One Wednesday afternoon in early September, it happened. We cast off our lines and sailed out of Chesapeake Bay, directed our course south, and were en route to the Panama Ca- nal, our first stop on our way to the Orient. We relaxed in the fine weather of the islands and were soon under- way for Yokosuka, Japan, on the longest leg of our voyage and toward its end point. 127
