Staters know what it takes This year's starters know what it takes to run a government. Doug Conatser, Joe Karam, Tom Harris. and Nick Kretsedemas attended Boys State this summer from June 1-8 at NAU. Among the guest speakers were Governor Bruce Babbitt and Flagstaff Mayor Paul Babbitt. The organizations that sponsored the young men were Kiwanis, Rotary, and Elks. To get anywhere in government, you should know about parliamentary procedures, commented Joe. The two delegates that attended Girls State, which was held at U of A from June 11-18, were Martha Hernandez and Darnell Scott. They were both exposed to the different pects of government life. Darnell -aid she had a lot of fun and learned much about government life, while on the other hand, Martha said. It was a neat experience and I'd like to do it again sometime. 8 Homecoming 1980 The excitement of the 1980 Homecoming, One in a million, came to its peak when Amy Hayduko-vich and Wayne Garner were crowned Homecoming Queen and King. Kim O'Haco, Tommy Hardy, Dee Dee Williams. Mark Stewart, Tony Lomeli, Tambra Sluga, David Hanson and Lisa Hatch served as attendents to the king and queen. Strike up the band 12 The WHS Marching Band has been kept active throughout the year playing in concerts and helping to keep the spirit alive at such events as football and basketball games. They also participated in the Homecoming parade and were one ofxfive bands invited to attend NAU's homecoming, which was a great honor because they were selected on the basis of how well they play. The band consisted of 72 members and was under new direction this year by Mr. Ronald Bowen. This year's drum major and majorette were Jim Alexander and Tina Bell, LaWana Fulton was the returning twirler. Along with the Meteorettes, these bandleaders helped keep halftime activities enjoyable throughout the year. Pep come on now, pep a little C h«is Gon .ilt ■ff WHS spirit is shown here expressed in many different ways. From cheerleaders to matmaids to the pep hand, the school spirit it increased greatly over the past years. It is this spirit that boosted the teams to their victorious ways. The classes competed with each other as to who had the most spirit. The seniors won the contest and were given spirit fingers as a prize. The Meteor, the Bulldog Barks, the Winslow Mail, would be so lifeless without pictures. These people, the 1981 WHS photographers, have dedicated many hours into bringing the Winslow publications alive with the talented art of pictures. While most enjoy pep rallies, assemblies, and club activities, so do these photographers, but from behind the lens of a camera. im Irwin We write the perfect story The Bulldog Barks journalism staff was guided by Dwayne Cassidy and Corrine Rodriguez who served as the editors for the first and second semester respectively. The business manager was Debra Harms. The staff members attended the state convention of the Arizona Interscholastic Press Association in Chandler, Arizona, during October. They attended workshops conducted by professionals from the world of publishing arts. Janet Pavatea who had charge of the financing, studies a layout with Lisa Kcnna, upper right; list Smith. The most terrifying monsters that the staff of the Meteor had to face were the ferocious deadlines that kept galloping over the horizon. The staff put up a terrific fight, and although some of the deadlines won the battle, the staff won the war. In the Meteor the staff has tried to cover all important events and capture the spirit of 1980-81 so that the owners of these books will always be able to recall the experiences they had while attending Winslow High School. Corrine, Joe, Greg and Martha attended the fall convention of the Arizona Interscholastic Press Association where they gathered new ideas for the book and met old friends. This year the staff plans to have an index which will be part of the summer supplement. Ten members made the 1981 staff one of the largest for many years, and a transfer student, Carole Jackson, a sophomore member which was unusual as students have to be juniors and seniors to enroll in the class. AFS get new start r There was a new addition to our line of clubs this year called AFS (American Field Service). AFS was designed to motivate students to learn about international relations and different cultures throughout the world. The club was busy raising money to help finance exchange students to and from WHS. Although AFS is a new club, the membership this year was very successful. Members of the club are (clockwise from top) Mary Shumway. Chris Gonzales, Brenda Kincaid, Gu-dule Geelen, president. Miss Terry, sponsor, Er-malinda Yazzie, Karen Scott, Angel Cruz, Sera-phine Lee, Janet Pavatea, secretary, Barbara Clubbs, Darnell Scott, vice president, Stephanie Whitman, historian, and Lois Reynosa, treasurer, (not pictured) 1981 METEOR DEDICATEE We, The Meteor Staff, are proud to dedicate the 1980-81 yearbook to its very own advisor, Mrs. Frances Roberts. Although we picked her for the dedicatee, she had no knowledge of her being the one that was chosen. Mrs. Roberts has received her Master of Arts Degree in 1976 and majored in English. Playing the guitar and