She was on various committees for Student Council, including the intercom committee. Leellen, also known by friends as Super V, Muscar, Lou, and various other aliases, says, Stick with what you believe and don't let the crowd influence you. '77 Meteor Is Dedicated to Mr. Fritz Dahlen The annual staff chose Mr. Fritz Dahlen as the dedicatee of the '77 Meteor. Mr. Dahlen retired during spring, after 28 years of service to the Winslow Public School system. He was superintendent for the last six years. During that time, he did much to greatly improve the public schools, and in particular, the high school. Mr. Dahlen started teaching in Winslow at Roosevelt School in 1949. He was principal of the Indian dormitory, then called Emmons dormitory, for six months, when the dormitory was first built. He then filled the vacancy left by the principal of the Washington-Lincoln school. Afterwards, he became assistant superintendent under Ray Booth, and later, he moved up to superintendent. The staff wishes to recognize Mr. Dahlen for these and many other accomplishments. 4 GENE EDWARD HANCOCK Senior Class President; Football 1,2,3,4; Wrestling 2; Baseball 1; Basketball 1; Frosh. FROM THE MISTY PAST In the far corners of our minds all we have left are shadowy memories of all the events that happened on Class Day '77. The Seniors did a skit of a class reunion in 1987, in which they honored members of their J.V. basketball team. Diane Scheid presented the School Key to Don Summorsgill. The big day ended with the seniors rushing to their cars for water balloons. 34 CLASS DAY OF 1977 4 0 SENIOR BANQUET The theme for the senior banquet was The Way We Were ' and the guest speaker was Mr. Tom Whipple who reminisced about the way things were when he was in high school. The senior band members played for the occasion, Pat Aragon read the class poem, and Mary Berry and Elyse Greer sang the class song. 36 Bill Herron President Debbie DeAngelis Vice-President Barbara Iler Secretary Diana Tecklenburg T reasurer The class of '78 started the year by winning first place with their float in the Homecoming parade. The float had the goal posts connected by a rainbow and the Homecoming theme which was Today's The Day . They continued their winning streak by taking first place with their Christmas tree, and they won second place for their Miss Merry Christmas candidate. They lost out in the Christmas chain contest and came in fourth. Unlike previous years the juniors joined with seniors in putting on a play instead of each class giving their own play as had been done before in the past. This year was no exception. Slave week was filled with fun and laughter as owners dressed their slaves in costumes ranging from night gowns and curlers to leisure suits worn in the 17th century. Not to mention the makeup jobs done on the freshman faces. Also there was a contest every lunch hour in which owners could enter their slaves, and they were: the licorice race, the banana eating contest, the chalk v alk, the shaving cream race, and the traditional Peanut 500. Since there is an exception to every rule, this year lemons were used instead of peanuts. Shown Clockwise From Upper Left, Jerry Libsch displays his makeup job. It snowed all Thursday afternoon and evening, and by Friday morning there was about 10 inches of snow. Ironically the Saturday previous to this snow found students in shorts and swim suits basking in the heat. Soon after the snow melted the dreary winds began once again. Upon waking on Friday morning many felt that Winslow appeared as a fantasy and fairyland, a very cold fantasy at that. Trees were drooping to the ground from the weight of the snow and everything in sight was covered. The photographers were asked to take pictures of the snow and on this page are a few of the pictures they came up with. 71 Like all years 1976 - 1977 had its share of fads and fashion, those things that are considered in. On March 18 the Concert Choir earned a superior rating at the NAU Festival. To earn money for their tour on April 20 and 21, they sold tickets to the concerts and sold crocks of cheese. The Treble Choir also had six concerts and received a good rating at the IMAU Festival. The group progressed well, according to Mr. Slotterback the director of the group, because at the beginning of the year they had problems in singing even one part but in the end they did very well with songs that contained three parts. The Madrigal Choir is a selected choir that sings most of their songs acapella. This select group performed twice at the Falcon Restaurant besides singing at the regular concerts. They received an excellent rating at the NAU Festival. Mr. Floyd Slotterback directed all three choirs this year. Above, the Winslow High Treble Choir. Center, the Concert Choir practices. We hope that you enjoy it. No one but those on a yearbook staff knows how much time, energy, and hard work must go into a yearbook. I hope you can use this yearbook to remember the good times you had at WHS. I would like to thank the staff, the photographers, the artists, the advisors, and the people who bought advertising for all they did to help make this book possible. I would also like to thank you, the reader, for supporting the annual staff during this school year. And for the Mighty Class of 1977, I hope that every member can enjoy life and have a great future. 176
