Marcia Wilhoite Julie Mallette Beverlee Stucker Becky McFarland Stacey Tiffin 5 ORCHESTRA Fall 1973 saw the Winslow High School string section of the symphony nearly double in size with an enrollment of 27 and a total membership in the symphony of 55. This rapidly growing orchestra opened its season with a major formal concert given in October—the earliest symphony performance in a school year. The orchestra also performed for the Music Department Cakewalk, the All-School Christmas program, and the Chamber Orchestra accompianied the Community Chorus production, How Far Is It To Bethlehem? The second semester included participation in the Regional Solo and Ensemble festival in Prescott on January 19, a second formal concert on February 14, hosting the Eastern New Mexico University Symphony Orchestra in concert on February 18, and attendance at at the Northeastern Arizona Music Educators' Festival held in Joseph City on March 22. In early April a two-day tour was culminated by attendance at the University of Arizona Music Festival. A musical titled Once Upon A Mattress was presented in conjunction with the drama and choral departments, and a final spring honors concert was held in late May. The 1973-74 Orchestra proved itself equal to the challenge of performances of such works as the Beethoven Symphony No. 1, Farandole by Bizet, and The Hero's Gate of Kiev by Moussourgsky. The conductor is Mr. Kim Thompson. Left: Orchestra members concentrate on sheet music and Mr. Thompson's arms. Above: Mr. Thompson in deep concentration. 6 MADRIGAL AND CONCERT CHOIRS The W. H. S. Chorus consists of two groups, a select chorus called Concert Choir, and Madrigal Choir, which consists of 12 singers and various soloists. Among the activities participated in during 1973-74 were the Chorus Variety Show, at which Holbrook's chorus was the invited guest, an all-school Christmas program (held in conjunction with the junior high and grade schools). Solo and Ensemble Festivals for district and state, and a spring musical, Once Upon A Mattress, which was presented in conjunction with the speech and drama departments and orchestra on May 9 and 10. During 1973-74 Concert Choir went to Grand Canyon and sang concerts at Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, and Ash Fork. This tour was held on April 25 and 26. Among selections performed were Morning is Broken, Elijah Rock, and They Call the Wind Maria. Students from Winslow who attended regional competition in Chorus were Arthur Rubi, Ross Frame, Mary Cahill, Mark Pfieffer, Buddy West, Carolyn Duggins, and Ken Conatser. All-State qualifiers were Cahill, West, and Conatser. Mr. William Arthur was director. 7 Winslow High School Band had another successful season under the direction of Mr. Paul Summcrsgill. The band carried on its traditional activities: the sale of personalized band calendars, marching in the Homecoming, Christmas, and other parades, and interscholastic competitions for high ratings at Prescott and Mesa where All-State was held. At semester, the band was split into two sections: Symphonic and Concert. This was because there were too many students in the original sections. Band officers for the 1973-74 year were Mary K. Coughlin, president, Elaine Douthitt, vice-president, Angela Stotts, secretary, Annette Beaty, treasurer, and Bobby Estudillo was Student Council representative. The drum major for the 1973-74 season was Senior Marcus Warren, and the majorettes were JoAnne Campbell, Janet Heflin, and Stephanie Ceballos. 8 In lower LEFT comer of page 8, the brass section of WHS Band. Knight Conatser Faucher Coughlin Student Council is not a club with open membership; it is an organization comprised of Student Body executives, class representatives, and representatives from each club in school. During 1973-74 the organization sponsored a state TRAGYC program in Winslow, held a vehicle inspection clinic, and conducted Tot Town, a child-sized city designed to teach small children traffic safety rules. Mary Durkin, senior, was one student from WHS who represented us at the State Convention in Tuscon; she served as state secretary. Student Council also participated in a student exchange with nearby schools Flagstaff, Holbrook, and Show Low. Some students who participated in the exchanges were Steve De Angelis, Terry Rhoton, Carolyn Duggins, Mary K. Coughlin, and Diane Nelson. During April 1974 student body elections were held with a new twist: Student Council sponsor, Ms. Dixie Dougherty, required that the elections be held with all the formalities of a state or national election. This