We have decided to dedicate this year's Meteor to both men. One of this year's Dedicatees has been a faithful servant for the Winslow School System and the City of Winslow for many years. He came to Winslow in 1929, when he taught Plain Geometry in the high school for one year. He then became a science teacher for four years before becoming Assistant Principal and physics teacher. In 1935, he became Winslow High School's principal. In 1939, he became the Superintendent of Public Schools in Winslow. When World War II began, Mr. Ray Booth joined the Navy and served his country for three years. He received his BS Degree from Kansas State Teachers College in 1929, his Masters Degree from the University of Arizona in 1934, and attended USC for nine summers. To you, Mr. Booth, we dedicate the 1971 Meteor in return for the priceless gifts of knowledge and inspiration you have bestowed upon us. We want to express our deep gratitude for the guidance and support you have so unselfishly given us in your years of service to Winslow Public Schools. Your wise counsel will never be forgotten. Our other Meteor Dedicatee came to Winslow in 1940. He taught fourth and fifth grades at Lincoln School as the only male teacher. In 1941, he began his service to his country in the U.S. Air Force. He returned to Winslow during the school year 1947-48 and taught sixth grade at Wilson School. In 1948-51, he returned to the Air Force and taught ROTC at the University of Arizona in Tucson in 1953. In 1954-55, he returned to teach seventh grade in Winslow and coach basketball. In 1957, he became Winslow High School's principal and has faithfully served our high school for the past 14 years. At his own request, Mr. James L. Curtis will be principal of the Winslow Junior High School beginning the school year 1971-72. He attended Arizona State Teachers College at Tempe, and received his Bachelors Degree in 1938. In 1956, he received his Masters Degree from Arizona State College in Flagstaff. And to you, Mr. Curtis, we gratefully dedicate this 1971 Meteor for all your untiring service to your community and to the high school. It was your wise guidance and counseling that has built Winslow High School's outstanding reputation and has made us proud of our school. Your sincere interest and concern with all students of WHS and the City of Winslow will always be remembered and deeply appreciated by all who were privileged to receive it. SENIORS Melissa Ayers V. Pres., Doug Sorensen Rep., Tayva Rhoton Rep., Chris Greer Rep., Tracey Kirkland Sec. , Shirley Light Pres., Cathy Knight Treas. The Class of 71 was one of the best ever. They collected more money, won more contests, and contributed more spirit in their year of reign. The seniors accomplished many things, among these were changing of the dress code, a King and Queen of Hearts, and an Ugly Couple contest, and Baccalaureate and Graduation on the same night. Included in the many winnings of the class were the Chain contest, Miss Merry Christmas, Ugly Couple, King and Queen of Hearts, and Gym decorating. The seniors tied for second place on the Homecoming float. With all the money made by the seniors, there was quite a range of ideas used for their ditch day and senior activities for the end of the year. Mr. Griffith was our new Government and Sociology teacher. He also took over the National Honor Society. Mr. Griffith was also an active senior sponsor. The other senior sponsors were Mrs. Meikle, Mrs. Stotts, Mrs. McAuley, Mrs. Gipson, Mr, Knight, Mr. Downing, Mr. Hysong, Chairman, and Mr. Boswell. We appreciate their help in making a successful year for the class of 71 . ANITA DOLORES YBARRA 26 JUNIORS The class of 1972 Rosemary Ewan; Rep., Moreau Walters; V. Pres., Steve Brockwell; Pres., Jo Letts; Treas., Cydncy McLaws; Sec. This year began with a boom for the junior class. It all started with the first day of school when they realized that last year they were sophomores and next year they would be seniors. Their first victory came in the Homecoming Float Contest. They used the traditional class ring as their basic theme for their float. It was a beautifully done float deserving the first place they won. The next accomplishment was winning the trash can contest. Every club and class participated in decorating the trash cans around the campus. The juniors out did everyone with their original idea of a circle K milk carton, garbage can, outhouse, and a side with all the names of the people that helped on it. Then we all heard the halls ringing with the sounds of excited juniors as they exhibited their class rings. It was a time the class will never forget. The class ring is a treasured memory of your high school days. The basketball games proved very fruitful for the junior eager beavers. The concession stand of cokes and candy was a major money making project for the class, but also they sold candy bars and had a concession stand at the Christmas parade. Now 72 is the ruling class. They will enter the halls next year with a new outlook. We wish you all the luck the future holds! Pres. , Max Hathaway Pres., Gwen Sorensen, George Bertino, and