1982-83 Girl and Boy Staters The Winter Haven High School faculty nominated students from the ’82-83 Junior class to attend a political convention at Florida State University in Tallahassee for a week last summer. As nominees of our school, these students gave speeches in front of the American Legion. The following were chosen to participate in the Girl and Boy’s State: Jill Stewart, Kim Snively, Kim LoCicero, Leslie Pitters, Tony Aguilar, Mike Bradford, Chris Fields, Billy McGarrity, Chris Eisen-chenk, Matt Butz, David Hart, Jon LaPan, David Clark, John Powell, and Brian Truesdale. The alternates were: Diane Enos, Laeta Kalogridis, Karen Milligan and Laura Hobbs. The Girl and Boy Staters acquired a better understanding of the government, and they also discovered hidden qualities in themselves. The students started by learning about city elections, county, and then state. These select students learned how to present themselves in front of people. They also learned how to cooperate, be responsible, and also to have courage and ambition. The Girl and Boy Staters lectured, debated, voted, and wrote bills. This increased their knowledge concerning governmental procedures. After returning home, all agreed that this was a worthwhile and memorable experience.
