Arizona The annual staff wishes to dedicate the 1979 Meteor to Mrs. Jill Zeiger in appreciation for the long hours she has spent with the students. Mrs. Zeiger started teaching at W.H.S. in 1975. During her five years here she has taught American Government and has also sponsored the Me-teorettes. The two colleges which she attended to receive her teacher's certificate are Northeastern State University in Tahlequah. Oklahoma, and Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. Mrs. Zeiger is also the mother of three children and is married to Mr. Eric L. Zeiger. We. the staff of the Meteor, would like to acknowledge the inspiration given to the students of Winslow High School by Mrs. Zeiger. whose friendly personality has made her a teacher to be remembered. 2 ANNUAL ROYALTY Cindy Whipple was chosen as Yearbook Queen for her hard work during her high school years. Cindy has dedicated her time to the school as a participant in Solo and Ensemble Festival, the operetta H.M.S. Pinafore.” the choir, and as an accompanist for several soloists. Clinton Wilkins. Yearbook King, has done a great deal of work for the school as a football and basketball manager. Clinton has been a member of Honor Society, track, journalism. F.B.L.A.. and W Club. Clinton has served as treasurer of Key Club and president of Quill and Scroll. - 3 WHS 50th YEAR The present Winslow High School, RIGHT, was built in 1928-29. The original top floor, as seen in the 1929 photo at BOTTOM, was destroyed in the disastrous fire on August 28. 1960, MIDDLE RIGHT. The top floor was rebuilt, MIDDLE LEFT, and the decorations around the top of the building were sacrificed. THE FIRST WHS The Wilson building, TOP, was the original high school, built with only two floors. The third floor was added in 1913 14, MIDDLE. The top floor was removed in later years after having been condemned. The Wilson Building was razed in 1975. The first high school gym was constructed in 1949-50. LEFT. Mrs. Roberts, advisor. Dawn Smith. Rhonda Weather-svax. and Laura Shurley; front. Nancy Clubbs. Greg Kreie. Brenda Howell, and Antoinette Saufkie. Staff on the job. WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS The Winslow Fightin' Bulldogs had good reason to develop big heads because both the girls and boys varsity basketball teams successfully captured the AA state championship this year. This is the first year the girls have taken the state title, defeating the Gilbert team 58-54 in a very close game. The boys, for the first time in 15 years, beat their opponent. Corona del Sol. with a score of 70-64 to become the state champions. The basket-ballteams were not our only state champions this year. Craig Freeman took the state wrestling championship in his weight class for the second consecutive year. Jr. Prom Co-Chairman 3 The class of '79 started out great by taking first place in the Homecoming float contest. The class Christmas Royalty candidates were Lisa McDonald and Arthur Chavez, who came in second after running a close race with the juniors. In the Faculty-Senior basketball game, which was held in December, the seniors defeated the faculty squad with a score of 75-71. Also, by the beginning of the second semester the seniors had raised nearly $2,000 to meet the year's expenses. Our photographer was fortunate to catch these freshman gymnasts displaying their talents. 32 DONKEY BASKETBALL On January 25th. the members of the Winslow High School faculty played their traditional donkey basketball game against the junior high faculty. SOPHOMORGS 1978 FLOOD On December 19. 1978. the Little Colorado River jumped its banks and flooded Winslow Plaza. Ames Acres, and Bushman Acres, damaging many homes and causing people to evacuate. This was the worst flood in most people s memories and Joey Gonzales, who lives in Bushman Acres on French Road, took these pictures while rescue workers were using boats and rescuing livestock. On their entering the Homecoming Parade they proceeded for the first time in many years to win second place with their float. They included a bulldog on their float, which no other class did. Money earned by W Club goes for bettering the athletic programs of W.H.S. W Club also buys coaching and athletic magazines for the coaches at W.H.S. STATE RUNNER-UP '78-79 VOLLEYBALL VARSITY The varsity volleyball team had a 9-0 conference and a 19-3 overall record until an AIA rule violation caused the forfeit of the last five games. The Bulldogs had a fantastic season defeating Corona Del Sol 70 to 64 to win the AA State Championship. They also won the Miami Christmas tournament by defeating Miami in the finals 85 to 51. Their record for the year was 25 wins and 1 loss, the only loss coming from AAA Chaparral. This is also the second Consecutive year the Bulldogs have been AA North Conference champs. Claude Renfro was high point man by scoring 675 points and Randy Mead was second in total points scored by scoring 524. Claude was named Captain of the all-tournament team at state and Randy was also chosen for this team. Willie Powell was named the second team. They captured a third place finish in the Tuba City Christmas Tournament. They finished second at the Divisional Tournament and were declared the champs at the State tournament, defeating Globe 41-38 m the first round play. Flowing Wells 44-29 in the semi-finals, and Gilbert 58-54 in the championship game. They ended the season with a conference record of 10 wins and 0 losses and an overall record of 23 wins and 2 losses. The team took fourth place in the Doc Wright Tournament with a total of 111 points. Three of the wrestlers placed: Kenny Morse. 129 pounds, and Terry Chischillie. 122 pounds, both took third; Craig Freeman. 170 pounds, pinned his Holbrook opponent in three minutes and twelve seconds to win the title of Outstanding Wrestler. BOYS TRACK TAKES STATE AGAIN The boys track team had a great season winning the AA north divisionals and the state title. New school records were set by Warren Wilhoite. 440 yd. dash and long jump; Willie Powell, high jump; and in the 440 yd. relay and mile relay. Capturing individual state champion titles were Warren Wilhoite. Anthony Polk and Willie Powell. The 440 relay and mile relay teams also captured titles. GIRLS TRACK The girls track season was highlighted by the winning of the AA north division title. Through the season the girls captured three firsts, including the Winslow Invitational, and took numerous runner-ups in dual and three-way meets. Out of 28 schools at the state meet, the girls took sixth place. Anna Van. a junior, set a new school record of 25.0 in the 220-yard dash. Freshman Paula Owens set a record of 16.3 seconds in the 110-yard hurdles. COUNTERCLOCKWISE starting at upper left. HONORS Many students received awards for outstanding accomplishments at the annual Honors Assembly and the Elks Youth Banquet. Among those honored are. CLASS DAY The Class Day program was presented on May 17. CLOCKWISE from right: Bobbie Padilla and Jennifer Watts present Mr. Fritz with his award; Marlene Brown. Cathy Williams and Robert Greer sing the class song; Bretta Higdon and Debbie Tafoya read class prophecies; Gay Volk reads the class poem; Mr. Magallanez grins for the cameraman; and one of the class skits is performed. The theme for the 1979 graduation ceremony was Where You Come From Is Not Nearly So Important As Where You Are Going.” This year three people were valedictorians. Bill Fritz spoke first on The Morning of Our Lives; Nancy Clubbs followed with The Noontime of Our Lives: and James MacLean concluded with The Evening of Our Lives. Reverend Stan Gol-lery presented the invocation, address, and benediction to the 186 member class. GRADUATION MAY 18. 1979 TOO MUCH HEAVEN JUNIOR PROM The 1979 Junior Prom was held on April 21. in the Elks Auditorium, which was decorated in a rainbow of colors. The theme for the prom was Too Much Heaven. One major change was made in this year's prom: Instead of having a live band, the couples danced to the music of a disc jockey.
