WALKER, B.A., M.A. Superintendent K These members of the Winn Parish School Board, along with Mr. Eugene Garrett, deceased, have rendered a most important public service in the work of developing basic school policies. Their further concern with the endorsement of any and all efforts to improve our school system have been invaluable. Thus, in countless ways, they have given encouragement to the stu- dent in his quest for learning and good citizenship. Left: R. L. TERRY, B.A., M.A., Supervisor. Right: MARVIN WYATT, B.S. Visiting Teacher. Page 6 In future years, when you look back in your Salt Rock, I hope that it will serve to recall pleasant memories of your many experiences, and to reveal why all the extra subjects, new courses of study, and various activities were added for the enrichment of your school program. Your school has initiated many educational 'cfirstsi' during the last few years. These have been the result of much professional study by many people. I hope that your faculty will always try to attain the highest levels in their professional and academic work. The effectiveness of our school is seen not only in our graduates, but also in the dropouts. We have seen many of our students become successful doctors, teachers, business leaders, secretarial workers, preachers, and vocational specialists. We take special pride in saying that most of our future homemaking girls become successful homemakers. I hope that you will be able to say that your high school played a definite part in your life. It is certainly a pleasure to work with the nicest group of high school students in the state. Sincerely, Page 7 RALPH IRVING B.M.E. Music J .1 BOB EDWARDS B.S., M.Ed. Science EVERETT THURMOND B.S. Band, under the direction of Mr. Ralph Irving, ranked among the school's most active organizations, its functions varying from playing for formal concerts to loyal support of the football team. During the fall, the band played at all Tiger games, presenting half- time shows and supplying snappy music all throughout the game. The band marched in the Forest Festival, Homecoming, and Rodeo Parades. They also presented a performance of music at the State Teachers, Con- vention held at Alexandria, Louisiana. The major- ettes, Brenda Carpenter, Jan Jenson, Glenda Calk, Sherie Dunn, Mary Lynn Wells and Fran Varnell, presented a twirling routine during the half-time ceremonies at each football game. Head Drum Major this year is Allen Roy Swilley. He has been in the band five years and Drum Major one year. DOLORES CARTER President Sponsor Forward March! is the command often heard by all Senior, Junior, Sophomore and Freshman girls who are members of the W.H.S. Tigerettes. The high-stepping W.H.S. Pep Squad, led by President Priscilla Long, under the direction of Mrs. Dolores Carter, has drawn many complimentary remarks from local fans. Everytime the Pep Squad was in action all eyes were upon the front row which was composed of the Pep Squad Major- ettes dressed in red shorts and white sweaters, This is the first year the organization has had its own majorettes. Following close behind the front row were six little cutiesn in short red skirts. The last six rows of girls, dressed in street length red skirts, completed the very striking Squad. Although these girls did not march at half-time performances, they were very high spirited with their support of the Tiger Team. 1 :- OFFICERS: M. Shivers, C. Nugent, L. Swilley, K. Self, M. Team members regarded the experi- ence gained as valuable in building a winning team for 1959. PEE WEES PONY LEAGUE Page 57 Coach DOLORES CARTER In Winnfield, sports of all kinds have an unusually large following among both spectators and players. By late fall all are eagerly waiting for basketball season to begin. The ,59 Tigerettes were well rewarded for all the practices with a record of 30 wins against 11 losses and second in District 1-A. One of the highlights of the year was when the hard fighting Tigerettes managed to capture the Parish Tourna- ment for the second consecutive year. The team also walked away with first place trophies at Sikes and Chatamg and second place trophies at WHS, Calvin, Dodson, and Farm- erville. Congratulations to you-THE TIGERETTES. With only one returning letterman from '58 Crowe showed his ability as a coach to build a team. Their many practices and hard work was evident as they played throughout the season. Although wins were numbered the Tigers played hard in each game and showed great desire to win. Determination ran high when the WHS boys walked away with the Winn Parish Tournament after upsetting Dodson who had an 8-0 record in the parish. The same thing happened in '58 so the '59 season was a repeat of historyf, Hopes are high for next year,s team as only two lettermen will be lost through graduation. As soon as the weather is warm enough, the Track Squad begins reporting to the field, for some hard workouts and the excellent coaching of Coach Straughn. The Tigers are expected to give all their opponents some stiff competition. The coaches and team are anticipating a good season. lt is hoped that the school can enter meets weekly, with several of the contests staged on the home field. The climax of the season will occur late in the year with district com- petition. ln the event that our team wins this contest, their next and final step will be the state meet. Good luck to you-THE TRACK TEAM. Let's have a lot of first places in various track meets. Stressing skill and precision instead of speed, this sport has long been a favorite in the school. Hopes are high for a record of victories this year. Everyone is eagerly anticipating the District Rally at NSC. This tournament will he held on April 24. Volleyball is one sport that has no classification, every school plays each of the other schools. The Tigerette Volleyball Team under the capable direc- tion of Coach Carter is looking forward to a good season.