practice, ignored in past years, should revive interest in selecting Student Council executives. The organization sponsored its annual activities— leading Freshman Orientation Week, planning a calendar of activities for the student body, holding dances, and stuffing tire candy machines. The major role of the WHS student government is to provide an effective link between the students and the administration of WHS. Tryouts are held every spring and certain requirements are set that have to be passed for a girl to be eligible. One requirment is a girl must make her own routine on pom pons and a novelty. To promote more spirit then ever they had the band march around the school calling the students out for rallies. These short pep sessions proved to be a great success. Last year's performers chose for a change, to perform to old time favorite songs rather than modern day music. With the help of their sponsor, MissJoan Lancaster, the girls contributed a great deal to the Bulldog spirit. They made up all of their routines and worked hard to put on a good performance for the student body. Meteroettes form traditional W . MASCOTS The mascots have promoted a great deal of school spirit during the past year. They are an extension of the cheerleading squad, an active branch of the Pep Squad, and strong supporters of WHS. Varsity Cheerleaders are shown forming a pyramid which shows grace and beauty. Getting involved is part of the cheerleaders job as shown here during Freshmen Orientation. JV CHEERLEADERS Junior Varsity Cheerleaders are elected by the student body of WHS the same time the Varsity Cheerleaders are elected. They must have met the same qualification as the Varsity Cheerleaders. Only four girls are elected, however, and their duties are to lead cheers and raise spirit at the JV games. The Junior Varsity Cheerleaders work hard and hope that they will eventually become Varsity Cheerleaders. The Freshmen Cheerleaders are chosen in an election held by the junior high student body in the spring. They then serve throughout their freshman year in WHS. They present their cheers and a routine that they made up by themselves. From their routines, they exhibit some gymnastic feats such as tumbles, splits, and perhaps, cartwheels. Susan Keller, Polly Cain, and Valerie Wilhoite attended a week-long session in Tucson, and Dewey Jackson, Jerome Moore, Mike MacLean, and Gale Soehner attended a session held in Flagstaff from June 11 to June 17. The Boy and Girl State programs are studies in the workings of American Government and the two-party system. A major portion of the workshops dealt with the way elections on the local, district, and state level are run, speechmaking, and political campaigning. WHS State participants won offices on all levels. Guest speakers attended the programs to lecture on various phases of government. Among the speakers were Governor Jack Williams at Boys' State, and Secretary of State Wesley Bolin at Girls' State. The 1973 team once again exhibited the never quit attitude of WHS as they continually came from behind to victory. Several mid-season injuries hurt the Bulldogs in their efforts to win the conference championship. Joe Zukowski, team quarterback, was injured during the Coolidge game, and Sigfried Ezell and Loren Yazzi were injured during the Coconino game. All three were out for the rest of the season. Tommy Thompson and Steven Kearns were unfortunate as they were unable to finish the football season due to injuries. Tommy was injured during the Coconino game and Steven was injured at the very start of the season and was unable to play throughout the entire season. Many of the Junior Varsity members are moving up to Varsity level, but a fine season can still be expected from the mighty Bulldogs since many tough Freshmen football players are moving up to the Junior Varsity team. Out of the total of 19 games played, the tough young Bulldogs won 15 games and lost only 4. The entire Junior Varsity squad helped to compile the season record since throughout the entire season an average of 12 boys played per game. Coach Petronovich feels this should give valuable playing experience to many of these players. Towards the end of the season, 3 outstanding players, Kevin Thompson, Robert Oliva, John Davis, were moved up to Varsity level. Many of the players are also expected to move up to Varsity level next year. