Stewart. Dr. Stewart was born in Sullivan, Indiana. He and his wife, Susan, have two children, Laura and Emily. During his career in education, he has served as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal. He has also served on many educational-related committees for the school system. Dr. Stewart plays an important role at Winter Haven High School because he becomes involved in so many school activities. A man constantly on the go, whether it be counseling a bewildered student, or tackling the enormous amount of administrative paperwork, he demonstrates his unending devotion to his work. With a constant smile, open arms, and concerned ear. Dr. Stewart goes far beyond his designated job and happily gives his own time to make these happy memories for Winter Haven High School students. Dedication 17 18 Division Our 1982-1983 Devil’s Darling Theresa Dezan was chosen as the 19821983 Devil’s Darling. This was the second year of Devil’s Darling, sponsored by the Future Homemakers of America (FHA). The event raised $200 to support the J.C. Cain Memorial Fund. Her role was to promote good public relations, school spirit, and participation in school activities. She acted as the Athletic Department’s Spirit Ambassador, helping at various sports events, such as the county and district basketball tournaments. 20 Student Life Dream Girl Pageant... As nominees of our school, these students gave speeches in front of the American Legion. The following were chosen to participate in the Girl and Boy’s State: Jill Stewart, Kim Snively, Kim LoCicero, Leslie Pitters, Tony Aguilar, Mike Bradford, Chris Fields, Billy McGarrity, Chris Eisen-chenk, Matt Butz, David Hart, Jon LaPan, David Clark, John Powell, and Brian Truesdale. The alternates were: Diane Enos, Laeta Kalogridis, Karen Milligan and Laura Hobbs. The Girl and Boy Staters acquired a better understanding of the government, and they also discovered hidden qualities in themselves. The students started by learning about city elections, county, and then state. These select students learned how to present themselves in front of people. They also learned how to cooperate, be responsible, and also to have courage and ambition. The Girl and Boy Staters lectured, debated, voted, and wrote bills. This increased their knowledge concerning governmental procedures. After returning home, all agreed that this was a worthwhile and memorable experience. Rivalry between the Winter Haven Blue Devils and the Auburndale Bloodhounds has been a tradition for many years. This year there was no exception. Many preparations were made — pep rallies and bonfire. Band members and athletes practiced hard. Epcot is an amusement park larger than the Magic Kingdom which will eventually house Fest Complexes from each of the Kingdoms of the World. The Fest Complexes contain foods, information, and souvenirs from their country. The W.H.H.S. Band was invited to participate in the Park’s opening celebration. Student Life 47 Devils At Work And Play Many Blue Devils held part-time jobs during the school year. CBE, DECA, and other students worked in such places as clothing stores, professional offices, restaurants and fast foods, grocery stores and Cypress Gardens. Many of those students worked for extra cash for personal expenses, saving for a car, college or for pleasure; while others wanted experience in their fields of study and a jump in the job market. But “all work and no play makes a Blue Devil a dull devil.” There were also times for play, and no one does it better than a Devil. Darlene Garner: clothing store Danny Farley likes mud slinging. Bruce and Darrel’s school day is over and playtime begins. 48 Student Life Shelly Wentz: toy store. Deanna Bernstein: snack bar. Stone Age “Rock,” “Break a Leg. Governor Bob Graham’s arrival. Student Ufe 49 Devils Show Their This year, the Philos sponsored our 1982-1983 Christmas King and Queen. The nominations were made by clubs, homerooms, and other organizations. Each nominee brought in a baby picture and they were placed in the cafeteria. People donated money for the cutest baby. The names were kept secret. Kim Holley and Buck Thomas were voted 1982-1983 Christmas King and Queen. They were introduced at the Christmas dance, which was sponsored by the Junior Class. Student Council sponsored the Christmas assembly. It was a big success with much enthusiasm and spirit. 50 Student Life Christmas Spirit Student Life 51 Fads and Fashions The 1982-83 school year was a great year for futuristic fads and very stylish fashions. Normally you would only have seen these fads and fashions in some “way out” magazine in another day and time. But this is the 80’s and almost anything was acceptable. Styles cluttered store shelves and racks ranging from red, white, and blue “sailor look”; polka-dotted, leopard, and striped mini skirts; multi-colored hose; the tuxedo look with bow ties; ruffled shirts, collars, and cuffs; prairie skirts and boots; leg warmers and heels; and preppy things such as Shetland sweaters, double layers, oxford shirts, boat shoes, and penny loafers, Izod, Polo and Saddle Bred. Other fads just as popular as fashion clothing included punk glasses, punk haircuts, punk groups and devoted punk fans; popular music from the Go-Go’s, Flock of Seagulls, The Police, Prince, Gapp, The Time, Alabama, Hank Williams, Youth Alive, Mic Jagger and groovin reggae which jammed the air waves; long dangling earrings of double, triple and even quadruple ear piercing; guys wearing earrings and girls in ties; cars such as the sleek riding Z-28’s, 280ZX’s, Camaros, and