STUDENT COUNCIL Andy Kenneth Mari Mary K. Knight Conatser Faucher Coughlin Student Council is not a club with open membership; it is an organization comprised of Student Body executives, class representatives, and representatives from each club in school. During 1973-74 the organization sponsored a state TRAGYC program in Winslow, held a vehicle inspection clinic, and conducted Tot Town, a child-sized city designed to teach small children traffic safety rules. Mary Durkin, senior, was one student from WHS who represented us at the State Convention in Tuscon; she served as state secretary. Student Council also participated in a student exchange with nearby schools Flagstaff, Holbrook, and Show Low. Some students who participated in the exchanges were Steve De Angelis, Terry Rhoton, Carolyn Duggins, Mary K. Coughlin, and Diane Nelson. During April 1974 student body elections were held with a new twist: Student Council sponsor, Ms. Dixie Dougherty, required that the elections be held with all the formalities of a state or national election. This practice, ignored in past years, should revive interest in selecting Student Council executives. The organization sponsored its annual activities— leading Freshman Orientation Week, planning a calendar of activities for the student body, holding dances, and stuffing tire candy machines. The major role of the WHS student government is to provide an effective link between the students and the administration of WHS.
