If we are ever to live in a world which is united and peaceful, we must unite all the peoples in the world, or be destroyed. Winslow High School is only a very small portion of the world, but we are part of the make up of mankind. We as citizens of these United States, must begin the strive for unity by working together. THE TIME IS NOW. 1972 ANNUAL DEDICATEE Mr. Nasser was a graduate of Miami High School in Miami, Arizona in 1939. He attended college at ASC in Flagstaff, Majoring in physical education. Upon graduation, he went into the service. In 1947, Mr. Nasser came to Winslow as the rookie coach of WHS. During the past twenty-five years, this teacher has given outstanding service to the school and his community. His football record includes 5 Northern Conference Championships, 1 State Championship, and twice second in the State; this includes an over-all record of 161 wins, 61 losses, and 4 ties. Besides being the BEST football coach, he has also coached track and basketball. HOMECOMING 71 HOMECOMING QUEEN AND KING CYDNEY MCLAWS TOMMY MARTINEZ It was a very Good Year... This was the theme of Homecoming 1971. Reigning over all the gay festivities were Cydney Me Laws and Tommy Martinez, our homecoming queen and king. Homecoming dedicatee this year was Mr. Stotts, honored for his fine assistance in coaching and for his teaching. On the afternoon of October 15, 1971, the homecoming parade was started off with the W.H.S. Band leading the way. The winning float of the parade was the Sopliomore's which was a baby carriage, depicting the year 1956, the year in which they were bom. Other floats also in the parade were the Freshmen, Junior, Senior, D.E.C.A., and Reach-Out. The highlight of the evening was the 16-8 football victory over the Kingman Bulldogs. That night, the music of the Exotic Blues set the mood for a victory dance—the perfect ending to the perfect day. “IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR” The royalty and attendants; from left to right: Clydel Atkins, Rosemary Ewan, Tony Hopper, Raylene Jenkins, Cydney McLaws; queen, Tommy Martinez; king, Lorene Nichols, Rob Neill, Janet Freeman, James Davis. 7 72 DITCH-DAY Elaine Peterson and Susie Peterson stand and shiver as Linda Keller demonstrates her splashing ability on Moreau Walter's arm. 8 Justin Mallette demonstrates his unique swimming ability. CLASS PLAY This year the Jr. class chose Up the Down Staircase , as the play for 1972. This play involves a school teacher's first experience in teaching. She finds the students to be somewhat insolent. The pupils have no intention of letting Miss Barrett enjoy her teaching. Although the students try their best to destroy Miss Barrett's will for teaching, she still struggles with them. Miss Barrett wins her battle with the students. The students become both learners and friends. 16 The class settling down. Teach Miss Barrett and Joe argue a point. Mr. McCabe reprimands the teacher and student. There is always great competition from the classes in the school. This year the freshman class collected the most cans, thus winning the competition. The class chose as their candidate Miss Judy Kalisz. Miss Kalisz is a very active member in her class. This contest is a favorite of all the students in the school as all of them seem to participate. This is and was a great activity to and for the students as a sort of recreational purpose. Many can goods were collected which go to the underpriviledged families in Winslow. MR. UGLY This year the meteorrettes of the Winslow High School again sponsored the annual Mr. Ugly contest. With all of the hard work and participation of the students, this event came out to be very successful. In the end it all paid off with the choosing of Lew Argctsingcr as the Mr. Ugly for the 1971-1972 school year. Lew was only one of the many competitors for this event which was exciting. Besides being the Mr. Ugly guy for this year, Lew is also very active in’ the athletic program of the school. For example; he's very active in football, basketball, and track. 20 Senior president Cydney McLaws hosted the Wayne Smith read a selection of poetry, banquet. 1972 SENIOR HOP BANQUET What was that cord again? SENIOR PLAY Allen watches intently while Dr. Marshall prepares himself as an Arab Shiek. Susan questions the Marshall's about marriage. Juveniles aren't always delinquents. says Dr. Marshall. Occasionally in the history of men, we find an individual who seems to have wholly dedicated his talent, and his energy, his entire life to Cod and His service. Such a man was Peter Marshall, whose story' we told in the Sr. Play. He was opposed by many people because he brought something different into traditional, sometimes stuffy religion. His wife suffered tuberculosis. He's suffered a severe heart attack, returning to full time ministry upon recovery. His dedication remained to the very end. Susan says, If you can wait just a few more months. CLASS - DAY Paula Cullum, Class Day Chairman, opens the 1972 assembly. Yes, we're the class of 72 As yet, the best by far. We're athletes, actors, actresses, Musicians, mechs on cars. We've won a lot of float contest. We worked till hands were swollen. Nothing but the best was used, Though most of it was stolen! We took the 'State' in Track this year; Gymnastics took it, too! But now we're leaving this behind, Next year it's up to you! So carry