And such was our own beloved Doctor Rembert. He lives and will ever live in the hearts and lives of those who knew and loved him. NOBLE BENEFACTORS 1854-1934 An unbroken record of eighty years service, crowned with lofty achievements, is your reward. We are humbly grateful. President Vice-President , , . , Secretary HOLMAN C. GOSSETT J. C. Bagwell George Baker Historian Prophet . . . . Poet HISTORY In the autumn of nineteen hundred and thirty, one hundred and one boys enrolled in the Freshman class at Wofford College. We were a dumb looking class of Freshmen, but we were determined to see our first year through to its close. We elected the following men as class officers: President, Herbert Hucks; Vice-President, Jack Brady; Secretary, Thomas Diseker; Treasurer, Grover B. Faker: Historian, W. H. Kinard. For the Sophomore year we chose for President, John F. Holler; Vice- President, Thomas Diseker; Secretary, J. G. Hughes: Historian, Guyland H. Hamlin. This year we were able to show what kind of material we had in our class. Some of the members of our class proved their ability on the foot- ball field, and on the basketball court; still other boys in our class took an active part in debating and declaiming. . . Page Thirty-two H. C. GOSSETT Commencement Speakers J. M. Humphries R. F. Cecil H. HucKs, Jr. We selected the following men to guide us through our Junior year: Presi- dent, Grover B. Eaker: Vice-President, Herbert Hacks; Secretary, J. Gordon Hughes: Treasurer, J. A. Bouknight: Historian, Holman C. Gossett. This year we returned to college with very troublesome things behind us — physics and Sophomorism. Many members of our class took a very active part in football, debating and oratory: the varsity basketball team was second in the race for the State Championship. During our Junior year, both the Freshman foot- ball and basketball teams were State Champions — this means they beat Fur- man. J. M. Humphries, Gerald DuBose, Holman C. Gossett and Howard Kelly were the men who participated in the Junior Debate at the commencement exercises. In September, 193 3, some sixty-four boys entered the Senior class, and we elected as our class leaders: President, Herbert Hucks: Vice-President, Richard A. Elliott: Secretary, C. B. Mooneyham: Historian, Holman C. Gos- sett; Prophet, J. C. Bagwell; Poet, George Baker. When school opened, after the summer vacation, both the faculty and the students had to become accus- tomed to the absence of Dr. A. G. Rembert, who passed away during the sum- mer. Dr. Rembert was a son of WofFord, and one of Wofford ' s most valuable and beloved teachers. This school year marks Wofford ' s first step toward be- coming a co-educational institution. We have one girl in our class. Miss Betty DuPre. This school year also marks the incoming of Roosevelt to the Presi- dency, and the lifting of the depression. We now bid you farewell. Holman C. Gossett, Historian of the Class of 1934. Page Thir ty-three Anderson Bagwell WILLIAM MARSHALL ANDERSON, A.B. WHITE STONE, S. C. Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man. Page Sixty-five Senior Class Poem Strange parhelions have flickered along our way, Strange voices have sung an alluring lay, Our Fleshy Barks have borne us thus far, Onward we sail toward our evening star. Around the after-glow of Black and Gold, The shades of night our lives enfold, Incasing our souls in that darkness. Beyond the night the day is breaking, A world awaits us for the taking. Let the weak and faithless banish fear. Let the brave and valiant the challenge hear. Far and wide is spread the fame. Of our dear Alma Mater ' s name. To each of us comes her beckoning. George A. Baker, Class Poet, 1934. Page Sixty-six JUNIORS Gault Bennett Hickman Little Herbert President . . Vice-President Secretary . Treasurer Historian HISTORY In the third year of the reign of that most puissant lord of lords. Herbert Hoover, there came to Wofford College the most magnificent class of Fresh- men this old institution had ever seen, at least our beloved President, Dr. Snyder, so stated. For one week the period of back-pattmg by everyone per- sisted, then much to our painful surprise, our friends, the Sophomores, insisted on shifting it to a lower locality. However, we soon became habituated, if not toughened, to the whimsical and peculiar sense of humor exhibited on the campus, and under the leadership of T. Marion Bennett, President: Harry G. Nesbitt, Vice-President: George