Seventy-six Senior Class History In the fall of the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and thirty-two, ap- proximately one hundred and fifty neophytes, coming from all sections of the eastern part of the United States, enrolled as freshmen and we began our four year career on the Wofford campus. This was a new venture for us and we did not realize the significance of the situation. We were launching out into new and unfamiliar experiences with determination to overcome any hazards that might come between us and our goal. We began our journey and trudged along through rain and sunshine ever faithful to each other and to our Alma Mater, always trying to uphold the best for which Wofford stood. As our Freshman leaders we chose Cecil Hawes, President; Worth Adams, Vice President; Reuben Gallman, Sec ' y and Treas. ; and Fleming Bomar, His- torian. Under the leadership of these men we passed through the many, many hardships that befell us. Finally, after what seemed to us, then, an eternity, we placed aside the role of freshman, and as the sun rose slowly into the Heavens, we continued our journey as Sophomores. However, we could still look back with pride on our Freshman achieve- ments, for many of our class had participated in extra curricula activities; and we were the proud possessors of the state championship in both football and basketball. But even more than that, we had proved that our class stood for only the highest in sportsmanship. Under the leadership of Worth Adams, President; Herbert Vaughan, Vice- President; T. A. Willis, Secretary; R. G. Gallman, Treasurer; and James Cald- well, Historian, we succeeded in passing through the many obstacles that con- fronted us during our second year of experiences at Wofford College. Our class was not only well represented in every college activity, but took the lead, and we were able to show the college the material of which we were composed. The men who were selected to lead us during our Junior year were John Mullikin, President; Herbert Vaughan, Vice-President; Edward Barrett, Secre- tary; Bud Hendley, Treasurer; and Bob DuBose, Historian. Again the Class of ' 36 proved its ability both in the class room and on the athletic field. In September, 193 5, we came back to Wofford to start our last lap of the race. The sun had moved higher into the heavens — It had begun to sink in the golden west. Our career was about to end. For our Senior officers we had chosen T. M. Brown, President; Edward Barrett, Vice President; Gerard Davidson, Secretary; R. N. DuBose, Historian; C. E. Strait, Class Poet; and J. L. Tolbert, Prophet. We, the Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors of yesterday, and the Alumni of tomorrow, realize that the Sun of our College Experiences is sinking fast, and we regret very much that our college career is about to end. However, we shall each go out with much determination to gain for ourselves a place in this new life upon which we are about to enter, and we will always be proud of the opportunity of having spent four years here. To those who follow us we give this word of encouragement, We know that your path will be rugged and steep, but all along the way there is much joy and happiness. Our journey is ended, and as we look back we rejoice over the happiness and success which has been ours. R. N. DuBose, Historian, ' 36. Page Seventy-seven Senior Class Poem The time has come for us to go, The lessons all are laid aside; With eager eyes and steps still slow, We go where men have lived and died. Go we to life, live well and clean And face the future with clear eyes; Disdain the petty and the mean — It is not asked that we be wise. For only years that store can bring Which other years will take away, Clay is our substance, suffering The fire that bakes and dries that clay. Life is not evil though some call It so; the laughter it can give Is free and good; but this of all Things first, I bid us bravely live! The hurt it gives is but the spice For sweets too sweet that tend to cloy; God ' s metaphysics doubles twice Through grief, the loveliness of joy! These splendid years that we have known Gave us the standards that we bear, And founded on good clean stone, With tools to build us passing fair. Man makes his heaven and his hell Of sorrow and of laughter; On earth we build — and must build well — Foundations of hereafter. — C. E. Strait. Page One Hundred Ten ♦ MAJOR SPORTS Page One Hundred Twelve Football Berry, Center Kellett, Guard Ashmore, Back In the 1935 Terriers, Coach Jules Carson presented a gridiron machine truly representative of the state, all except four members of the squad being natives of South Carolina. The Wofford team of the past season duplicated the record of ' 34 by winning four games, losing four and tieing one. The Terriers, resplendent in their new Gold and Black uniforms, opened the season against the highly B. Smith, Bath D. Smith, End touted Washington and Lee Generals at Lexington, Va., fighting doggedly as they limited the Generals to three touchdowns and an 1 8 to 0 victory. But the following week-end told a different story and found a vicious pack of Terriers turning back the Quakers from Guilford, 20-6. With hopes high, the local lads moved down to the City-by-the-Sea to encounter the Citadel Cadets on the sands of Hagood Stadium but were unable to click