Tom White, Rep. Here they are ! The proud class of 1973. At the end of the school year of 1971, they have completed their course as sophomores. They have dissected fish, frogs, grasshoppers, crayfish, and clams. A lot of new clubs and organizations were opened to them as sophomores which were not offered as freshmen. Soon more stripes will be uncovered for the letters they have earned in clubs, sports, and organizations. They also took on the responsibility of setting a good example to the new freshmen. They know the rules of the high school and they have learned to obey these rules. This year the sophomores did their best in the contests. They came in second in the chain making contest. They tied for second in the homecoming float contest. Their float consisted of a maroon and white football helmet which went with their theme Sophomores Support W.H.S. They really have gotten on the ball and supported Winslow High this year. The year began with the anxious freshman full of fear and excitement. They registered first and got a glimpse of their principal for the next four years. The following month they had their annual orientation where the upper classmen taught them the school songs and school cheers. They were told about the clubs they can participate in and the activities they can join. Then came the freshman auction where the upper classmen bought freshman for their slaves and the freshmen were told what to do. The class also began money raising efforts this year so they would have some of the finances needed for the various activities that will occur during their junior and senior years. These included selling donuts and candles. They were very energetic throughout the year. Winslow High is proud to have them. ACTIVITIES Mr. Conatser Homecoming Dedicatee 1970 Traditions was the theme for the 1970 homecoming assembly. Reigning from the throne of the WHS homecoming was Jeanne Soehner and Carry Hardy as they were crowned the 1970 Homecoming King and Queen. This years Homecoming Dedicatee, Mr. David Conatser, received this honor by his hard work and service to the high school. The weeks activities ended with a parade Friday afternoon, a victory game over Miami, and a dance after the game. Homecoming Candidates: Queen Jeanne Soehner, Amber Brimhall, Terri Curtis, Regina Ezell, and Tayva Rhoton HOMECOMING 1970 IS SUCCESSFUL Homecoming Candidates: Doug Sorensen, Curtis Hardy, Mike Faucher, Roddy Campbell, and King Carry Hardy. From top to bottom: Doug Sorensen, Dee Harrah, Chris Greer, Shirley Light, Mike Faucher, Jeanne Soehner DELEGATES IN GOVERNMENT During the week of June 8-14, Shirley Light, Dee Harrah, and Jeanne Soehner traveled to the University of Arizona to attend the 1970 Arizona Girls' State. During the same week, Chris Greer, Doug Sorensen, and Mike Faucher attended Boys' State at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. While attending the Girls' and Boys' State, they all learned the correct procedures of balloting, elections, and the running of government operations, whether it be city, state, or national government. All three girls held city offices and assisted in forming a city book for each of their cities. Doug Sorensen was elected to the office of Secretary of State. This took a great deal of campaigning and speech making. He also had the honor of being elected as a senator to Boys' Nation. From July 17-24, Doug spent his time in Washington, D. C. learning how our national government is run. His efforts have brought great honor upon Winslow High School, the American Legion, and those he represented in Arizona. 69 Doug Sorensen, delegate to Boys' Nation. “THE EGG I” Director-Ron Harris Betty Mac Dona Id--Norma Boswell Don MacDonald--Steve Brockwcll Anne MacDonald--Jo Letts Joan MacDonald—Peggy Gilliam Thad--Mark Fauchcr Daisy--Paula Cullum Mr. Mannix—Jeff Simpson Corinne--La Donna Steams Fishface--Mike Tsosic Hi-Baby--Bruce Foehner JJ—Mike Gifford Ross—George Higginson Lingery Lady—Karen Rice Millicent—Jan Lowrie Tessie—Moreau Walters Miss Linden--Nancy Normandin Grady--Victor Cooke Larsen—Wayne Smith Paula--Connie Clcavor Toni--Lesa Thomas Lolly--Judy Duran Mitzie--Elsie Johnson Student Director--Tayva Rlioton Stage Manager--Mark Boyle There's got to be an easier way to look slimmer. Surely every city slicker has, at one time, yearned for the healthy, outdoor life down on the farm. They traveled to the State Music Festival in Flagstaff during April and did a fine job. Rotary and Kiwanis have both enjoyed hearing the Concert Choi sing at their meetings. They made a fine addition to the Christmas Program in December, and performed a concert in May and another one in March. The Variety Show was a big success at the beginning of the year. At the first of May, they went on tour to Agua Fria, Peoria, and McClintock high schools. In order to become a member of this group, one has to perform in front of Mr. Arthur. The Madrigal Choir of Winslow High School is an honorary club composed of several of the best choir members. In order to enter this group, one has to audition in front of Mr. Arthur, for he is the final authority on the