STAFF 2 DEDICATION The 1976 Meteor is dedicated to Mr. Paul Summersgill. Mr. Summersgill received his Master of Arts from Eastern New Mexico University in 1957. He has served with the Arizona Interscholastic Association, and is at present the secretary of the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association. Mr. Summersgill has been a part of the W.H.S. faculty for seven years. Since he came the band has earned only excellent or superior ratings at the large group festivals, and a pep band has been formed. Mr. Summersgill has also helped with the musicals for the last five years. The 1975 musical, The Sound of Music, was one of his proudest accomplishments. -----AS 1 1 ANNUAL QUEEN The annual staff chose Terry Thomas and Jeanette (Gi GO Poolheco as the 1975-76 Annual King and Queen. They were given this honor because they were always willing to lend a hand in helping with the work involved in producing plays and financing club activities. They were always willing to do this without expecting fanfare or praise. They have shown spirit and enthusiasm through all four years of high school. This class will always enjoy this distinction which it will have to share with only the class of 1876 until the year 2076. Even these classes can't claim to be a bicentennial graduating class. This distinction belongs to those Seniors graduating this year. The class did very well in the football concession stand. This helped make a Senior Hop, Senior Banquet, and a Ditch Day at Big Surf possible. NORMAN COLBY BETONEY Football 1; Basketball 1,2, 3,4; Honor Society 4. The first Senior class to graduate had 4 students. When it was built the 1915 annual read: Winslow has a modern High School with 18 rooms, hot water heat, hot and cold water, electric lights, telephones, bubbling fountains, a bell system, and a piano. In 1929 the High School was built and students moved in in 1930. So the Wilson Building was abandoned. In 1956 the top story was removed from the Wilson Bldg., and it was used for four 6th grade classes. When it became necessary to use more room the high school once again began using the Wilson Bldg. At the end of the 1975 school year the Old Wilson Bldg. was torn down in order to have room for the new buildings. 28 THE NEW The Industrial Arts building was built where the basketball court, and part of the parking lot used to be; it contains the following classes: Mechanical Drawing, Auto Shop, Metal Shop, and Wood Shop. The Business Building is now in the place of the Old Wilson Building. It contains: Office Practice, Typing, Shorthand, and other business courses. CENTER TOP, the wrecking ball strikes the first heavy blow to the top of the Wilson Bldg. OPPOSITE PAGE, CENTER, students enjoy new facilities in Business Bldg., Completed in January. CENTER, moving more equipment into Industrial Arts Bldg. BOTTOM, Industrial Arts Bldg. o X SENIOR PLAY The Senior Play this year was BAREFOOT IN THE PARK. There were 6 parts in the play. These parts were played by Diane Carole Scheid as Corrie Bratter; Tony Ruiz as Paul Bratter; Kaye Hancock as Corrie's Mother, Mrs. Banks; Arthur D. Rubi, Jr. as Victor Velasco; Paul Shumway as the telephone repair man, and Steve Varner as Mr. Munshin. The following were on Stage and Construction Crev : Mary Berry, Steve Varner, Dorothea Thiele, Billy Thomack, Terry Thomas, Tammy Cockerham, Kay Taylor, Patti Sterr, Debbie Freeman, Jonie Matthews, Cathy Williams, Betty Jane Wyatt, Janna Douthitt, Georgia Foehner, Kevin Robinson, Randy Berry, Brenda Larry, Sonja Reffner, Barry Summers, and Fidel Lopez. The Make Up Crew was Diana Mathews, Mary McKay and Robin Conway. 30 SENIOR BANQUET The senior class banquet was really enjoyed by those attending. There were no long speeches to listen to and a Mexican combination plate to enjoy. Besides eating, Jerri Gonzales read the class poem and Kaye Hancock sang a song composed by herself. A few of the seniors really proved their worth when they had to help serve the dinner. 