SNYDER President Emeritus DOCTOR A. MASON DUPRE Dean Emeritus Like the loftv trees that adorn the camous, our seven retired professors are forever a part of Wof- ford College. Even as it takes years to grow a giant tree, it requires time and experience for the body to show forth the impact of the soul. These revered and esteemed gentlemen have indeed grown in grace and in the wisdom and knowledge of our Lord. To them, with our grateful tribute, we dedi- cate this book. There is no way to measure the profound influ- ence of the lives of our professors emeritus on the men of Wofford College β€” yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Their mark has been made, and Time will exalt their worthy achievements to a new great- ness. DOCTOR JAMES A. CHILES German DOCTOR WILLIAM L. PUGH English PROFESSOR ARCADIUS M. TRAWICK Religion There is no bourn, no uitimate. The very farthest star But rims a sea of other stars extending just as far. There ' s no beginning and no end. As in the ages gone, The greatest joy of joys shall be β€” the joy of going on. DOCTOR DAVID D. WALLACE History DOCTOR COLEMAN B. WALLER Chemistry The Main Building is the only one on the campus into which every student has entered. Through the years it has changed its appearance. At first the Main Building was a plain brick building with steps of wood across the entire porch. Somewhere close to 1880 it was plastered on the front and the stone steps put up as they are now. More than any others, this building is loved and revered by every alumnus. A mental picture of it is always with them; wherever they are, when their thoughts turn to the Campus, this is the picture they see. For almost a century through its doors have come boys seeking knowledge as a preparation for serviceable living and out through the same doors they have gone to play their part in Life. Here they have caught something of the standard and ideals and traditions of the College and have gone forth under the self- imposed pledge to honor and perpetuate them. In the future, whatever changes are needed in the interior to make it more serviceable will be made, but its simple, classic, majestic exterior will remain as it is today. β€” Arthur Mason DuPre. ' Si monumentum requiris circumspice. DR. WALTER KIRKLAND GREENE Phi Beta Kappa A.B., Wofford College, 1903; M.A. Vanderbilt University, 1905; A.M., Har- vard University, 1921; Ph.D., Harvard University, 1923; LL.D., Mount Union College, 1943. Dr. Walter Kirkland Greene came to Wofford as President in 1942, succeeding Dr. Henry Nelson Snyder, who for forty years was president. Dr. Greene, himself a Wofford alumnus, in his brief tenure of office has demonstrated a keen insight into the needs of our institution, and already he has set in motion the machinery of the Wofford of Tomorrow Program, which will make the dreams of a bigger and better Wofford o reality. His personality is a unique combination of scholarship, leadership, and Christian stewardship. Scholarship is reflected in his knowledge and understanding; his initiative and foresight sponsor the quality of leadership; his faith, humility, and deep religious spirituality are inspiring virtues of Christian stewardship. The purpose of WHO ' S WHO is to serve as an incentive for students to get the most out of their college careers ' as a means of compensation to students for what they have already done; as a recommendation to the business world; and as a standard of measurement for students comparable to such agencies as Phi Beta Kappa and the Rhodes Scholarship Award. It is the only means of national recognition devoid of politics, fees, and dues. The students are chosen on the basis of character, scholarship, leadership, extra-curricular activities, and possibility of future usefulness to business and society. PUBLICATIONS BOARD of making many books there is no end. The Publications Board was formed in 1935- 1936 to control the finances of the student publications. The board audits the books of the three publications, and sets limits to the individual charges levied. Under the control of the board the quality of the publications has steadily increased, and the assessment to each student has been lessened. The board was originally composed of four faculty members and four student members, with a faculty member serving as chairman. This has been changed to include four faculty and five students in order that the students may have the controlling vote. First row, leit to right: Salmon, Cooksey, Bourne. Jones. . . . The motto of the club, For (My) Country Through World Peace, suggests something of the purpose of the organization. The Wofford I. R. C. was organized in 1922. Meetings are held every other week, and the members discuss topics of national and international interest. Each spring the chapter sends delegates to the Southeast International Relations Club Conference. Maintenance of a high scholastic average is one requirement for membership. The society conducts meetings twice monthly β€” one meeting consisting of an ad- dress by some outstanding personality in the field of law or politics. The