members. They started out the year by singing for the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast in September. Everyone who attended this breakfast enjoyed their singing. Later in the year they attended the Solo and Ensemble Festival in St. Johns and received an admirable rating. Mesa Community College was the site for the State Festival for them this year. HONOR SOCIETY Honor Society is an honorary club composed of Juniors and Seniors who have the qualities of leadership, service, character, and scholarship. A person has to be in the upper 10 percent of the Junior class and the upper 15 percent of the Senior class in order to qualify for membership. Mr. Griffith took over as sponsor this year and has done a good job. The year started out for Honor Society by inducting 10 Juniors and 17 Seniors at their annual assembly, bringing the total membership to 35. The activities began by the club selling chocolate bars and chocolate covered almonds for a money-making project. Before school let out for Christmas vacation, everyone worked hard on decorating the school with a huge Christmas tree and signs on every door, then celebrated by having a party at Cathey Knight's house. To raise money for the Heart Fund, Honor Society sponsored a Heart Fund Dance where a King and Queen of Hearts were crowned. There were candidates selected for both King and Queen from each class. Seniors David Rencher and Regina Ezell won. This June all tire graduating Seniors who are in Honor Society will be wearing a gold cord hanging down the front of their Graduation gowns. This will be to distinguish them from the rest of the graduating class. Members of Honor Society participate in a meeting toward the end of the year. Row 1: S. Wong, M. McPhetridge, T. Rhoton, S. At 2 o'clock in the afternoon the annual room is filled with many busy people working to produce the Meteor of Winslow High School. Between the editor's leadership, the photographer's heavy schedule, and the lay-out people's patience, the annual is produced each year with deadlines to meet and problems to solve. To be in annual you must be able to type, write clever captions, and informative copy. The students have learned valuable information in the fields of advertising, sports, lay-out, promotion, sales, and activities. Each member of the annual staff contributes to the production of the annual. Each member, also, is as important as the editor, business managers, or the asst, editor. The job of the editor is to over-see the production of the yearbook. The asst, editor is the person being trained for the next year's annual. The job of the business managers is to sell advertising to die local businessmen and to promote annual sales. Although annual class is a lot of hard work, the information received can be very valuable in the future. 84 Clarence and Paula make good use of their time. An official publication of the Winslow High School is the Bulldog Barks. The Bulldog Barks is published every month to inform the students and to provide a record of what is happening around their school. The Bulldog Barks work very hard to get the paper out to their classmates each month. Each month there is something new and exciting in the paper. There is usually some sort of safety feature or club feature. LEARNING THROUGH SCIENCE The Winslow High School Science Club was buzzing with activities this year. The radio section of the club assembled a low power radio transmitter which could be picked up on any AM radio. The computer section learned to assemble flow charts and write simple programs that were run on a computer. Various member projects included the construction of various other small pieces of equipment. The purpose of the Science Club is to stimulate an interest in the fields of science which may lead to careers in science. Mr. Dryden demonstrates to the members of Science Club the proper use of an AM Radio The Spanish Club, active year-round, participated in several school activities this year including: the Trash Can Contest, in which they won second place, the Homecoming Parade, and several money-making projects. The basic purpose of the club is to provide its members with a working knowledge of the life of the Spanish speaking people. They explore the culture, language, food, and customs of the Spanish people, and try to understand their way of life. Their activities started out with the Senior Play, WE'RE ALL GUILTY and the Junior Play, THE EGG AND I, which were both received very well. February brought several plays for the Children's Theater. A Saturday performance drew a big crowd of young and old alike. HANSEL AND GRETEL was performed in May for the Children's Theater. The Debate Team met Window Rock for practice debate in February. Later the whole speech team returned to Window Rock and took first place in the Navajoland Speech Tournament. The following week the District Speech and Drama Tournament was held at Coconino. Winslow placed 2nd in district. The NAU Speech Festival was the next week, and competitors from Winslow won many individual awards. Four students attended State Speech Tournament in Tucson. At Christmas a play was presented in several local churches called The Little Match Girl. In May an Evening of 1-Acts was presented as a Christian drama. We extend sincere congratulations to this fine club for their work. Mrs. Bradshaw gets assistance from members of Speech and Drama in order to obtain her teaching certificate. 