Porsche; Asteroids, Centipede, Donkey-Kong, and Pac-Man video games; lovable creatures, with E.T. as the nation’s favorite, Garfield, the Smurfs, and the Muffets. Funny people kept us laughing, with comedy from Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Bill Murray, and Gilda Radner. Then out in California we get the Valley Girls and Square Pegs with popular sayings like “gag me with a spoon,” “fer sure,” “like totally,” “grody to the max” and “hey dude.” 52 Student Life Student Life 53 54 Student Life Student Life 55 “Golden Days” Relived Remember the days when you were an innocent sophomore having trouble finding your way around school, selling magazines as a junior and being measured for a cap and gown as a senior. There were also the times you were late to class, stumbled in front of a group of girls, and forgot about that pop quiz. Those were the golden days at W.H.H.S. Those moments and more have been captured in these pictures so that you’ll always remember being a W.H.H.S. Blue Devil. Blue and Gold forever! Student Life 59 One of the greatest joys of student life was making friends and establishing long-lasting friendships. Surely everyone had a friend that helped him through the day at one time or another. Many of these friendships will continue long after high school. Hanging out is one of the favorite pastimes of friends. The most popular hangouts for the 1983 school year were McDonalds, the game rooms, Tastee Freeze, Super Skates, N.E. Recreation Complex, The Hanger and J. Burns Pizza. Friends also liked to have fun when they got together. Going to movies, dances, having parties, mud slinging, lying out on Daytona Beach, skiing, and playing ball were just some of the ways Devils had fun. Friends .. . Hanging Out Knocking heads. The long, hard work which you have put into this book will be remembered and valued always. I am sure you will agree, as you reflect back on the year with me, that it was a year filled with happiness, sadness, successes, and failures, but that it was also a happy year of learning and growing together and these are the experiences that all help to make us better people. My wish for you is that every success and happiness that life has to offer will be yours. As I reflect upon the 1982-83 school year, 1 am reminded of the banner hanging in the cafeteria at the beginning of school. The banner stated, “this is going to be a great year.” I truly believe that this was a great year. The cooperation of the student body has been tremendous. You’re a great bunch of people, and we at Winter Haven High School are proud of you. This year, in response to student request, we have added about six new courses. This is in keeping with our philosophy to provide an educational program which meets the needs of our students. You are a wonderful group of students and it is a real pleasure to be associated with you. 134 Academics 1982-83 This school year has seen students begin to realize that part of the responsibility of “having something to do” rests with the student. Our student leaders have taken the first steps to meet this responsibility; and if our clubs and organizations follow their lead, we will truly have a school where all students take pride because they Beginnings are always exciting and challenging. Starting the 1982-1983 school year proved no exception. The W.H.H.S. faculty and student body are outstanding in every aspect — and each year’s undertakings and achievements surpass those of preceding ones. 1 am pleased and proud to be a part of this year’s strive for excellence. The year of ’82 and ’83 at W.H.H.S. will be remembered as one of high achievement for many students, in the fields of academics and athletics. Looking back, many will remember all their fond memories and accomplishments during the ’82-’83 year. They demonstrated this with an opening game win over the Lake Wales Highlanders. On their first possession of the game, the Blue Devils took the ball 70 yards for a touchdwon and the lead, 7-0. Lake Wales did not recover until the second quarter when they put together a 77 yard drive to score and tie up the game. The Big Blue did not score again until the third quarter when quarterback Matt Moore scored on a sneak up the middle. The extra point failed but the touchdown was enough to give the Blue Devils a 13-7 victory. W.H. Vs. Lakeland The Blue Devils suffered their first defeat of the season with an 180 loss to the Lakeland Dreadnaughts. The Dreadnaughts capitalized on the many Blue Devil mistakes in the first half to pull ahead 1 lO. Into the second half the Blue Devils made a few scoring threats but were unable to put together a successful drive to score. Late in the fourth quarter Lakeland scored on a play set up by a Winter Haven fumble, pulling the game and victory out of Big Blue reach. Sports 177 The Big Blue “kicks off to Lakeland. Big Blue W.H. Vs. Merritt Island A fired up Blue Devil team entered this game with great hopes of victory. It was not to be. The game began well, with the Big Blue scoring on a 16 yard pass from quarterback Steve Henderson to Randy Alexander on the first Winter Haven possession of the ball. David Etheridge kicked the extra point. Late in the first period the Mustangs tied it up with a touchdown pass, 7-7. Before the half was up, Merritt Island passed for two more touchdowns to pull ahead 21-7. Late in the third quarter, on probably the biggest play of the game, Henderson connected with Terry Bellman for an 82 yard touchdown play. But the Devils great playing wasn’t enough as the Mustangs scored again in the