society is named in honor of James F. Byrnes, prom- inent lawyer, Congressman, jurist, Cabinet member, and advisor to presidents, because of his splendid work in promot- ing world peace and understanding, and the honor and credit which he has brought to the legal profession. Mr. Byrnes is the only life member of the society. Membership in the society is limited to pre-law students of the upper three classes who are in good standing with the society and the college. This year it was decided to have all veterans eligible for membership; how- ever, it was necessary that they express their desire to join. Kappa Sigma ' s first American chapter was organized at the Uni- versity of Virginia on December 10, 1869. Wofford ' s chap- ter was founded in 1894. Today, Kappa Sigma is firmly established in 110 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Kappa Sigma owns houses valued at over $3,000,000 and has an endowment fund of nearly half a million dollars, which is used as loons for Kappa Sigma students who need help in order to complete their education. This is by far the largest student loan fund of any fraternity. Kappa Sigma is represented on the Wofford faculty by Professor Raymond A. Patterson and Professor Hugh T. Shockley. INSPECTION FOOTBALL Football, traditionally a trail-blazer in the world of collegiate sports, is once more leading the way. This time football is leading Wofford to new heights in the field. It is introducing a new era for all sports at Wofford, an era in which renewed and vigorous support will be given to the athletic program, and an era in which Wofford ' s teams will bring home new honor and glory. A new feeling has invaded the campus, it is present in the classroom, in the dormitories, and most important, it is present on the playing fields. The new feeling is a product and a characteristic of this new era. Other character- istics are the abundance of good athletes on the campus, the statewide and national recognition which sor e have received, the very capable coaching staff, and the records which Wofford teams compiled during 1947- ' 48. After a disastrous season just a year ago, the Terrible Terriers of the gridiron bounced right back to win six of eleven games and begin the New Era with a bang. COACHES HEAD COACH PHIL DICKENS Coming to Wofford just a year ago, Coach Phil Dickens has built a strong and worthy team out of little material, and has laid long-range plans for the Athletic Department. He has made friends of the entire student body, and has well demon- strated his coaching ability. A former University of Tennessee grid star, he was assistant coach at Wofford from 1 939 to 1941. Since that time h i has coached at Tennessee, North Carolina State, Georgia Pre- flight, and Mississippi State. Dickens advocates the Tennessee System, a modified single wingback, and effectively installed it at Wofford this year. Wofford is fortunate to have such an expert heading its athletic staff. Wilbur 0. Stephens is the assistant coach. Line Coach Jomes Myers was also a star at the University of Tennessee during his college days. End Coach Joe Robertson is a Wofford alumnus who starred at center for the Terriers throughout 1 940-4 1 . Watching over. MYERS ROBERTSON STEPHENS PLAYERS LITTLE ALL-AMERICAN Co-Captain of the 1947 edition of the Terrier footballers, Ken DuBard received nation-wide recognition this year with his selection to the first-string Little All-American team. This means that DuBard is generally recognized as one of the two best tackles in the nation who play for small schools. DuBard was also easily named the best tackle in South Carolina and held that position on the All-South Carolina eleven. Playing his fourth and final year for the Terriers, DuBard consistently proved his ability as an anchor on defense, and a blocker and hole-opener on offense. He is the second Wofford athlete to be named to the Little All-American team, the first being Aubrey Faust, an end, beside whom DuBard played before the war. DuBARD Slingin ' Sammy Sewell was named to the second-team All-South Carolina team this year as a result of his brilliant offensive ability. Sewell had a part in almost all scores made by the Wofford team this year, scoring several touchdowns and passing for many others. Individually, he scored as many points as any other man in the State. James Bee Bee Clary, a rugged guard, played sterling ball throughout the year and was named the most valuable. Clary was named one of the two best linemen in South Caro- lina and was placed on the third team, All-State. Clary, DuBard and Sewell with trophies presented to them by the Alumni Association. WOFFORD 19 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY 0 Hitting their offensive stride, the Terriers scored thrice in the last half on a 70-yard end-run by Sewell, Cheatham ' s 55- yard punt return, and a 60-yard runback of a pass interception by Quick. Quick also kicked the extra point. WOFFORD 45 fORJ JACKSON 0 Completely outclassing the Red Raiders, Wofford scored almost at will. Seweil and Mabry scored twice each, and Hilton, Harrison and P. Clark once each. WOFFORD 7 DAVIDSON 12 Jumping to a 7-point lead in the opening moments of the game, the Terriers threw a scare into the heavily favored Wild- cat team. Cheatham scored on a 70-yard dash and the Terriers were never far behind after that. The game ended with Wofford well into Davidson territory. WOFFORD 6 GUILFORD 0 In a hard-fought battle with the power-laden Quakers, neither team scored until late in the final quarter when Sewell passed to Fleming for the only tally. 