Under the direction of Mr. Ron Harris, Speech and Drama participants made quite a name for themselves last year. Persistence, patience, and practice earned members of this group a first place at the Page speech tournament and a first place in the district competition at Lake Havasu City. Members entered such events as serious and humorous prose, debate, poetry, and dramatic interpretation. Eight students represented Winslow High School at the state speech finals in Tucson. They were Mary Cahill, Beverlee Stucker, Laura Fore, Marcus Warren, Becky Herlacher, Joe Hasten, Art Rubi, and Mike Penrod. Pictured Below are six of the students who went to state. W CLUB M.A.S.O. W Club is an organization for WHS lettermen. The sponsors for the 1973-74 year were Mr. C. Hysong and Mr. Artie Griffith. The year's goal was to earn money to go towards the construction of an industrial arts building near the campus. Funds were obtained from the sale of raffle tickets and candy. Time will tell whether the attempt is successful or not. The members in the picture BELOW are (Front Row, L-R) Jeff Weatherton, Dennis Peters, Virgil Cruz, Ed Grayson, Club President Wayne Taylor, Kenny Wetzl, Dwain Smith, (Row 2) Mr. Hysong, Selwyn Namoki, Frederick Myron, Calvin Clark, Alvin Thompson, Gilbert Keyonnie, Andy Knight, Bruce Freeinan, Mr. Griffith, (Row 3) Gale Soehner, Dewey Jackson, Ken Conatser, Walt Greer, Cary Gamer, John Davis, Gary Wilhelm, (Row 4) Mike Day, Chuck Murray, Danny Durkin, Pato Lomeli, Mike MacLean, Seig Ezell, Manuel Ruiz, and representative Chuck Stratton. The Mexican-American Club is one of the newest organizations on the WHS campus. Mr. Jake Magallanez, a new teacher, introduced it. As club projects, M.A.S O. entered a car in the Homecoming parade and placed fourth. The club also sponsored a turkey raffle and a Mexican-style dance which was very successful. ABOVE are 16 of the almost 30 students in the club. The organization's president was Frances Gonzales, and Sandra Lopez was student council representative.

CHESS CLUB Chess Club was one of three new organizations at WHS during 1973-74. The purpose of this organization is to instill interest in and promote appreciation of the game. The sponsor was Mr. Joe Gonzales. Officers elected in mid-October were Theron Freeman, president; Steve DeAngelis vice-president; Kenneth Ekstrom, secretary; and Don Perry, treasurer. Rex Shumway was elected president at semester. The organization is composed of varsity and junior varsity squads, and matches were held within the Club and with nearby schools. Members at Right are (Front Row) Rex Shumway, Perry Rickard, Donald Perry, Frank Jue, Steve DeAngelis, (Back Row) Dudley McGonagill, Paul Shumway, Mike Falling, and Mark Bradley. REACH-OUT During 1973-74 Reach-Out sponsored a Head-Start Christmas party, which was open to any student who wished to participate, had Recreation Night, and held a successful Evening of Christian Drama, a trilogy of religious plays. This was a new activitiy during the year. The organization met on Wednesdays; guest speakers attended the meetings as an added interest. Reach-Out is a non-denominational organization for students interested in bettering themselves and their communities through Christian endeavors. Officers for 1973-74 were Elaine Douthitt, president; Buddy West, vice-president; Sandi Linder, secretary-treasurer; and Ken Ekstrom, Student Council representative. Mr. Ron Harris served as sponsor and helped select and produce the trilogy of Christian drama. At Right members of Reach-out have their annual election of officers for the coming year.
