Most WHS graduates have known her from either junior or senior English classes where, they report, they were required to work hard but had a good time anyway. Mrs. McAuley indicates that she intends to retire at the end of this school year. We wish her well in her planned retirement and are happy for her but a bit saddened that the million candlepower McAuley smile may not be here next year. 1982 METEOR DEDICATEE STUDENT BODY OFFICERS Our student body officers helped make 1981-2 a fun and productive year at WHS. Sponsoring many spe cial activities and days.” for the student body, they made it a year to remember. Part of their success came from the members' attendance at the 50th Annual Student Council Convention in Tucson. June 25-29. There they shared ideas with 1500 students from all over the country. Us To Victory 4 Government Can Be Interesting, This year, as last year and most of the years before, the boys and girls staters came home with the importance of parliamentary procedures imbedded in their minds. They were also made to realize the importance of total participation if government is to be successful. Frank Guzman, Charles Wilhoite, Rory Whipple, and Eddie Fritz were chosen to represent Winslow at the 35th annual Boys State held at NA(J May 30 through June 5. Guest speakers included Governor Bruce Babbitt. Sec. of State Rose Mofford. Flagstaff mayor Paul Babbitt, and John Wettah. Rita Lewis. La Rita Wilkins, and Donna Graybeal were the 1982 Girls State electees. Donna Graybeal, alternate, was a last minute fill-in when La Rita could not make it. It was held at (J of A on June 8-14. The American Legion Auxiliary sponsored the girls while the Elks. Rotary. American Legion, and Kiwanis clubs sponsored the boys. 6 And It Can Be Very Demanding Seniors entering American Government and Arizona History Government found the class to be no piece of cake. Tough as it got though, the seniors had to stick it out if they wanted to graduate as the class is a state requirement. Teachers of the class this year were Mr. Griffith. Mr. Don Baker, and Mr. Bratt. Homecoming 1981 The 1981 Homecoming Pep Assembly was held on Thursday. October 15th in the gymnasium. Eddie Fritz and Priscilla Bailon were crowned as the home coming king and queen. Friday afternoon the class floats were judged. The Senior float came in first, followed closely by the juniors. All the floats were decorated around the homecoming theme Just Once . On Friday night the Bulldogs met the Window Rock Scouts. The Bulldogs stomped the Scouts with a stun ning score of 51-2. Pricilla Bailon does her part during the pep assembly. Laura Smith and Robert Efaw work together on a assignment. This year's Homecoming parade was a great success with floats and decorated cars representing classes and clubs. The seniors once again captured the contest of the class floats while the juniors took the second place ribbon. The freshman followed the juniors taking third place as the sophomores wrapped up the float contest. For the second year in a row the Art Club took the first place ribbon for the clubs division. Clockwise starting from upper left. Pricilla Bai-Ion and Eddie Fritz, who were chosen king and queen, ride on the winning float by the seniors. Rolling Down Memory Lane Frank Guzman and Francine Yazzie have been selected as the 1982 Alefeorking and queen. Each year the yearbook staff tries to seek out a senior boy and girl who have given exceptional service to both the sen ior class and to Winslow High School but have received too little recognition for their efforts. Both Frank and Francine qualify on all counts and the Meteor staff is both pleased and proud to have them as the yearbook royalty. We would like to express our thanks to them publicly, for it is such peo pie who make WHS the great school that it is. 14 The Band Marches On Winslow High School Marching Band for 1981-82 had a very good year. They worked very hard to prepare for their half time shows, even though they had to work, under the handicap of having no uniforms. After waiting many months, the band finally received its new uniforms in time for the annual Christmas parade, where band members added to the excitement by showing off the new uniforms. In addition to the half time shows at the football games, the band also played for our pep assemblies as shown at the top left. Top right shows Potoula Kretsedemas ready to play her snare for the Christmas parade. Middle left is Mr. Haub. the band director. Jim Alexander drum major and Diane Natseway, twirler. The beginning chorus members (bottom) are studying hard to be part of the ensemble or advanced chorus next year. 22 1981-82—A successful year for the WHS orchestra and director. Mr. Jack Martin. Members of the orchestra practiced long hard hours, and many of them have studied years to develop this talent. The results of this practice and dedication were never more apparent than they were at the 1981 Christmas concert. Strings And Things Concentration Is The Game The Chess Club represents our school at many tournaments in the North. Some of the tourna ments the attended were at Coconino. Holbrook, and Page. They practiced almost every afternoon to get ready for divisionals