The Main Building is the only one on the campus into which every student has entered. Through the years it has changed its appearance. At first the Main Building was a plain brick building with steps of wood across the entire porch. Somewhere close to 1880 it was plastered on the front and the stone steps put up as they are now. More than any others, this building is loved and revered by every alumnus. A mental picture of it is always with them; wherever they are, when their thoughts turn to the Campus, this is the picture they see. For almost a century through its doors have come boys seeking knowledge as a preparation for serviceable living and out through the same doors they have gone to play their part in Life. Here they have caught something of the standard and ideals and traditions of the College and have gone forth under the self- imposed pledge to honor and perpetuate them. In the future, whatever changes are needed in the interior to make it more serviceable will be made, but its simple, classic, majestic exterior will remain as it is today. — Arthur Mason DuPre. ' Si monumentum requiris circumspice.

DR. WALTER KIRKLAND GREENE Phi Beta Kappa A.B., Wofford College, 1903; M.A. Vanderbilt University, 1905; A.M., Har- vard University, 1921; Ph.D., Harvard University, 1923; LL.D., Mount Union College, 1943. Dr. Walter Kirkland Greene came to Wofford as President in 1942, succeeding Dr. Henry Nelson Snyder, who for forty years was president. Dr. Greene, himself a Wofford alumnus, in his brief tenure of office has demonstrated a keen insight into the needs of our institution, and already he has set in motion the machinery of the Wofford of Tomorrow Program, which will make the dreams of a bigger and better Wofford o reality. His personality is a unique combination of scholarship, leadership, and Christian stewardship. Scholarship is reflected in his knowledge and understanding; his initiative and foresight sponsor the quality of leadership; his faith, humility, and deep religious spirituality are inspiring virtues of Christian stewardship.
