EES 3 N 1 if SGI. kahfllna 7g.Y -My IU! ' 'W cor Ia N s 'I I CHARLES SHEPARD DAVIS, President PRESIDENT OF THE COLLEGE Dr. Charles S. Davis, President of Winthrop College and Professor of History, came to Winthrop in I959 with the purpose of expanding the college both aca- demically and physically. Under his leadership, Win- throp College has had steady progress in strengthening its academic program. This is evidenced by exploration of new ways of teaching, a special honors program pro- vided to challenge the academically gifted, increased holdings in the library, and special teaching facilities such as the language laboratory. During his term of otfice, the student body has almost doubled. The current enrollment of 2600 is projected to be 3,300 next Fall. In order to house and maintain this burgeoning student body two new dorm- itories-one a dining hall-dormitory complex-have been built. An addition was added to one of the dormitories and Crawford Infirmary, and extensive reno- vation was done in two underclassmen dormitories. Dr. Davis is seeing that quality education comes into its own as the direct result of growing size and expansion of undergraduate and graduate programs. z X M, Q 5 C Dr. Davis and his wife, the former Mary Greenfield Merrit, main- tain residence on campus with their three daughters. 23 3?