146 KELLY MITCHELL TONY ORGERA WOFFORD 6 FURMAN 20 One of the most thrilling games ever to be played on Snyder Field saw Sewell go 69 yards through the whole Furman team for a touchdown on the second Wofford play from scrimmage. The score was unchanged until the final quarter when Furman capitalized on a blocked kick, a long pass and a fumble to spoil Homecoming Day for the pro-Wofford spectators. WOFFORD 6 NEWBERRY 13 Newberry ' s pass attack proved too strong for the in|ury-ridden Terrier squad, as the Indians scored twice in the second quar- ter. Wofford ' s tally came in the last quarter when Sewell went over from the six-yard line. WOFFORD 7 PRESBYTERIAN 12 Again the Dickensmen were defeated by a strong passing attack while they were unable to get their offensive going. The game was played in the mud, the last half in a deluge of rain. Mabry and Sewell starred, Sewell going 43 yards for the marker in the second quarter. WOFFORD 7 HIGH POINT 0 Hitting the win column once more, the balanced attack of the Methodists was too much for the North Carolinians. Sewell scored, but Rowell was the offensive star as he consistently ripped through the lin e for good gains. Culbreth played fine defensive ball. DEL WILES GLENN MILLER HILTON CULBRETH WADE CORN ALLEN CLARK SAM NICHOLSON GUS GILBERT BOB HUNT 147 WOFFORD 13 RANDOLPH-MACON 7 In a hard-fought battle, the Terriers outclassed the R-M Yellow Jackets and won the ganne. This game saw two future little Ail-American stars, Oley of R-M, and DuBard of Wofford, face one another and fight it out. Wofford touchdowns were made by Seay, who took a short pass from Sewell, and Wiles, who went through the line. WOFFORD 26 ERSKINE 20 By far the most thrilling game of the year was played on Thanksgiving Day at Anderson. Seay took the opening kick-off on the 30-yard line end wormed his way to the 45 where he was stopped, but lateroled to Sewell who sped over the remain- ing 55 yards for the score. Sewell tallied again shortly after this, and passed to Gordon for another. But Erskine was not to be easily defeated and come back to take the lead, 20 to 19, in the last quarter. Clary smashed into an Erskine man causing him to fumble and Wofford recovered. On the next play Sewell passed again, this time to Hunt, who stepped across the double stripes. Sewell was the individual star of the day. but Seay was a demon on defense, stopping Erskine ball-carriers with shoe- string tackles. DuBard was also an anchor in the line as he played his last game for the Terriers. β– β– Si PHIL CLARK GENE HUFF LUTHER GLENN NEAL McNeill II BILL THOMAS 148 JOHNNY HILTON CHARLEY WEBB BILL VARNER WALLY DEAN Lett to Right, sitting: Cheatham, N. The Terrible Terriers of the hardwoods really hit their stride during the 1947-48 season, leading the state with a record of 18 wins and only six losses. The Terrier quintet won the district S. I. A. A. cham- pionship of the mythical Little Five. Coach Joe Robertson was blessed at the first of the season by having almost all of the previous year ' s team return. Also much freshman talent appeared, the best of which was Fred Skinny Powers. Also, freshmen Carol Beavers, Mack Patton, Lex Riddle and C. E. Morgan showed promise. Seniors Charlie Seay and Harry Ears Mahaffey played their last season for the Old Gold and Black of Wofford. Both turned in sterling performances during the season, lending steadiness and balance to the Terrier floor game. Seay received wide honors during the season and is generally recognized as the best all-round basketeer in the state. In spite of an ankle injury and several bad colds, he was again one of the leading scorers in the state. COTHRAN AND SEAY GO AFTER A REBOUND. Returning letterman and Captain Joe Whitener heeds the distance runners, with Wilson Carmichael also run- ning in that category. Whitener specializes in the one- mile run and Carmichael in the two-mile. There are many men out for the positions in the short races such as the 100-yard dash, the 440-yard run and the 880-yard race. Among the better of these contestants are Lou McCullough, Junior Harrison, David Carmichael, Willis Woodham and Oscar Schoenfelt. The pole-vaulting will be ably handled by veteran Wally Dean of last year ' s squad and newcomer Phil Walpole. Dean showed much ability last year, Schoenfelt will also be out to hold down a spot in the broad-jump, one of the positions which he filled last year. A good man for the hurdles, both the low and high, is experienced James Ballew who also filled in that spot year. Willie Varner is a dependable anchor man in the field events, active in the discus throw, the javelin