31 BOYS AND GIRLS STATE Carolyn Duggins and Kaye Hancock went to Girls State at U. of A. while Kevin Peters Marlin Scott, Frank Stacey, and Kevin Jestos attended Boys State at N.A.U. At Boys and Girls State you learn all about correct balloting procedures. In addition, the delegates learn about how to run a government on the city, county, and state levels. Everyone is divided into two parties. Elections were held on the state level with none of our delegates running. At the county level, however, Kevin Jestes won the position of Superintendent of Schools by a slim margin and Kaye Hancock being elected to the Board of Supervisors for her district. One difference between Boys and Girls State was in their naming of cities. Boys State had names like Fremont, Cooke, Layton, and O'Neil for their cities while at Girls State they had more creative names such as Yucca, Mesquite, Sycamore, and Manzanita. Their counties had such musical names as Cocopah and Supai. One really fun part of going to state is when the halls of the various cities are decorated to look like real highways. They have masking tape center lines, traffic signs, stop lights, and even fire hydrants. Failure to follow directions results in severe penalties, walking backwards for example. Kaye got the most out of this deal, her room was designated the local bar. 32 JUNIOR PLAY The junior play, Pure as the Driven Snow, was a melodrama, or you could say it made fun of melodramas. For Instance, chimes that didn't ring, thunder that sounded when it should not, people getting hit in the face by accident, and so on. This play gave the audience a chance to participate by booing at the villain and cheering for the hero. Members of the cast were Purity Dean, Diane Schied; Leander Longfellow, Harold Soehner; Mrs. Logan, Mary Berry; Mr. Logan, Dudley McGonnagill; Mrs. Hewlitt, Cindy Wilhelm; Alison Hewlitt, Kay Taylor; Mortimer Frothingham, Tony Ruiz; Jed Lunn, Danny Owsley; Nellie Frothingham, Elyse Greer; Letty, Stanlene Curley; Faith Hogue, Cheri Stucker; E.Z. Pickens, Paul Shumway; Imogene Pickens, Leellen MacLean. Stage crew: Betty Jane Wyatt, Steve Varner, Goergia Foehner, Dorothea Theile, Tom Benham, Barb Monsegur, Kathy Connors, Lisa Frey, Mr. Chris Burt, and Miss Winncll Hillman, director. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS The juniors had an unusual year. They started off by placing 4th in the homecoming Parade. Their Miss Merry Christmas candidate, Patricia Aragon, placed 3rd in the Miss Merry Christmas Contest. The juniors had two money making projects to raise money for the Junior Prom; these were selling light bulbs, and selling candy at the concession stand at the games. They profited most from the candy selling. The Junior Prom theme, Laughter in the Rain, was voted on at a class meeting. The class officers from LEFT TO RIGHT are Harold Soehner, president; Lorraine Lucero, vice-president; Leellen MacLean, secretary; Cindy Darnell, treasurer; Darrell Bryson, Diane Nelson, and Mike Mead representatives. The sophomores of 1975-76 had a terrific start in their second year of high school when their class captured first place in the Homecoming parade with a float which presented the Liberty Bell. The class for the first time stuffed the napkins for their float from the inside to the outside which helped them get the beautiful effect for their first place float. For the Miss Merry Christmas contest the sophomore class took second place. The class brought in a total of $60.27 in canned goods for their candidate Vivian Gonzales. The Annual Tv irp Dance was also put on by the sophomores on March 20th. but changes were made about Mr. Ugly and Mrs. Ugly. This year they had a Mr. Nice Guy and a Miss Alright, along with the Twirp King and Queen. They were proud to have won second place with their float in the Homecoming parade. The freshman can be very pleased with their efforts on their float. Bretta Higdon, of the freshman class, had the honor of being Miss Merry Christmas for 1975, as well as riding on the Christmas parade float. We've been moving all year! 165 IN MEMORY On May 18, 1976, the students at the high school stood at the windows facing south watching the black smoke and flames from a fire that destroyed Acme Lumber Company and damaged Ross' Drug store. The picture at BOTTOM LEFT is what these students saw. Because of the support these businesses have always given the Meteor, it in turn would like to express the sorrow and concern felt for Ross' and Acme. The staff hopes that these businesses will soon be back in service. 166 KEEPSAKES Oh, the joy of memories, The joy of recollections! The joy of keepsakes and souvenirs That so hold our affections. A party invitation, A letter or a book, The memories of a shady lane Or a little babbling brook. A baby shoe or tiny curl. Such little things we treasure. Pictures, such dear reminders That give us so much pleasure. And each year they grow more precious. . These keepsakes that we hold. And we wouldn't part with either For all their weight in gold. --Florence H. Steelman I hope this annual will be one of your most treasured keepsakes. Many years from now, may it help you to remember the happy times at Winslow High School. I would like to thank the staff for the hours they have spent in making this yearbook. I also want to thank the photographers whose help was vital in producing this book.