88 The Future Teachers of America was started in WHS during the second semester. Mr. Boles became the sponsor of the club at this time. One requirement for membership is that each member has to observe in some elementary or Junior High classroom two times a month. This consists of the member either observing and taking notes in the classroom or doing some actual teaching. If it is possible to work into the high school schedule, one many become a cadet teacher and teach in a school one hour a day for one full credit. This was not possible this year due to the late start of the club. An April Fool's Bake Sale was sponsored by the club and it resulted in a fine profit for the club. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA FHA stresses home life and the fun that can be obtained from home economics. The Creed stresses the fact that they are building for the future and seeking old, precious values. In FHA the girls work toward degrees that help them grow as individual, family members, club members and school and community members. FHA has participated in many different activities this year. They have painted trash cans, had tostadas and burrito sales, and an initiation breakfast. Next year promises even more for the girls who plan on joining this organization. A few of the FHA students are sampling their cooking. KEY CLUB DEVELOPED MORE INITIATIVE Front row: D. Baker, M. Faucher, P. Beaty, E. Coin, J. Benham. Second row: C. Haney, T. Oso, J. Hopson, J. They raised the flag and rang the bell at all home football games. They worked at the All-Indian Rodeo and spent the morning helping at the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast. They also sold Spook Insurance for the March of Dimes and put on a fashion show. They modeled clothes from the various stores around town. The last and most important event of the year was their annual Western Stomp. This is the club's biggest money raising project of the year. This justifies the fact that the Key Club this year has earned the title of being an honorary organization that helps out the school and the community. Tilfred Oso along with other Key Club members helped park cars at the rodeo. DECA—THE WORKING CLUB First row: V. Podruchny, L Wellman, G. Gorham, L. Mendoza, F. Olague, K. Trujillo, M. Armijo, G. Officers for the year were: Gary Moody, Pres., Ruby Collins, V. Pres., Jonee Patterson, Sec., Mary Mazon, Treas., and Kathy Beeson, Rep. Activities for the year included fall workshops, a homecoming float, and tire state convention. Butch Bradford and Gloria Tafoya are practicing for job interviews, which is a part of the many things learned in the class activities. The 1970-71 orchestra's membership is that of the string ensemble accompanied by select members of the band. They have regular practices in order to perform two concerts, participate at Festival in Flagstaff, and go on tour. Their tour this year was a reservation tour. They went to Many Farms, Winslow Rock, and Canado. The orchestra was received with enthusiasm from all of the schools. Fruit Cakes were their major money-making project for this year. The prices were $3.00, $5.00, and $8.00. Quite a bit of money was made on this. The group must meet on week nights in order for the entire membership to practice. These are every Tuesday evening. The group has made a name for themselves in Northern Arizona and will continue in this endeavor. Melissa Ayres was chosen for All-State Orchestra and also received a 1 at the State Festival in Mesa. METEORETTES Winslow High School Meteorettes is a group of 10 girls who perform at the football games and basketball games. They also promote WHS spirit. Tryouts are held every spring and each girl must be able to pass a set of requirements before they are admitted into the group. During football season the girls march with the band and do routines during halftime. They perform routines at basketball games to the music of their choice. With the help of their sponsor, Mrs. Hysong, these girls have contributed a great deal to the functions of the High School. They make up all of their own routines and work many hours outside of school time. This years' Meteorettes provided much entertainment and enjoyment for the Winslow fans and we know they will continue to in the years to come. 1970-1971 Meteorettes Left to right Mary Lee McPhctridge, Regina Ezell, Teresa Ylarrez, Diane Heartz, La Donna Stearns, Tayva Rhoton, Roxie Martin, Jeanne Soehner, Jennie Rice, Dee Harrah. You will see them most often at football games, as they are part of the program put on by the Band at half-time. Once in a while they will perform a routine for the student body at a pep assembly or at a basketball game. This year's Majorettes were Judy Duran and Cheryl Weatherton. 