singing folk songs, are just a few of the many talents she has hidden. She has taught at WHS for 10 years and is retiring at the end of this school year. She has two children, her husband Clarence, and is a member of the Planing Zoning Committee. As a teenager. Mrs. Roberts once rode a horse from Williams, Arizona, all the way to Camp Verde, Arizona. After her retirement, she and her husband are moving to Alburquerque, New Mexico. We, the staff, which to express our appreciation for all she has done for the Bulldog Barks, the yearbook, and for our school. P.S. We fooled you Mrs. Roberts, didn't we! Sly aren't we? 31 Chess pros take their time All of Chess Club's varsity team were returning members from last year. They were, in order of their seats, Steve Martinez, Greg Vance, Ed Kenna, Mike Kirby and Alex Ray. Last spring a state qualification tournament was held in Winslow. Steve qualified to go to state in that meet. This year's team did quite well in tournaments. 32 Many We raised money by having Indian taco and other bake sales, stated Seraphine Lee. The money raised was for sponsoring trips to learn more interesting things about the Indian cultures. The keep club began with the election of officers who were Seraphine Lee, chosen as president, and Debbie Secakuku who held the office of vice president. Lois Reynosa and Angel Cruz held the offices of busy secretary and treasurer. Lois Reynosa and Marvin Etsitty were chosen as prince and princess who rode in the Many Feathers float during the Christmas parade. Feathers Royalty can do it right The classes gathered $1349.26 worth of canned goods in support of their candidates for Christmas Royalty. Juniors Myla Astorga and Eddie Fritz were crowned queen and king with their class bringing in $480.48 worth of canned goods; seniors came in second with $347.81; sophomores came in third with $319.64, while the freshmen brought in $201.35. The canned goods was used for the Elks Club Christmas baskets for the needy. The year there was no snow Ski Club had no problems with slippery icey roads or frostbite; in fact the biggest problem they faced was the lack of snow. Snow, the one thing many dread, was what these people hoped for. Some of the ski buffs were discouraged with a record low of snow, but attempted a few outings anyway. The season was cut even shorter when slopes at the Snow Bowl and Sunrise closed down in early March putting an end to the skiers nightmare of scratched and dulling skies. Even though the ski resorts have the capability of making man made snow they were still unable to compensate for the unseasonably warm temperatures. Through the coldest parts of the winter the resorts were not able to run at full capacity with only a few lifts operable. Ski Club members pictured above are Mark Lopez. George Ngai. The actors showed their appreciation by giving Mr. Robert Howell a token of their gratitude. The Mjgic Touch touched home with many of its viewers by showing some of the problems which occur in society today. He was in W-Club and Honor Society during his senior year. He also was very supportive of his class projects such as decorating floats and helping at the concession stand. Because he was very active and did a lot to win the Bulldogs honors, the staff proudly elected Henry Marquez as 1980-81 Annual King. 108 Effie Ruth Tawahongva was in Indian Club and chorus during her senior year in high school. She had been a member of Art Club her junior year. She worked on decorating floats and in concession stands for her class throughout her years at WHS. Effie lived at the dormitory and was said to be very helpful and always around when needed. Because she was helpful and active, the staff of the Meteor proudly elected Effie Tawahongva as 1980-81 Annual Queen. Willingness, Helpfulness and Service win title for Effie. In bigger meets, such as the Mingus, Peaks, and Winslow Invita-tionals, Winslow placed third, fourth, and sixth, respectively. The best meet all season was the Thunderbird Invitational in Phoenix. Winslow placed 8th out of the 46 schools which attended the meet. At the division meet in Tuba City, WHS team placed 3rd, which didn't qualify them for the state meet. The season's total showed the boys didn't do too bad, winning a total of 85 times and losing only 26. They placed third at the Holbrook Christmas Invitational losing to a fired-up team from Alchesay. Named to the Honorable Mention All-Tournament team were Charles Wilhoite and Steven Shirley. The Bulldogs went to the District tournament with a 9-12 record which placed them in a tough Spot having to play Coconino who was ranked No. 2 in the North. The guys ended their season with a 9-13 record and will lose only two starting seniors next season. Coach Bratt stated that they are looking forward to a great season next year, with some great returning ball players. 132 C its The girls varsity basketball team started out slow being defeated by Corona Del Sol in their first game of the season, 31-50. The girls went on to capture a 7-1 conference record and their third consecutive Divisional Championship. They took a home court advantage in the first round of the State Play-offs, overwhelming a tall Dysart team, 47-32.