throw the shot put. Varner is also a hold-over from last year ' s squad. Early- season prospects are for a well-balanced team built around this nucleus. Scheduled opposition for the team includes four new opponents, Virginia Polytechnic, The Citadel, Stetson, and Georgia ' s Savannah Division. Among the most promising players are the following; Chester Stephens, versatile catcher, pitcher, shortstop, second baseman and outfielder. Stephens led the ' 47 team in batting. Howard Harvey, steady and dependable pitcher. Harvey had a good record during ' 47 also. Also hard-hitting Third-Baseman O ' Neil Casey and First- Socker, Arthur Lefty Taylor. HARVEY GOLF SOUTH CAROLINA INTER-COLLEGIATE CHAMPION, 1947. The gentleman ' s game of golf gained greatly in popularity at Wofford in 1948 after the 1947 team met with a good measure of success and the golf-bug bit more students. Low scores and friendly rivalry characterized the keen competition among aspirants as each sought to make a berth on the team. The lowest-shooting golfer at Wofford is P. J. Boatwright who has made a name for himself in golfing circles. Among other accomplishments, Boatwright has annexed the title of South Carolina Inter-Collegiate Champion. With Letter- men Frank Wood, Bill Vaughn, Jack Cannon and Bill Boyd returning, the team expects at least to retain last year ' s berth as the second-place team in South Carolina. Bolstering these hopes are newcomers Lou McCullough and Orin Judy. In the doubles, Wood and Vaughn are back to pain the opposition for another year. These two were never defeated in doubles competition when playing together last year. Scheduled for this year is a trip through Georgia and Florida. Matches have been scheduled with Clemson, The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, High Point, Kalamazoo, Mercer, Newberry, Presbyterian, and the College of Charleston. JUDY JUDY AND McCullough. It will be pre- sented at the end of each year to the organization which has acquired the most points under the intra- mural program for that year. Permanent possession will go to the organization that wins it for the most times over a ten-year period. - Block W Club President Ken DuBard presents the trophy to Dr. Greene who accepts it in behalf of the College. MURALS WARMING UP Objectives of the Intramural Department An objective of the Intramural Department is to acquire space and develop fields so that every student at Wofford can have the opportunity to compete in some form of active sport. The department is more interested in the men par- ticipating than in the outcome of the contest. The goal of the department is to teach sportsmanship, fair play and respect for the will of others. Through practice a man develops a fondness for sports which, in turn, give him courage and provide him with fitness of body. It creates in him a sports-habit which carries over and serves in later life as a wholesome recreation. The student who takes full advantage of the opportunities provided in this program will have not only a decided health benefit, but will have vital improvement in his mental well-being. Participation is entirely voluntary. Student leadership is encouraged in the administration of play with faculty guidance rather than faculty dominance being the rule. This is a good proving-ground for democracy: Sports for all and playing instead of watching. Le J aii (Committees SNYDER HALL COMMITTEE, Clarence Eariey, Chairman. Left to Right: James Johnson, Edward Mixon, Clarence Eariey, Bernard Fifzgerald. SNYDER HALL The hall committees are probably the best example of real student government on the campus. From a select group of candidates, each dormitory chooses a governing committee, which then selects its own chairman. All dormitory prob- lems are in the hands of this committee, which controls its hall and is the representative body of the hall to lay any complaint before the college administration. If the committee decides that some individual ,s too ill-behaved to live in the hall, it may at any time request him to move elsewhere. Such drastic action is rarely needed. By wise counselling, the committee members attempt always to make the offender see that he can fit reasonably into the life of the community. The maturity and sense of responsibility of the Wofford committees have helped greatly to make possible a senior-college way of life in the dormitories. We can have an America in which none is hungry, or ill housed, or insufficiently clothed, or idle, or desperate with fear for his future and that of his children. We con have peace with other nations if we discard the advice of the otherwise and the cynical. The world is one world, not because the old relationships between time and distance have been altered by the triumph of man over the air, but because men are the same everywhere. Peace depends upon the relationship between men, not upon the dimensions of the physical world that they inhabit. v We can have freedom, if we moke the freedom of other men our concern, because nowhere in all the world cCin some men be free, until everywhere all men are free.