fourth period to take the victory, 28-14. W.H. Vs. Sarasota Riverview The game played between Winter Haven and Sarasota Riverview was called by many as a battle of the trenches. An afternoon shower had dumped nearly two inches of rain on the field. The Rams went ahead 7-0 in the second period on a run that was set up by a Winter Haven fumble. Plagued by injuries before and during the game, the Big Blue couldn’t seem to get a break. The Blue Devils had not been able to complete a pass until the fourth quarter. By then it was too late, as the Rams pulled out of range with a touchdown in the last seconds of the game. This defeat brought Winter Haven’s record to 1-3. Out-maneuvering Mustangs is hard, but can be done. 178 Sports QB Matt Moore tosses a pass over Ram defenders. Plays to Win Tari Wright heads for open field. W.H. Vs. Edgewater Winter Haven took to the road to meet Edgewater in Orlando and snap their three game losing streak. Neither team could seem to muster the ability to score in the first half with both missing many opportunities. But late in the third period, junior quarterback Steve Henderson burst into the end zone on a four yard keeper. With the kick by Etheridge the Devils gained a 7-0 lead. The Edgewater Eagles were held from scoring until the fourth quarter when they tied the game 7-7. It wasn’t long before the Big Blue again took the lead to win the game 14-7. W.H. Vs. Kathleen Defense played an important part in the Red Devil defeat. With the thoughts of victory still fresh in the minds of the Blue Devils, they again pulled out another win — this time at home over the Kathleen Red Devils. The victory wasn’t altogether easy though. Each team scored once in the first half but were unable to again reach the end zone. At the end of regulation play the score remained deadlocked at 7-7, forcing the game into overtime. The Blue Devils soon acquired the victory, though, on a fourth down four yard pass to bring the final score to 13-7. This win gave the Big Blue an even record of three wins and three losses. Sports 179 Finishing Up W.H. vs. Haines City The Blue Devils had their homecoming activities dampened with an untimely loss to the Haines City Hornets. With their first possession of the ball, the Hornets drove down field for a touchdown and extra point to take a 7-0 lead. With the time remaining in the first period, the Hornets pushed to score again, 14-0. Neither team could muster a scoring drive in the remainder of the first half. The second half brought the Devils to life. David Etheridge split the uprights from 33 yards out to put the Big Blue on the board. The Devils were now on the move and drove 53 yards to score with their next possession of the ball. A comeback seemed inevitable. But it was not to be as the Hornets held out to win, 14-10. Hornet stings are nothing if you're a Blue Devil. W.H. vs. Sarasota Things looked bad for the Big Blue from the beginning of the game. The Sarasota Sailors cut loose to score 28 points in the first period. The Devils played hard but couldn’t score until the second quarter on a one yard run. The Sailors were held from scoring the rest of the game by the Winter Haven defense. The Blue Devils were plagued with turnovers throughout the night. This hurt their chances of scoring greatly. Even with the setbacks, the Devils were able to score again before the end of the game. This final attempt was far short as the Sailors took the victory, 28-14. Billy and Matt warm up before a game. 180 Sports W.H. vs. Manatee the Season j David Etheridge awaits a pass in open field. The battle between the Blue Devils and the Manatee Hurricanes was somewhat of a standoff. The Big Blue opened up the scoring with a one yard run for the touchdown, but the extra point failed. Manatee came back to tie the score in the second period and then take the lead with a two point conversion. The Hurricanes then padded their lead with a 55 yard touchdown jaunt. Manatee, then intercepted a Blue Devil pass and returned it 55 yards for yet another touchdown, bringing the score to 21-6. With a little over seven minutes left in the game, the Devils were brought closer to the Hurricanes with a touchdown and two-point conversion. The game was quickly sealed though, by a 42 yard bomb for a Manatee touchdown, ending the game with a 28-14 score. It takes more than a few Hounds to stop a Devil. W.H. vs. Auburndale The annual battle of these two fierce rivals was every bit as exciting as expected to be. Both teams fought extremely hard and neither could score in the first half. The second half was a different story. The Bloodhounds pulled together and scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to take the lead 12-0. The Devils did not manage to score until the last period when they closed the point spread to 12-7. The Dogs would not be held back and scored one more touchdown to raise the score seven points Try as they may, the Devils could only score once more. Final score. Bloodhounds — 19, Blue Devils — 14. A bud it was. And will forever be, Now a soul. In God’s eternity. It leaves behind An empty space, That no other flower. Will ever replace. Time will heal, The hurt and pain But the memories. Will always remain. Intangible now, But we have no fear. Because we know Our Rose is still near. Nothing of substance. Or material But the memories we have, No one can steal. We must live for today. Not our tomorrows Because we all live On time that is borrowed. We never know, Which Rose will die, But the sad part is, We never get to say, “Goodbye.” — Shelley Imber Greg Baggett J. C.
