DR. JAMES HAMPTON KIRKLAND, ' 77 Dr. James H. Kirkland was born in Spartanburg, S. C, on September 9, 1869. He received his A.B. degree from Wofford College in 1877 and his M.A. in 1878. He secured his Ph.D. degree at the University of Leipzig in 1885. The University of North Carolina, the University of Missouri, Wesleyan University, the University of Pitts- burgh, and Baylor University have awarded him honorary LL.D. degrees. The University of the South awarded him a D.C.L. degree in 1902. Dr. Kirkland was Professor of Greek and German at Wofford College from 1881 to 1883. From 1883 to 1886 he traveled and studied abroad. Upon his return, he became Professor of Latin at Vanderbilt University. He held this position until 1893, at which time he became Chancellor of the University. He has been Chancellor since that time. Dr. Kirkland is one of the foremost educators of the South, a leader in educational advancement and develop- ment. He was the founder of the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in the Southern States in 1895. He was Chairman of the National Conference Committee on Standards of Colleges and Secondary Schools during 1920-23. Dr. Kirkland is also a Trustee of the Carnegie Foundation, being Chairman of the Board in 1922-23.