R. Bethea, Secretary: Sam O. Canty. Jr.. Treasurer: and Albert Vermont. Historian, we finished a profitable and enjoy- able year. Junior Class OFFICERS B. T. Gault T. Crum Calhoun Literary Preston Literary Carlisle Literary Snyder Literary Society Society Society Society The following September we returned ready, nay even eager, not to shirk our duty toward the Freshman class, and with the sacred oath to do our level best to pass physics I. We did not neglect the extra curricula activity part of our college careers, and many and valuable players on the various teams repre- senting WofFord came from our class. As officers we chose: President, Roy Robertson; Vice-President, Harry G. Nesbitt: Secretary, Charles E. Gilreath; Treasurer, T. Marion Bennett; Historian, Horace C. Patterson. As Juniors (in that intermediate step between the sophistication of the Sophomore and the dignity of the Senior) we applied ourselves to the delicate art of campus loquacity, vulgarly known as bull-shooting. Our officers for the year were: President, B. T. Gault; Vice-President, T. Marion Bennett; Secretary, V. R. Hickman; Treasurer, J. J. Little; Historian, W. C. Herbert, Jr. Looking back, with a faint tinge of regret for lost opportunities on our three years spent at Wofford, we resolve, as Seniors, to utilize every oppor- tunity to make of ourselves men. Page Seventy-six SOPHOMORES Adams Vaughan - Willis Caldwell Sophomore Class OFFICERS ■ Worth Adams , . . . President Herbert E. Vaughan Vice-President T. A. Willis Secretary R. G. GaLLMAN Treasurer J. B. Caldwell, Jr Historian HISTORY In the fall of the year MCMXXXII a group of about one hundred and fifty neophytes embarked for the tranquil and peaceful shores of Minerva. The sea raged for many days, belch- ing forth a species of red-horned fish, more commonly known as Sophomores. These deadly and powerful pests fell upon the tyros and attempted to annihilate them, but defeat was not for these true sailors — they were superior to any that sailed before! On and on they struggled, adding glorious victories to their immortal record. A government was organized in the folds of this leviathan, and the leadership fell to the lot of Cecil Hawes, president: Worth Adams, vice-president; Reuben Gallman, secretary-treasurer, and Flemming Bomar, historian. Many moons pass, and we find our gallant band of initiates reaching the welcomed shore. They are battered, worn and lessened in number, but still courageous at heart. Here they are accosted by difficult tasks and responsibilities, and can only emerge after three years of hard labor. They set to work diligently to alleviate the upper classmen ' s cares and worries. Many uphold their athletic records by joining the ranks of the veterans, and protecting the Alma Mater from foreign invasions. Others score triumphs in scholarship and societies. The leaders for this year are: Worth Adams, president: Herbert Vaughan, vice-president; T. A. Willis, secretary, and R. G. Gallman, treasurer. So, as the second glorious year in the stronghold of Wofford slowly wanes, the Sopho- more class leaves behind them enviable records to be paragons for the future Terriers. — James Caldwell, Historian. FRESHMEN MiMS ■ Hill - Moody DeLgach Freshman Class OFFICERS LATHAN MiMS President Henry Hill Vice-President Peter Moody Secretary -Treasurer KEMPSON DeLOACH Historian HISTORY On the morning of September 12, 1933, approximately one hundred and fifty boys awoke with an unusual feeling. We ate breakfast in a very formal manner, for our minds were filled with far greater thoughts than the satisfying of appetites. This was to be the day when we must leave home for an entirely new environment. With a fear of the new and unknown, we bade our loved ones farewell and began our expectant trek to our destination — the campus of Wofiford College. After matriculating we had three days of leisure. During this time the campus was ours, and we learned from talks and personal contacts the true spirit of the institution which we were entering. We were made to feel the sacred traditions of the college in order to be better fitted to carry them forward where others had left off. We also met our future teachers and found them to be a considerate group of men, who were always ready to help us. At the end of the first week, however, the flood of upperclassmen who surged down upon us, changed conditions entirely. Nevertheless when we became better acquainted, we found that they were agreeable