CHERYL THOMAS PERI RAYGOR DEDICATION OF THE 1969 METEOR Active in both academic and athletic activities at Winslow High, Mr. Fritz is this year's Meteor dedicatee. Enthusiastic about high school sports, he has coached both track and Junior varsity football. But math is his real business at Winslow High. His sense of humor adds interest to his classes. Of value to his students is his willingness to give individual attention to anyone desiring it. Always there with a quick wit, a mind for math, a ready smile, and an interest and enthusiasm in his students, Mr. Fritz well deserves die dedication of the 1969 Meteor. SENIOR PLAY Mrs. Gloster always gets her man. But WOW what tactics! On Nov. 14 the Class of 69 presented their class play, The Ghost of Cemetery Ridge. The auditorium was filled with laughter at the antics of Debbie Cutter and Kathy Gloster, who had set out to raise $80,000 for a community swimming pool. Arranging a date for rich Barbara (Ugh) Dalton with unsuspecting cousin Edwin and renting rooms to mysterious young ladies were just two of their schemes. Things backfired when Edwin wanted to go hunt treasure on Cemetery Ridge. If things weren't bad enough Kathy's mother was madly chasing Uncle George and a real live GHOST appeared on the scene. The Drunkard or The Fallen Saved was the best accepted play ever produced at Winslow High. What made such a good play? Maybe it was the fact that all of the actors and actresses acted exceptionally well. Maybe the script fit the people who played it. Maybe Tracey Karcher was a great director. Maybe it was the fact that everyone loves a good old-fashion me Her drainer. People like to hate villians like Squire Cribbs, and old cronies like Miss Spindle, and they like to be able to admire heroes like Edward and William and heroines like Mary and Agnes. But most of all people like to see heroes succeed and villians be foiled again. Jim Beam cures the gout. THE JUNIOR PLAY Should old aquaintance be forgot... That's what all the guests of the Junior Prom were believing by twelve o’clock midnight, when it ended so that all the Cinderellas could be escorted home before they all turned back into everyday school-girls again. The gym was decorated in shades of blue with a red and yellow center which contained the cool combo and carousel horses. The girls were given dance cards and fairyland lollipops. Mr. Taylor was crowned dedicatee and Andrea Sorenson was crowned the queen. There were people dancing and prancing, yakking and snacking, but most of all, people were having fun. CHORUS VARIETY SHOW Laugh-In wouldn't be complete without the boy on the bicycle (Ray lanni). The Crocodile by Henry Gibson alias Harry Martin. Katie O'Neill and Peggy West add a touch of culture to the program. The Winslow High School Chorus sings several selections for the program led by Director, William N. Arthur. At both States, the delegates formed city governments like those of Arizona. Each delegate is assigned to one of two parties, and each party elects all the officers needed for their government. Also, a governor is elected for the whole State. They learn how Arizona’s government operates and it gives them a better understanding of city and state governments. During the week, there are many guest speakers such as Arizona's Secretary of State, an FBI man, and a Congressman. Both Girls' and Boys' States are very worthwhile programs as it acquaints the young people of today with government. The band also contributes to the spirit and atmosphere of all home football games and pep assemblies. This year the marching band performed at eight football games, the Homecoming and Christmas parades, the grand opening of Winslow West, and the A.S.U. Marching Band Festival. During concert season the Symphonic Band makes many appearances which include the All School Christmas Program, Mid-Western Concert, Spring Concert, Pre-Festival Concert, Masonic Essay Awards Program, and the Graduation ceremonies. They also entered the Northern Arizona Music Festival and received the honor of outstanding band. Several of the members put forth an extra effort and played a solo or with an ensemble at the District and State Solo and Ensemble Festival. Also eight of the band members participated in the 1969 All State Music Festival held at the University of Arizona, under guest conductor Frank Piersol, Director of Bands at the University of Iowa. To begin the 1968 season they faced Holbrook which proved to be their hardest win. The score was 0-0 until the last few minutes of the 2nd quarter when the Bulldogs forced their way through the Holbrook line to make a TD and extra point. The second half proved nearly fatal when Holbrook tied them to a 13-13 score. But luckily in the remaining 2 1 2 minutes, the Bulldogs took the game with a score of 19-13. The Junior Varsity B team learned how to be good winners by winning the remaining games with a leaway of at least 22 points in each of the final scores. Although the 1968-69 edition of the Winslow High School basketball varsity did not achieve an outstanding won-lost record, they did represent their school with a hard fighting, never say die brand of basketball in each game. The Bulldogs steadily improved and developed into a very tough ball club, especially in the latter stages of the season. Whether ahead or behind in the score, in each ball game the boys never stopped hustling. Season highlights were the wins over Window Rock, Mingus, and Snowflake. Arizona Winslow, Arizona Do We Really Need Nine Hundred Hoover Dams? No. Because natural gas is with us. But it would take the power output of more than 900 Hoover Dams to equal the energy flowing through the nation's natural gas pipelines each day. Over 797,000 miles of gas pipelines now crisscross the country. Which isn't surprising when you consider that more than 28,000,000 American families are heating with gas. Not to mention those who use it for cooling, cooking, water heating and clothes drying. Or the 26,000 ways in which 168,000 industrial plants are using it. More than a million new customers each year are turning to gas because it does these modern jobs more efficiently. More dependably. For less money. So who needs 900 Hoover Dams? If you want the job done right ... do it with gas. SOUTHERN UNION 4 COMPANY COME IN AND SEE THE CAGE AT BABBITT BROS. Third WINSLOW, ARIZONA 289-2446 As the Editor of the 1969 Meteor, I have many experiences to look back upon. The year was an exciting one, as we have tried to depict in this Yearbook. It is my earnest hope that we have well represented your high school days. In preparing our 1969 Yearbook, the annual staff has contributed many hours of hard and tedious work. Believe it or not, we met our deadlines and came through with few casualities, and some good ideas to show. Our theme this year has been happiness is. To an editor, happiness is an excellent Advisor. Without Mr. Conatser’s supervision this annual would not exist. To an editor, happiness is a hard working staff. I thank each of the staff members for every minute of their time spent on the annual. I extend a special thanks to Debbie Mitchell and the advertising staff for their excellent work. Of course, a very special thanks goes to you, the students. Without you, there wpuld not be a yearbook. It is my earnest desire that you will continue to give more support to the payment and production of the Winslow High School Meteor.
