Senior Class History In the fall of 1931 we came to Wofford College as a group of average boys with average aims and desires. Many of us pledged to social fraternities, took an interest in lit- erary societies, debating, basketball, football and tennis. Our officers were: T. Marion Bennett, President; Harry G. Nesbitt, Vice-President, George R. Bethea, Secretary; Sam O. Canty, Jr., Treasurer, and Albert Vermont, Historian. With the opening of school in September, 1932, we returned to Wofford as full-fledged Sophomores under the leadership of Roy Robertson, President; Harry G. Nesbitt, Vice-President; Charles E. Gilreath, Secretary; T. Marion Bennett, Treasurer, and Horace C. Patterson, Historian. In the autumn of 1934 we missed from our college life Dr. Arthur Gaillard Rembert, who had served his fellow- men for forty years as a professor at Wofford College. But Dr. Rembert will ever live in the memory of all Wofford men who knew him. During this eightieth year of Wofford ' s history mem- bers of our class were successful in reawakening interest among the students in tennis and baseball to such an extent that our classmates at R. O. T. C. camp in Anniston were beaten only once in baseball. We selected as officers; B. T. Gault, President; T. Marion Bennett, Vice-President; V. R. Hickman, Secretary; J. J. Little, Treasurer, and -W. C. Herbert, Jr., Historian. Page Sixty-two 3 MIAN In September, 1934, we started on our last lap of the race called Wofford. Out of our Freshman class of 140 there remained only a comparatively small number, but others came in to raise our number to 65. For officers we chose: Frederic R. Atkinson, President; Homer S. Parnell, Jr., Vice-President; M. C. Smith. Secretary; F. H. Shuler, Treasurer; J. Russell Cross, Historian; David L. Benson, Prophet, and L. M. Cecil, Poet. Our members took an important part in extra-curricula activities: Gault, Jones, McCrary, Robertson, Parnell. Seidenspinner, and Graves were on our football team; Nor- rell, Robertson, and Zook Shuler excelled in basketball, and Hardin represented us in the State Oratorical Contest at Winthrop. In all these we came out well; but knowing that our road grows steeper — we do resolve ourselves to act as will become a man. With mingled satisfaction and regret we sign ourselves, THE CLASS OF ' 35. J. Russell Cross, Historian. Page Sixty-three Senior Class Poem Indeed, God ' s noblest work is there — The Senior, capped and gowned, who stands And twists a sheepskin in his hands, Who eyes the future without fear. He ' s finishing — he knows not what; He ' s starting for — he knows not where; And I believe he doesn ' t care — So eager to be off — Why not? ' Tis better: maybe if he knew What pains, what sorrows wait ahead To lead him down to his death bed — Perhaps he ' d falter if he knew. Oh God of eager youth, please hear! Our Alma Mater gathered here, The sons of Wofford everywhere Kneel down and join in this our prayer. Oh God, make this, our baby class, Our best. Look on them here; They ' ve finished college on the square. We pray that thus through life they ' ll pass. - And gracious God, if there be one Among us who has played unfair. Let not his sin bind him too near. Call back to truth thy erring son. Make every fight a fight to win; May every life a beauty be; May each find perfect love in Thee; All this we pray. Amen, Amen. L. M. Cecil, Jr. Page Sixty-four 0 Juniors MULLIKIN ' AUG II AN Barrett DuBosE Junior Class OFFICERS J. R. MULLIKIN, JR President H. E. Vaughan Vice-President H. E. Barrett Secretary A. E. Hendley Treasurer R. N. DuBosE Historian HISTORY In the fall of the year nineteen hundred and thirty-two one hundred and fifty neophytes, coming from all sections of this state and a few from other states enrolled as freshmen in Wofford. This was a new venture for us and we did not realize that we were launching ourselves into new and unfamiliar experiences. With courage and much determination we began to climb toward the goal of success. We trudged along through rain and sunshine, ever faithful to each other and to our Alma Mater and with enthusiastic devotion we tried to uphold the best that Wofford stood for. As our freshman leaders we chose Cecil Hawes. President; Worth Adams, Vice-President: Reuben Gallman, Secretary and Treasurer, and Fleming Bomar, Historian. Under the leadership of these men we passed through the hardships that are placed upon freshmen. Finally we put aside the role of freshmen, and as the sun gradually rose into the