fellows, who were merely fulfilling their traditional charge with a stern sense of duty. Many members of our class have participated in the two major sports — football and basketball. Although not always on the long end of the score, our teams have always given their best, always fought, and always displayed a high type of sportsmanship. With these qtialities and more experience, great things may be accomplished before three more years have passed. Other extra-scholastic activities also received the support of the members of our class. The Glee Club, literary societies and Y. M. C. A. work hold bright prospects for those who have chosen to labor in these nelds. As Freshmen, we chose for the class officers: Lathan Mims, president; Henry Hill, vice-president; Peter Moody, secretary-treasurer, and Kempson DeLoach, historian. Now that we have finished the first year of college and look back over our achievements, we regret that we did not make a better use of our opportunities. But, yet, it has been a happy year, full of new conditions and jiroblems, through which we have gained an experience which better fits us to complete more successfully the three remaining years of our college life. So, as we leave the Freshman class, we are looking forward to our Sophomore year with its greater opportunities and graver responsibilities. Kempson DeLoach, Historian. Prospects were bright, and everyone looked to a successful season for the Terriers. However, the first week had not passed before a succession of dis- asters caused a downward trend in Wofford stock. Three mainstays of 1932 were declared ineligible because of scholastic difficulties, and this was followed by a dismal parade of injuries which was so constant that in no time during 193 3 was Wofford able to throw her full strength against an opponent. Even Page One Hundred with these handicaps, Coaches Scaffe and Frost produced a fast offensive team which was a threat at all times and completed the season with a record of six losses and three victories. In the opening game of the season, the inexperienced Terriers bowed to the Carolina Gamecocks, 32-0. The Davidson Wildcats then turned back the Old Gold and Black warriors in a game full of offensive thrills. Next a su- perior Wofford team repulsed Lenoir Rhyne with a one-point victory. On the following Saturday, the Terriers turned in another extra-point victory, this time over the Erskine Seceders, 13-12. The next game was the greatest dis- appointment of the season to Wofford supporters. Although supposed to be on even terms, the Blue Stockings from P. C. pushed a half-sick, unresponsive Terrier over Snyder Field, for practically an entire Home-Coming afternoon, and the game ended with a score of 26-6 in the Presbyterians ' favor. The powerful Purple Hurricane then swept aside the Wofford team by a 38-0 score. Then, the game of games, Wofford versus Clemson, Armistice Day, November 1 1, 1933. On a beautiful fall afternoon, a dauntless Terrier and a ponderous Tiger fought a battle to the finish. With the lead constantly changing from side to side, both teams fought with the will to win, but when all was over, Wofford 14, Clemson 13. In the next two games Wofford was seriously hampered by the loss of her All-State Back, Bouknight, and lost to both New- berry and The Citadel. All in all, from the standpoint of victories, the season was not an ex- tremely successful one, but the familiar words of Wofford ' s motto can be ap- plied to the 1933 Terrier team: Intaminatis fulget honocibus. Playing a flashy brand of basketball, the Terriers were a constant threat to any of their opponents. Led by Captain Mooneyham who was the second high scorer in South Carolina, the Terriers completed their season with a state record of eleven victories and five losses and a S. I. A. A. record of nine victories and two losses. The outstanding game of the season resulted in a defeat for the Terriers. On the night of February 24, twenty-five hundred people jammed the field house to see the contest between the Terriers and the South Carolina Game- cocks. The game was beautifully played and the final score was Carolina 36, Wofford 31. Even in defeat, the Old Gold and Black team covered themselves with glory, and every Wofford man was proud of his team. No Wofford team in recent years has had the brilliance and color of the 1934 edition, and with sorrow we see its passing, yet ever looking to a more successful and brilliant team for 1935.
