S , ' Over Candy s backyard fence , je 5 ,,,, I , , A 21900-tline' prompts Writer ' !Q,,,fE to delfhe halloween l I A., hx S fs KN Mr by Candy Cochran Well kiddos it s almost B00-TIME and all those sweet trick-or-treaters will be on the prowl. Do you really know about Halloween? Have you ever wondered where all those hobgoblins, witches, ghosts, and jack-o-lanterns come from? Well, your friendly chit-chatter started wondering about it all and believe it or not I got up the initiative lthat means get up and g0l t0 find out about it, so here are the s-c-a-r-y facts. Halloween means -- are you ready? --sure?-- believe it or not, Halloween means hallowed or holy evening. It does seem kind of funny because just how many ghosts and black cats do you see carrying around their little Bible on Halloween? No, it is really called this because it takes place the day before All Saints' Day. lAnd this is not the ones in New Orleans I assure youl. For all you superstitious people, you better bundle yourself up and forget Halloween or the goblins are gonna get you if you don't watch out! The Irish have a tale about the Jack-o-latern. They say that a man named Jack was excluded from Heaven because of his miserliness and kept from Hell by his practical jokes of the devil, so he had to carry a lantern on earth till Judgement Day and appeared in everyone's home on Halloween. - Then there are all the spooks such as ghosts, spirits, fairies, elves, and witches come from the Druids, a group of priests in Ancient Gaul. These were supposed to harm people. But all they do today is rob you of all your candy and goodies. The cat is supposed to be scared and was once believed to have been human changed as a punishment for bad deeds. I wonder who were the culprits that appeared under portable 005? I In earlier times boys and girls would pull harmless pranks, but today things can get pretty serious. There have been reports of razor blades in apples, vandalism, and crimes on Halloween. Luckily, way out here in the boondocks in South Jackson the most we get is a few egged cars lyukl, rolled yards, and several fire poppers .or so. Just enough to add a touch of mischief to this event for all ages. So guys and gals -- get out your masks and your goody bags cause Spook-time is just around the corner! 0 Until next Time ---- C. C. The finest student bodies and an excellent staff of teachers have made Wingfield the envy of Mississippi high schools for seven years. Last year was one of the best that any school, anywhere could have. We look forward to an even better year for 1973-74. Plan so you can participate in some phase of school activities. School is here for instruction primarily but students have not lived the full student life without participation in related school activities - athletics, honor organizations, publications, per- forming groups, and other organizations that mean so much to the school and to you. Good luck! All of the professional staff wishes for each of you an enjoyable and profitable year. --Mr. Measells 'EQ s'- ' ' l - 5 5 ffl Guy LJHO IS gona er xi E U E R Y TH I N G . f lg - - I '- EDITORS: .Ian Ponder, David Callas 3 W H H E I S ' ASSISTANT EDITORS: Patti Ellingfgfi, Candy Cochran.