and state. The team divisional were held in Flagstaff and the individual divisionals were held in Winslow. American Indian Day was declared on Friday. September 25th. and everyone was urged to wear something Indian made. There were also arts and crafts on display. That night, at halftime of the football game, some elementary school dancers performed for the crowd. The club also sponsored a pow wow which was held in the Spring, and with the help of the Title IV program, they had a meet the pros day and a meet the leaders day. On meet the-pros day. the members met with some Indian professionals who have their own businesses. And on meet the leaders day they met with leaders of different tribes. They had lunch together and talked about what was going to be done in the future for their tribes. Lloyd Nelson and Stephanie Whitman were elected as the clubs prince and princess. They rode on a car in the homecoming and Christmas pa rades. 25 Key Club Had A Busy Year Key club has done many service projects throughout the year Some were serving at the Kiwants Break fast on Oct. 3. painting the senior citizens center, helping a family move into their home and cleaning up after the air show at Winslow Airport The club will be going to convention May 7. 8. 9. and all members are eligible to attend. As the producers of the 1981-82 Bulldog Barks. this year's staff had the tedious task of investigating. interviewing, and writing on any and every newsworthy happening. Although the pictures on this page may indicate otherwise, putting out a newspaper once a month is a very tiring event; just ask Mr. Gary Watts, this year's advisor. 30 W-Club Supports More Than Sports Above, members of the 196282 Letterman's Club are. from row. This year was no exception as the club loaned $200 00 to the Science Club to help pay for a computer The club raised its money, as usual, by popping and selling popcorn. 31 Student Council Very Active This years Student Council was very active. They went to a convention at Palo Verde High School and planned the Home coming Parade. They also broke the record in the Christmas canned food drive. Student Council members also sold carnations on friendship Day and Valentines Day and held the annual student elections at the end of the year. The play. Washington Never Slept Here, was interesting, funny, and well presented. For a special matinee, the play was taken to Joseph City, where it was presented for the Joseph City School. Coach Nasser finally de cided on quarterback Kevin Ramsey to replace the injured Felix Guerrero. This proved to be the glue needed by the faltering Bulldogs as they went on to win five of the final six games The highlight of a season full of ups and downs had to be the thrilling 15 14 upset of the state playoff bound Flagstaff Ea gles. After spotting the Eagles to a first half lead of 14 0. the Bulldogs came back with 14 points of their own in second half, forcing the game into an Arizona playoff In the playoff, the Bulldogs placed the single blemish on the record of the state champions and everyone on both sides knew who the best team was that night. The boys' varsity basketball team had a fairly good season this year. After playing a tough Coconino Panther team in the semi-finals at divisional, the Bulldogs had a record of 14-9. Coach Bratt stated that their win over Coconino was their biggest win of their season be cause it gave them a chance to go to state. He also stated that his team was like a roller coaster. sometimes they played well and sometimes they didn't do so great. Coach feels that the Bulldogs have a good chance at state. Although the girls had to practice the same long weeks and hours as the other teams, they had only eight games on the schedule, about half what the other teams played. In spite of this disadvantage, the girls learned and played well, accord ing to coach Ken Salas. With just two games left on the schedule, the girls were sporting a record of four wins against only two losses. So. it seems, the Bull dog varsity and JV teams can look forward to excellent help in the next three years from the class of 1985. Frosh Boys Learn Winning Ways The Freshman boys basketball team had a fairly good season this year. With only 5 games remaining in their season, their record was 94. They averaged about 60 points a game, holding their opponents to about 48 points per game. Well, the staff and I made it. With the finished product now in your hands you may be saying, Another year, another yearbook. If so. you are wrong on both counts. The 1982 Meteor, just as the school year of 1982, will come around only once. Though the year passed rather quickly, the staff and I sincerely hope that the attempt we made to capture it in pictures and print is one that will be pleasing to you for years to come. I would like to express my deepest thanks to all of the photographers and my staff for their total cooperation. I would also like to thank Mr. Watts, our advisor, and congratulate him on surviving his first year. I wish the best of luck to next year's staff. 160 Charles Wilhoite, Editor JV Baseball Improves Record Top Row: Left to Right. Mark Wood. Jeff Hancock. Brian Hancock. Coach Henling, Darren Venoy.