effectively, the dog-fight ending with Wofford on the LiNEBERGER, GltOrd S I EDEN SPI N NER, Clllird Lattimore, Guard Hendley, End Mulliki N , Center lower end of a 20 to 7 score. Opposing Erskine next on the Seceder ' s Homecoming Day, the Terriers time after time drove deep into Erskine territory, without mustering enough strength to cross the last white line, and the fracas ended in a scoreless tie. Catawba ' s powerful Indians completely upset a be- wildered pack of Terriers the following week, down- ing the Carson pupils 20-6. Following this Furman ' s famed House of Magic opened its bag of tricks on the scrappy Terriers and when the smoke of battle had Mahaffey, End Wofford, Tackle cleared away, Furman was leading 29 to 0. The Methodist ' s last half stand brought cheer to their sup- porters, however, as they limited the Purple Paladins to one touchdown. Taking a new lease on life, the local eleven annexed the three remaining games against stiff opposition. The first of these victories came against Newberry as the Terriers ruined the Indians ' homecoming occasion, set- Fowle, Tackle Avgerinos, Tackle Graham, Back Abercrombie, End Ariail. Tackle On a bitter cold day five thousand shivering, howl- ing spectators saw the Wofford lads celebrate their Homecoming Day with a closely fought 7-6 victory over Presbyterian. A battle throughout, the specta- tors came to their feet as Captain Anderson calmly booted the ball between the uprights for the point that was to prove the margin of victory. The Terriers ended their season by administering a stinging 26-12 defeat to the Rollins Tars in Leesburg, Fla. Nine seniors, playing the last game of their col- KlNARD, Bach Ror.ERS, Center lege careers, turned in brilliant performances. These men, Captain Anderson, Hawes, fleet all-state half- back, Ben Smith, Don Smith, Mullikin, Hendley, Abercrombie, Lineberger and Barnwell will long be remembered for their loyalty and service to their Alma Mater. And so we look now toward another football sea- son, anticipating even bigger and better things. We turn over the burden to next year ' s squad, and hope that they perform as capably as the men who are graduating and have played their final game. The 1936 slate shows a list of thirteen wins and eight losses, four of those losses to out-of-state schools. Under the capable leadership of Coach Roy Rob- ertson, the veterans of last year ' s squad, supplemented by several promising men from the Pups of 1935, co- operated fully with their youthful coach and former team mate to form a team that upheld the tradition of past Wofford quints and to give promise of many more successful teams under his tutelage. Completing the season with a listing of ten victories and five defeats against state teams, and ranking high in the S. I. A. A. with nine wins and one. loss, the flashy Terrier cagemen entered the S. I. A. A. tourna- ment at Jackson, Miss., where they were eliminated in the second round after a closely fought game with Louisiana Tech. No write-up would be complete if mention were not made of the final game of the year on the local court in which the closely matched quintets of Clemson and Wofford fought on even terms the entire evening, with the Bengals nosing out the home team in the last minute of play, 20-19. Five men in Old Gold and Black uniforms, Hendley, Anderson, Mullikin, More- head and Smith, were playing their last intercollegiate game on the home floor and played valiantly, covering themselves with glory even in defeat. It is a record in pictures of the events of the year and is delivered to every student at the end of the school term. The BOHEMIAN is an instrument for keeping alive the memories of the happy college life that the Senior regretfully leaves behind him. It permits one to live over again, in memory, that life, and to recall cherished friendships of the years gone by. It is hoped that this volume fulfills its purpose in recording a permanent record of the year ' s activities. G. Ligon HON. DANIEL CALHOUN ROPER Hon. Daniel C. Roper was born in Marlboro County, S. C, on April 1, 1867. Although Mr. Roper did not graduate from Wofford College, we feel that he should al- most be called a Wofford man because he was a student at Wofford for two years, the school years of 1884-85 and 1885-86. He received his A.B. degree at Trinity College in 1888. In 1901, he received an LL.B. at National Uni- versity in Washington. Tusculum College awarded him an LL.D. degree in 1927. Mr. Roper started his political career very early by serv- ing in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1892 to 1894. From 1894 to 1897 he was clerk of the U. S. Senate Committee on Interstate Commerce. He en- tered the U. S. Census Bureau in 1900. and served as an expert special agent until 1910. Then he was clerk of the Ways and Means Committee from 1910 to 1913. On March 14. 1913. he was appointed first Assistant Postmaster General, which position he held until 1916. From 1917 to 1920 he was Commissioner of Internal Revenue. His brilliant political career reached its highest peak when he was appointed Secretary of Commerce in the Cabinet of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933. Aside from his multiple political duties. Mr. Roper is the head of the law firm of Roper, Hurrey, and Dudley. ■ ■ Sponsor for The Bohemian James B. Caldwell.