on and don't give up! You'll make it so don't doubt us. Just buckle down and try real hard To get along without us. 26 Jo Dee Roberts accompanies the High School Chorus. But as the year opened, the sophomores were given a better picture of life and what it has to offer. From the squeamish dissection of frogs (ich! !) to being able to drive a car for the first time, the class of 74 was given an added sense of maturity and responsibility. This year the sophomores were also kept busy by sponsoring Twirp Week, holding a dance after the basketball game, collecting can goods for the Miss Merry Christmas Candidate, as well as constructing a first place Homecoming float. All in all, the year turned out to be very productive and memorable for the class of 1974. These opportunities range from job investigation to competitive events. State and National conferences allow each student to compete with others in several areas related to the world of business. It also provides help for the needy. D.E.C.A. this year provided a Christmas Party for some of the more underprivcledged children of our community. This year the S-Club members participated in many activities. They served at the Kiwanis breakfast and at several athletic banquets. During Christmas they sacked candy, sang carols at Sambo's, and decorated the city Christmas tree. Among many other services, the members also collect money for the heart fund drive. 9] Miss Squires, sponsor of S-Club, teaches the meaning of service to the club members. The Science Club was organized in 1945 to not only stimulate a strong interest in the field of science but also to prepare students for future vocational goals. In striving for this aim, the sponsor, Mr. Dryden, and the club members have promoted interest in various science fields which include the computer, optical and physical sciences. These interests were further amplified by chib members participating in individual and group projects. These projects, along with interesting demonstrations, provided Science Club with a very informative and fun year. Mr. Dryden and David Scheid observe the path of a laser beam. G.A.A G.A.A. is an organization for all girls interested in sports. This year the emphasis is on tennis, track, and physical fitness, but a girl can work in any other sport that she finds particularly interesting. The girls can earn points by spending some of their free time hiking, bike riding, horseback riding, or at some other physical activity. If they earn enough points, they will receive a G.A.A. medal. The girls learn how to work together and they also learn the importance of being physically fit. Mary Benham, Cydney Me Laws, and Mrs. Clubbs discuss future plans for G.A.A. B.R.A. The Boy's (alias Men's) Rooting Association helped to boost school spirit by their active participation in rooting and yelling and screaming and stomping and crying and rejoycing at all the home basketball games, as well as equally outstanding performance at the home wrestling matches. To show pride in this usefull club, the members made special B.R.A. T-shirts to wear to the games and matches. When they were wom to the games, is was obvious that they were representative of the club. However, little old ladies, (and even tall young ladies) got quite a start when they saw one of the members wearing his shirt outside of the gym. There were comments such as: What does that young man have on his shirt? What is this generation coming to? The immorality of today's youth! All kidding aside, however, the B.R.A. was useful in raising school spirit. Their active participation during the '71-72 school year showed that there were, indeed, students who wished to support their athletic teams by rooting for them. Members pictured: (L. to R.) They performed many concerts, and went on tour in Phoenix. The tour proved very successful, and everyone involved had a great time. The band played at Payson, Marcos de Niza high school (Tempe), and Dysart. The calandar sales exceeded one-thousand dollars, all of which went to provide for the food and lodgings for the tour. But it would take the power output of more than 900 Hoover Dams to equal the energy flowing through the nation's natural gas pipelines each day. Over 797,000 miles of gas pipelines now crisscross the country. Which isn't surprising when you consider that more than 28,000,000 American families are heating with gas. Not to mention those who use it for cooling, cooking, water heating and clothes drying. Or the 26,000 ways in which 168,000 industrial plants are using it. More than a million new customers each year are turning to gas because it does these modern jobs more efficiently. More dependably. For less money. So who needs 900 Hoover Dams? Time seems to drag in every class except for the annual department. There will never be enough time to put all the happenings of one year down of paper. The little things that are just a part of the past are brought alive. Photographers are around every comer, taking those candid shots. The smiles, the laughters, the tears, all are presented in this book. The 1972 Meteor was put together for your enjoyment. I truly hope that it holds endless memories for you as it does for me. I hope the annual has captured the 1971-72 school year in the best way. As editor, I thank you for helping make the 1972 school year the best one ever. Janet Cribbs Editor 184