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL Although the Freshman Basketball team won only 7 games and lost 12, Coach John Fink was proud of the way 21 young Bulldogs turned out for the entire season. Coach Fink feels that not only have they become better players but have also learned responsibility and the ability to stay with something once they have started. Coach Fink listed Fred Campbell, John Land, Jamey Jones, and Mont Gamer as the four top scorers and Len Surrell, Scott McCormick, Ronnie Colbath, and DarTell Bryson as the top rebounders. In wrestling for instance, the members worked hard to better themselves and to become members of the varsity team. Even though some of them didn't make it, they still used their teamwork to win their matches. This year's Junior Varsity Wrestling record was six wins, and two losses. Next year, most of these young men will probably be seen grappling on the Varsity squad. 58 Freshmen teams are probably the most ignored, yet the most important teams in the school, since they are the future varsity teams. In the first meet of the season, the Bulldogs just barely outran Williams for their first victory. Soon after that meet, the Regional Track Meet was held in Flagstaff. Although the team only placed 6th, great potential and determination were exhibited by the women. In the last meet of the season, the Seligman Invitational, the girls again put on a good show, but only managed to place third behind Salome and Wickenburg. Ann and Jane Taylor 1973 - 1974 JUNIOR CLASS This year started off really great for the members of the class if '75. Their first accomplishment came with the homecoming float. The class used an old fashioned ice cream parlor suitably called The Pop Shop, which placed second in the Homecoming Parade. The next accomplishment was when Pauline Padilla won the title of Miss Merry Christmas. Other memorable events included recycling aluminum cans, selling cookbooks, working the concession stand at the basketball games and wrestling matches, putting on the Junior play, I Remember Mama, engineering the Junior Prom and of course making the halls ring with excitement as they exhibited their class rings. For the year of 1973-74 the following served as officers: President, Steve DcAngclis; vice-president, Teresa Guzman; secretary, Gina Jenkins; treasurer, Hazel Perry and representatives Danny Durkin, Judy Kalisz, and Annette Beaty. Next year they will enter the halls with a new outlook because the members of the class of '75 will be the ruling class. Class officers were President Terry Rhoton, Vice President Wayne Taylor, Secretary Heather Morris, Treasurer Suzie Hancock, and Representatives Laura Bertino, Mike McLean, and Elaine Douthitt. Many things were accomplished by the class, one of which was the successful concession stand, which raised approximately $1,600 to finance ditch day, class day, senior banquet and other activities. One of tbe main activities was the building of the Homecoming float, which took fifth place out of only four places. The Senior Class play was Flowers for Algernon , with seniors having first choice of parts and sponsored by Mr. Ron Harris. The profit from this play was approximately $250.00, which was a little less than usual. The senior candidate for Miss Merry Christmas was Elaine Douthitt. This is a contest for collecting cans of food to be distributed by the Elk's club to needy people. The class came in second place, raising $208. 91. The senior class sponsors were Miss Dubuy, Miss Lancaster, Mr. Henling, Mr. Conatser, Mr. Cassidy, Mr. McArthur, Mr. Boles, Mrs. Roberts, and last but not least, Mrs. McAuley. The senior class will be remembered by the great sign that was painted on the three wrater tanks at the city pool. SCOTT MORTUARY Your Church Is Your Strength Attend the Church of Your Choice How did you say to get on? 156 158 IN MEMORY OF MR. AFTON SAWYER The students of Winslow High School were saddened when the news came of Mr. Afton Sawyer's death, which occurred in November of 1973. Mr. Sawyer was one of our maintenance men that had been at WHS for 12 years. He was a very conscientious man and one that did his job well. Always an extremely quiet man, it was difficult for the students to get to know him as well as we would have liked to. He worked with five other men in the maintenance building, one of which is his son Leroy Sawyer. His devotion to his work was well known by these men and many others. We will miss Mr. Sawyer and his quiet ways. 159 And, departing, leave behind us Footprints in the sands of time- Longfellow I hope you like your annual. The staff spent many hours making it as original and different as possible. I also want to thank the photographers for the hours they put in taking pictures, developing and printing.
