This huiltling, situiiteel on the corner of Washington .intl lirogiclwxiy on the sitc of the present Junior High School, had two entrances. Including the hiisement and the tower there were four stories to the huiltling: in the hasement, the iginitor liveclg on the secontl floor were the principg1l's office. the superintentlents office, and several eliiss roomsg on the thirtl tloor w ere the class rooms and the freshman and sophomore tissemhly rooms. Gas was used to light the school for some years. The winclows were spacious, and the building was coniprirativcly well ventilutetl. The oltl high school across the street was left stancling and was usecl as the Junior High until a new one was huilt. The erection of these huilclings was another step in the develops ment of hetter facilities for secontlary etlucation in Winona. The present Senior High has remainetl almost unchangetl in appearance. hut more motlern equipment has heen atltletl ancl repairs have heen made to keep the huiltling up to moclern stanclartls. ln 192T a clecitlecl improvef ment was matle with the huiltling ol a new wing. This wing inclutles a very large. spacious authtorium with a seating capacity of ahout 14170, a large gymnasium which may he tlivitlecl into two sections hy a huge clrop curtain, a heautiful swimming pool, locker rooms antl showers for the hoys and girls. .-Xs the huilcling ancl equipment were improvetl, so were the courses en- largecl and hetteretl. lfire courses are now ollierecl: commercial, general. acatlemic, inclustrial, antl technical. They are arrangecl so that the stuclent is oflrered a wide range of subiects in any course. Four years of high school lfnglish are required before graduation from any course. Credits are given for glee club. band, and orchestra work, and activity points are given for outside activities. Here, with better accommodations, athletics and outside activities have been increased year by year. lnter-room and inter-school sports are now car- ried on actively between the various home-rooins and high schools. Boys' golf,swimming, track,basketball, and football teams from this school compete with teams from other schools. Before l92T the boys engaged in the various sports either outside or in the gymnasium ofthe Y. M, CQ. A. The girls as well as the boys carrv on intereroom sports but they do not carrv on intere school sports as the boys do. Social activities as well as athletic activities have been carried on in the auditorium and gymnasium, Dances and parties have been given in the gymnasium, and programs and plays have been given at regular intervals in the auditorium. The Radiograph has advanced as well as the curriculum and activities. liach vear the theme of the Radiograph is changed. This year it is Progress The descriptions and pictures of the old and new buildings clearly illustrate the distance we have gone on the path of progress. A few vears from now another senior class may look back and see the progress which has been made since we, the class of l93-1, issued the thirtyf fourth edition of the Radiograph. MR. I . if ln Septemher, 1951, one hundred and fifty-eight frightened and expectant sophomores entered our heloved high school. l'nder the guidance of Miss Myrtle Moore and Mr. Loy lf. Bowe, the class elected Phyllis Stewart as president, Luella Stephan, vice-president, Shirley Polley, secretary, and Eunice .johnson as treasurer. Bernard Meier and Phyllis Stewart represented the sophomores class on the Student Teacher Council. The following were, as tenth-graders, memhers of the HieNews staff: Bernard Meier, Beatrice Seekainp, Dorothea Carroll, Gertrude Hoge, Frank Berg, Antoinette Bittner, and Olive Fried. Mary Eehring won the D. A. R. essay contest. The present senior class was well represented in activities during their iunior year. In September, 1952, the junior class with an enrollment of one hundred and ninety elected their class ollicers. Albert White was chosen presidentg Bernard Meier, vice-president, Marion McCarthy, secretary, and Nlary Fehring, treasurer. Miss Louise Harris and Mr. Rohert Henry were class advisers, The iunior representatives on the Student Teacher Council were Norma Krenzke, Donald Holzinger, Gretchen Grimm and William Leonard. Marion McCarthy won the D. A. R. junior essay contest. Now, lweing a group of more serious-minded hoys and girls, the senior class of '54 sought to accomplish as much as possilwle in its last year of high school guidance. The .june senior class carried on its Business under the supervision of Miss Florence Laney and Mr. Philip Sauer. Henry Hirschfeld, president, XVilliam Leonard, vice-president: Gretchen Grimm, treasurer, and Dolores Ciseska, secretary acted capalwly as class olhcers. Thejanuary class elected the following oflicersz president, Marion Schup- pel, vice-president, Eileen Haase, treasurer, Josephine Corlisg and secretary, Luther Kressin.