97 Cheryl Weatherton The band of 1970-71 was a very eventful one. They performed at all home football games with an array of intricate drills along with popular music for the many interested fans. Again, this year, the favorite song was The Horse. The next event they all prepared for was District Solo and Ensemble Festival. Players receiving a 1 and eligible for State competition were Connie Thompson, David Rencher, Renee Bonvillion, Sue Wong, Ursula McLean, Bill White, Mike Ayres, and the Clarinet Quartet. David Rencher and Mike AyTes received a 1 at State. The band played their Winter Concert in February. The music included a wide range of tunes from Bach to Nehlybcl. Their next concert was in April followed by their annual tour in the Tempe area. This year, however, they competed at the AA-AAA Festival rather than at Flagstaff. This year more students than ever attended All-State in Tucson. This is a band made up of the best musicians who have tried out for the band. The Winslow Cross Country team displayed fine effort this year in winning the Division 1 Championship and placing second at the state meet. The team got off to a slow start but progressed well during the season into the best team in Winslow's cross country history. Woody Franklin led Winslow's team by placing first in eight of the thirteen meets in which he participated. He also set a course record at Winslow of 12:37 for 2.6 miles. Others who did outstanding jobs and earning letters arc Alvin John, Alvin Thompson, Marvin Toddy, Wayne Taylor, Bennett Chatter, Peter Johnson, Albert Peaches, and Rudy Etsitty, manager. 126 Alvin John gives a strong performance in the Winslow Kiwanis Meet. The Bulldogs Varsity wrestlers started very slowly this year. They lost most of their early matches and tournaments. The Christmas Vacation marked the beginning of this years fine wrestling team. The boys made up their minds that it was time to start winning. The wrestlers continued their winning tradition of the past eight years. They won the District Championship and went on to win the runner up spot over the enitre state. They now have an eight year record of five team state championships and were runners up state champions the other three years. Most of the top wrestlers of this year's team will be back next year, and this will insure a fine effort to regain the number one spot which the boys have occupied for so many years. Each Junior Varsity boy has a chance to win his letter by winning his way into the two top boys in each weight. This fierce competition starting in the Junior Varsity has been one of the principal reasons for Winslow wrestlers being State Champions most years. This years Junior Varsity team was a good one and Coach McArthur anticipates that several of the boys will make the big time next year. Luther McLean goes onto the mat, to defeat Holbrook. Although hampered by injuries, the freshmen were rewarded for their efforts by a scoreboard of 8 wins and only 1 loss. Danny Smith and Mike Day also substituted on Varsity. This was one of the most excellent freshman wrestling teams that Winslow . But it would take the power output of more than 900 Hoover Dams to equal the energy flowing through the nation's natural gas pipelines each day. Over 797,000 miles of gas pipelines now crisscross the country. Which isn't surprising when you consider that more than 28,000,000 American families are heating with gas. Not to mention those who use it for cooling, cooking, water heating and clothes drying. Or the 26,000 ways in which 168,000 industrial plants are using it. SAND N’ SAGE A. A.A. More than a million new customers each year are turning to gas because it does these modern jobs more efficiently. More dependably. For less money. So who needs 900 Hoover Dams? If you want the job done right ... do it with gas. Remember when you devoted all those hours of practice to an athletic team, club or class, or sacrificing your homework for those special events such as the Junior Prom or Senior Activities? Everything that each one of us has contributed to the school was captured in the 1971 Meteor. The involvement of the students in the annual class went not only from the classroom, but also into the outside activities to capture the emotions and excitement that went into each activity that took place. As each of you glance through the pages of the yearbook, I hope you are able to recall to mind the long-forgotten experiences and facts of the year that will remain in your personal lives from now on. Wc feel very fortunate to have such a capable advisor as Mr. Conatser, for without his guidance wc would be lost. To my staff, I say Thank You All for without each of you the yearbook would have not been as complete. Your cooperation and hard work have been appreciated. I sincerely hope that you will enjoy the 1971 METEOR as much as I have enjoyed editing it for you, and I hope that it will be of lasting value to you in the future years. 176 Terri Curtis Editor .............................................................. ■ - . . . . .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... . ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
