( )nr colleg-e days will soon be gone and we will axj to join in that group of men called the Alumni of Wofford . It is our hoije that this book, in ears to come, will afford some joy to you by recalling to you old acquaintances and experiences. And if, by chance, you gain some in- spiration from these pages, our work shall not have been in vain. This is your Annual, and it is only through your cooiseration that the 1938 Bohemian has finally round- ed into shape. We hoi e that you like it. To Dr. Joseph Augustus Gamewell, in recognition of the great service that he has rendered to WofTord College, we dedicate this nineteen hundred thirty-eight Bohemian. During the sixty-three years that uncle Gus has been a professor at this institution students have learned to know and love and esteem him. His pure and noble life has been an inspiration to many ; and the spirit of his splendid personality will always be a part of Wofford. So it is with the greatest re- spect that we dedicate this book to him. CONTENTS COLLEGE . . . • Book One CLASSES . . . . Book Two ATHLETICS . . . Book Three ACTIVITIES . . . SENIOR CLASS POEM By W. D. Livingston, Class Poet To days that now have gone we turn our thoughts. How strange it seems to us that they are past : For they have gone and will not come again Exce pt in reveries. How sad it is Yet even sweet to have those memories Of colle.ge days: we hold them still and shall Until the parting life shall bid us on. And as we leave, her towers shine and tell To us in noble, whispering tones, Oh ! Men, The fight is on. The fight is on, ye dare Not turn and flee for fear as cowards do ; Ye must be brave, ye must be strong, and work And strive ye must. This is your task : to spread Some joy, to ease some pain, to love all men; And men shall know and praise you for your deeds. And life goes on and death draws ni.gh and still She shines ; the aged man shall see her light And love her still and smile to think of her. He longs to sing her praise with parting breath ; She soothes and whispers softly in his ear. ' Tis sweet to live but sweeter still to die. SUN AasisfcDit Vlu ' cr Leader THE 1937 FOOTBALL SEASON RESUME Thino-s looked faiii ' rosy at the beo-inning of the season. Vet- erans Jones. Gladden, Banner, Wofford, Ballenger. Johnson Avo-erinos, Tavlor, Moore, Ashmore, Carr, and Captani Jim Ariail reported for practice early and in excellent physical condition. They were reinforced bv Carr, Hilton, Moore, Robertson, Rouquie, Steadman, and Workman, who formed the nncleus of the previous year ' s powerful freshman team. Still more reinforcements— five Junior College men answered the call also. Thev were Goode, Greene, Mangum, Vaughan, and Dick Bell. After weeks of strenuous i ractice, during which the morale_ ot the team was higher than in a good manv vears, the Terriers squared off against the new streamlined Citadel Bulldogs, built around the powerful Andv Sabados and a nimble footed back- tield ace. Kooksie Robinson. Our rejuvenated eleven lacked the pep speed, and vumph of the Cadets, who rolled over the listless Terriers. 38-0. Diminutive John Danner was outstanding, proving to be the best football player on the field for his size. Bill Jones, voted most valuable for the 1936 season, broke his left leg and as a result was out the rest of the season The golden clad warriors iourneved to Lexington, a., to meet the Washington and Lee Generals. Two ends, both over six feet five inches tall, stayed in the Wofford backfield all afternoon catch- ino- passes while our ponv backfield tried in vam to bat them down. And for the third time, thev turned us back, three touchdowns Taylor. Tackle Johnson, Tackle Vaughan, Back Greene, Back RouNTREE, Guard Goode, Back AvGERiNOS, Guard THE 1937 FOOTBALL SEASON RESUME to none, 19-0. Wofford ' s line plaved insi ired football, forcing the W. L. ' s to score all their touchdowns via the aerial route. Furman ' s Purple Hurricane served notice that they had another powerful team by running roughshod over our greatly outweighed team. June Scott and company plowed ruthlessly over the Ter- riers ' defense, which was greatly weakened by John Banner ' s in- jurv, forcing him from the game in the first quarter. From then on, Tonv Avgerinos kept slicing into the House of Magic ' s back- field to throw them for many losses. The spirit of victory ran rampant on the campus preceding the Oglethorpe game — at last we were about to meet a team of our own size. The Petrels offered the most unusual shift seen on Snyder field for some time. It was a combination of the Big Apple and hoy) scotch. Evidently it did not overawe the Terriers who showed plenty of drive and fight as the two evenlv matched teams see-sawed up and down the field. Oglethorpe scored the only touchdown and later kicked the extra point. Oh ! Whew ! That Erskine game ! Slated to take a pasting from the Flying Fleet, a battling Wofford crew invaded Due West, scored the first touchdown and settled down to hold the precious seven point lead. The Fleet pushed over six points later but failed to make the extra point. With their backs to the wall the Wofifords battled for a seeming eternity to hold their slender lead. With a minute to play, the Fleet was given the ball and first down on our four yard line on pass interference. Three plays netted them a one yard loss, but on the fourth down they crossed into the land of milk and honey. Result: Erskine (I ittle Four Cham- pions) 13 — WoiTord 7. RouQuiE, Cenier ...... Gladden, Back Workman, Guard W. Moore, Center Ariail, Tackle R. Moore, Guard Bell, End THE 1937 FOOTBALL SEASON RESUME Mangum, Back Danner, Back Davis, Back T. Carr, Guard A snake-hipped fullback, Hilton, led Coach Carson ' s badly bat- tered eleven to- a 13-6 victory (our first) over the tribe of Indians from Newberry College. We scrai ped. We foug ' ht. We blocked. We plaved g-ood football. We won! Hilton nimbly stepped sev- enty yards