heavens, we stepped into our Sophomore year. Under the leadership of Worth Adams. President; Herbert Vaughan. Vice-President; T. A. Willis. Secretary; R. G. Gallman. Treasurer, and James Caldwell, Historian, we succeeded in passing through the many obstacles which confronted us during our second year of experience. Our class was well represented in every college activity. We led in representation in all forms of college athletics and during this year we were able to show the material we had in our class. As Juniors we elected the following men as officers: John Mullikin. President: Herbert Vaughan, Vice-President; Edward Barrett, Secretary; Bud Hendley, Treasurer, and Bob DuBose, Historian, We, the Freshmen and Sophomores of yesterday and the Seniors of tomorrow, realize that the sun of our college experiences is sinking fast and regret very much that we have only one more year to spend at Wofford, To those who follow us we give this word of encourage- ment, We know that your path will be rugged and steep, but all along the way you will find much joy and happiness. Our journey is almost ended and as we look back, we rejoice over the happiness and success which has been ours. We are about to go out into the world and take upon our shoulders the responsibilities of life and as duty calls us on we leave behind a hope of success for those who will take our places. Robert M. Bryant President . . Vice-President Secretary . . Treasurer Historian HISTORY In the fall of the year, l ' )3 3, there appeared on this campus a group of approximately 150 boys who were to enroll for the first time at Wofford. It was an ambitious group, with the desire to make for itself a record that would excel any preceding class. For one week the campus was theirs, and the traditions and the true spirit of the insti- tution were made known to them through talks and personal contact with the professors, and several outstanding upperclassmcn. Those days were enjoyable ones, but not for long, for soon there came surging down upon them, their friends, the Sophomores, who were intent on upholding the perogative of their greater wisdom and authority. As Freshmen, many of them participated in the extra curricula activities of the campus, and although not always the winners, they displayed a high type of sportsmanship, even in defeat. They chose as class officers to lead them through the freshman year: Lathan Mims, _ President: Henry Hill, Vice-President: Peter Moody, Secretary-Treasurer, and Kempson DeLoach, Historian. Under the guidance of these men they finished a profitable and enjoyable year. Time swiftly parsed, and they soon found themselves again at Wofford, but it was quite different then. The fear of a few months past had fled, and they found themselves unwill- ing to neglect their duties toward the freshmen. But this frivolity soon lost itself, however, in the great purpose of their attendance at Wofford — the securing of an education which would enable them to find their places in a social order which was growing more complex every day. Many of them engaged in the difl ' erent activities of the campus, trying to uphold their Alma Mater, and protect it from invasion, both in athletics and in literary activities. The men who were selected to lead the class for the year are: Fred Gentry. President: Henry Hill. Vice-President: J. K. Owens. Secretary: Spartan Dixon, Treasurer, and CuUen Bryant. Historian. And now as they come to the end of their Sophomore year, they look forward to greater and better things for the latter half of their career at Wofford. CuLLEN Bryant, Historian Class of ' 3 7. Evans Treasurer L. P. Jones Historian HISTORY On September 1 1, 1934, approximately one hundred and fifty young men assembled for the take-off of the good ship W. C. ' 38. Very few of these new passengers were very air- minded, but they embarked with high hopes for a long, safe, non-stop flight expected to last four years — barring accidents. Many of the old passengers welcomed the new-comers in a way strange to them, but finally the experienced ones seemed to be rriore congenial than they had been at first. We were soon hard at work holding onto our good ship, keeping ourselves from being thrown overboard. In about three months, however, we ran into our first great storm — our first term examinations; it was almost beyond our power to stick with the stick. To our sor- row, in this first storm we lost a few of our companions. After the squall we came out into the clearest weather