a successful Terrier grid season against some mighty tough opposition. BASKETBALL Nineteen fifty-two marked one of Wofford ' s most suc- cessful basketball seasons in recent years. Sparked by towering All-State Center Ellerbe Daddy Neal, the Terriers rolled to 16 victories in 24 games. Highlights of the season were the two exciting vic- tories over the Presbyterian cagers. The Terriers were Little Four and Little Five champs, although PC ' s Blue Hose took the Little Four tournament final from a tired Wofford crew. Moody, Abell, Womble, and Bryant made up the rest of the first five with record-breaking Neal. Sincerely, RALPH BAILEY, Editor 206 A L MA MATER On the city ' s northern border, Reared against the sky, Proudly stands our Alma Mater, As the years go by. Chorus May it ever be our watchword, Conquer and Prevail. Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, Dear old Wofford, Hail! Cherished by thy sons forever, Memories sweet will throng Round our hearts, dear Alma Mater, As we sing thy song. When we from thy halls have parted, And life ' s battle ' s on, Thy great spirit shall inspire us Till eternal dawn.
