Science Spurs Intellectual Investigation The Science Department at Woburn High School, a combination of the Physi¬ cal Science Department and the Biological Science Department, is well equipped to satisfy the intellectual needs of students. The number of advances in laboratory techniques and the modification of equip¬ ment have necessitated the installation of Advanced Placement courses in Chemistry and Biology. There is also a possibility for the addition of an Advanced Placement course in Physics for next year. For the student who wishes to pursue a discipline that lies outside the realm of class study and laboratory work, there is the annual Science Fair. Participation in this event enables the student to demon¬ strate his knowledge of a particular sub¬ ject, in which he is interested. This combination of classroom study, laboratory, work, and investigation of in¬ terests, creates a greater freedom and in¬ terest for the study of the sciences, because the student can study scientific phenomena through contact with his classmates and with the world of nature. Experiment in progress in the chemistry class.

The goal of the Math Department, under the direction of Miss Virginia Hall, is to introduce forms of mathematics that will be meaningful and useful to students after graduation. Well-trained teachers aware of what’s happening in a rapidly changing field, the latest in textbooks and equipment, and an expanding math library contribute to a math depart¬ ment. An active Math Club, and a successful Team show that the students are taking full advantage of the math training. The Math Team has competed with teams from surrounding communities and has won distinction in many meets. Several Woburn High students have been awarded top prizes and individual honors, a fine tribute to the excellence of the Department and its instructors. 30 Miss Hall ponders over student’s question