for another marker, but it was nullified by a clipping- penalty. With an Indian scalp on their belts, the Old Gold and Blacks headed for Florida and Rollins. The nig-htmare was dominated bv a hard char.oing- Rollins team, clammv weather, and a heavy fog. After sixty minutes the Terrier attack had rolled up no points to Rollins ' thirtv-seven. More arsenic ! (That ' s one form of suicide. Another is to play a football team that outweighs you nearly thirty pounds to the man!) After sloshing around in the North Carolina mud for four C|uarters, the tired Terriers came home with the little end of a 26-0 score. It ' s a pleasure writing about the final game. Our traditional little school rival, Presbyterian College, clashed with a smooth working, greatly improved WotTord Team. Snake-Hips ' ' Hil- ton took P. C. ' s first punt on his own 32-yard line and streaked ui: the sidelines for sixty-eight yards and the first Terrier touch- down. On the next Woft ' ord running plav after the kick-ofl:, TTilton faded back and tossed a lnillet-i)ass into the hands of Dick Bell who scampered untouched across for another marker. Later, in the third quarter, Hilton broke through his own left tackle and galloped on down to the i.)romised land for touchdown number Hilton, Back Ballenger, End Steadman, Tackle THE 1937 FOOTBALL SEASON RESUME three. These three plavs were the entire offensive attack of the Woffords all afternoon as thev chalked up only one first down — and that was on a fifteen-vard penalty. The entire line did yeo-man ' s service, droppinfi Blue Hosemen for numerous losses, and scarcely vi elding- any ground. The whole group of Wofiford players played hard and clean football all season, often in tlie face of tremendous odds, and they and Mr. Carson should receive nothin.s: but praise for the excellent showing- thev made in their own class. Of course we didn ' t beat any of the big teams ; but. our resources were limited. We ' re not predicting any bright things for the wearers of the Old Gold and Black next year. But, if f)ld I_.ady Luck doesn ' t cripple a batch of our men as she did this vear, there will be a much greater percentage of victories chalked ui in the win column at the close of next season. Bill Gladden, who played nearly every minute of every game this year, proved to be the most improved man on the team. And, when awarding time came, Most Valuable Player was pinned on his capable chest. Captain Jim and the seniors will be sorely missed next vear, but there ' s a scrapi ing bunch of Pups eager for a chance to fill their cleated shoes. So, farewell, Jim. Joe, Bill, Tonv, Dick, and Rufe ; you ' ve done your share. Come on Ed, Joel, Bennett, Maness, Yongue, and Chink ' Let ' s win ! — D.WE Garvin, Sports Editor. After a mediocre start, Coach Rob- ertson ' s cage crew rapidly developed into one of the three top ranking teams in the state chami ionship race. Faced bv All-State Forward Denny Hendrix, the Old Gold and Black courtmen swept aside all state oi)position and at the three-quarter mark were on the top. However, this reign was short lived, the Terriers being nosed out bv Erskine ' s Flving Fleet by a one point margin. Two days later the Citadel Bull- dogs (previous victims of the Terriers) went on a scoring spree in the last few minutes of the game to tlu-ow another monkey wrench into our asijirations for a state championshi]). Never down : they came back strong, subduing Furman, Newlierry, and P. C. in easy fashion ; but Banks McFadden and liis Clemson Tigers downed the Woffordonians in the last game of the season leaving the Terriers in sole possession of third place in the State. The 1938 edition (if tlie Terriers lacked height, the tallest man hardlv passing the six-foot mark. This disadvantage was offset by a dazzling passing attack along with tenacious guarding. Two jimior college men, Denny Hendrix and Walt Trammel, crashed the starting ' lineuii and i roved to be the spark plugs of the Terrier machine. Southpaw Ed Clark, soi homore, served notice also that he was going to i la - plenty of basketball before he leaves Terriertown. But Hodges was i laced on the All-State second team by virtue of his all around floor work and leadership. He will be lost by graduation next year along with dependable Archie Pearson, Raymond Lark, and Leonard Hill. Though we lose several good men bv the dijiloma route, it is hoped that their shoes will be an:i ly filled b ' rising sophomores : Pep Coan, J(_)hn Shuler, Milt Maness, Ralph Flynn, and Poe Rickman. This fraternity took the place of the Delta Chi Alpha chapter on the WoiTord campus. It is the largest honorary fraternity and probably the most active organization at Wofford College. The fraternity is directed by its Honorary President, the President, who is elected for one year, and members of the President ' s cabinet. The cabinet consists of the Directors of the Departments, who serve in that caiiacity not more than two terms. There are four ongmal Departments: Inter-Collegiate Deputation, Pulilicity, Radio, and Worship. All are self- explanatory, perhaps, with the exception of the latter. Through the Worship Department stu- dents arc sent to suriply pulpits, teach in Sunday Schools, or conduct other similar services. Students are appointed to the Departments by the caljinet each term. These appointments are read by the President at the General Meeting of the term. The entire chapter meets only once a month and at the General Meeting at which time reports are received. Membership in this fraternity is determined by the cabinet and is •interdenominational. Every person who accepts the invitation remanis On Trial for at least one term before he is ordained Active. The Administration has cooperated with the Sigma Tau Alpha Radio Department in the radio broadcasts every Tuesday afternoon at 4:43 over station WBT in Charlotte and over station WIS in Columbia every Thursday at the same time.