that we had come across yet — Christmas holidays. Meantime, the Terrier Pups had admirably upheld the Wofford name on the gridiron. These boys appeared much better late in the season, showing good material for team of the fall of 1 935. Soon after the calm of Christmas we elected the pilots to help fly our ship through the remaining part of the first leg of our journey. Jim Ariail, of Columbia, was elected chief pilot of the freshman class; Paul Alexander, Jr.. of Laurens, was elected co-pilot; Claude Evans, of Anderson, was made secretary, and the heavy duties of the purser were turned over to Joe Ashmore, of Spartanburg. The Pup cagers showed up as the football team had — becoming stronger as the season advanced. The Class of 1 938 has contributed also to the Glee Club, literary societies, the Y. M. C. A. and other extra-curricula activities. Upon looking back on our first long flight we see that as flyers we have in some instances conducted ourselves well, while at other times we have been found lacking in skill. Thus we look forward to another three years with anticipation of a successful non-stop flight with new worlds to be conquered by our noble adventurers — and may they all have happy landings! The founders of the organization believe that such groups of leaders, unifying and relating the administration of all campus activities, are highly effective instruments of service. The Terrier Boosters, Wofford ' s chapter, claims its right to exist only on a basis of service to the College. The chapter, whose membership is limited to Juniors and Seniors, not to exceed thirty-five in number, meets twice monthly. Election to Blue Key is considered a signal honor. Dean A. M. DuPRE. ATHLETI ' ANDREWS FIELD HOUSE The Andrews Field House was erected in 1929 through a contribution made by Mr. Isaac Andrews. It is a spacious gymnasium in which are held all indoor sports. Carson Frost Terrier Coaches Head Coach CARSON Coach Jules Carson came to us after a very successful career as Assistant Coach at Furman University. Already he has demonstrated his ability as an Athletic Director and has developed the best football team we have had for several seasons. Great things are expected of him in the future. Assistant Coach FROST Coach Jack Frost was an able assistant to Coach Carson in football and again turned out an excellent basketball team. The basketball team was pushing the winners in both South Carolina and S. I. A. A. competition. Page One Hundred Eighty-nine MiMs Brown Ragsdale Noble Cheer Leaders Travis M. Proudly stands our Alma Mater As the years go by. Chorus May it ever be our watchword — Conquer and prevail, Hail to thee, our Alma Mater. Dear old Wofford, hail! Cherished by thy sons forever, When we from thy halls have parted. Memories sweet will throng And life ' s battle is on, ' Round our hearts, dear Alma Mater, Thy great spirit will inspire us As we sing thy song. Till eternal dawn. C 7 Paoe One Hundred Ninety-tiuo Football Writeup The 1934 Football squad enjoyed its most successful season in several years by winning four games, losing four, and tying one. In the first game of the season, the Terriers held the strong Washington and Lee eleven to nineteen points. They opened the home season by holding the Purple Hurricane of Furman to two touchdowns. In this game, after yielding one touchdown, the Terriers were well on the way to the tying score when a Furman player intercepted a pass to rob them of it. Next they com- pletely submerged the South Georgia Teacher ' s College by 3 2 to 0. This was the first time of the season they had been able to cross the goal line but they made up for all the time they had lost. Erskine fell under the Terrier attack, 20 to 7 This victory was followed by one over Newberry. Then the Terriers journeyed into sunny Florida to meet the University of Miami. Unused to the heat and to night football, they fell before Miami ' s attack, 48 to 14. Before a large crowd of Wofi ' ord and Citadel supporters, the Terriers were defeated by the fast and shifty Bulldogs from the City by the Sea. Going into the Old North State, the Terriers took Catawba by surprise and came through with a 28 to 0 victory. In Clinton, before a home-coming; crowd, the Terriers and the Blue Stock- ing fought hard for sixty long minutes and when the final whistle blew, each eleven emerged with seven points. This was Coach Carson ' s first year with Wofford and he did excellent work. We are looking for many successful seasons under his tutelage.
