For their first year the Vikings can be proud of their record and with the continued spirit and assistance of these two coaches, Winfield high can look forward toward greater accomplishments on the gridiron. An early call for candidates brought forth 55 football aspirants, and 45 were 5 9 4 kept in suits for first and second terms. In four weeks Coaches Thomas and Folck shaped a team that did not compete for Ark Valley honors but played a schedule which included three of the Valley schools. In the initial game of the season, played Sept. 29, the Blue and White suffered a 39 to 0 beating at the hands of the powerful Wichita North Redskins who later won the Ark Valley title. Against Wellington's perennial champions the Vikings showed vast improvement by holding the Crusaders to an 18 to 6 score. In the final period the Vikings scored their first touchdown in nine years on a pass play from Sidener to B. Thornton. In their only road game of the season the Vikings journeyed to Wichita to engage Wichita East. Playing on a muddy field the Vikings were blanked 18 to 0 by the Aces. Returning to their home field the Vikings pulled an upset by knocking over the much favor- ed Spartans of Emporia. Touchdowns by Sidener and McAlister gave the Vikings a 13 to 6 decis- ion over Emporia. In their final game of the season the Vikings ran wild over Harper high, fast champions of S K. L. in 1939-40. Page ' Q. NORTH-SOUTH-EAST-WEST, WINFIELD A fifteen game winning streak that carried the blue and white straight to the finals of the state meet highlighted Winfield high's 1942 basketball seasonefa season that saw the Vikings take second place in both the State and Ark Valley. Beginning the season early in December the Vikings overpowered an Oklahoma aggregation from Ponca City -1-1 to 17. First up in league play was the Wichita North quintet which fell 26 to 17 for the Vikings first Ark Valley victory. Making their first invasion of an enemy court the blue and white lost a close 20 to 22 decision to Newton. Winfield came back to down Wellington 39 to 25 on the home court. Then came a low ebb in basketball as the Vikings lost two consecutive league games. one to Hutchinson 13 to 19. and the other to Arkansas City 20 to 22. Along with these two losses went an unexpected 22 to 23 loss to an inspired Augusta quintet. From then on the Viking team showed strength. Beginning with Wichita East and El Dorado in the first round. the Vikings then proceeded to go through the second round of Valley play without a defeat. Included in the streak was a non-league victory over Emporia. Highlights of the streak were victories over Newton. Hutchinson, and Arkansas C ity. Moving into the regional the Vikings added two more victims to their streak: Wellington and Arkansas City. The Vikings' victory over Arkansas City on the latter's home court was the first time the Vikings had turned the trick in three years. Having qualified for the State meet.the Vikings packed their grips for Topeka. In their first game the Vikings had abattle with Coffeyville. but they managed a close 31 to 27 decision. Gale Stout salvaged the Viking cause in the second game as he led the Vikings to a close 19 to 16 victory over Manhattan. In the semi-finals the Vikings were hot as they scored an impressive 43 to 25 victory over Topeka. ' Reaching the finals the Vikings encountered as their opponents their arch rivals. Newton's Railroaders. Although the Vikings pulled away to an early lead. Newton won 29 to 24. Under the able guidance of Coach Ollie Thomas the Vikings won 18 out of 23 games, adding to the glories of the blue and white. I Si-iener li. 'l hr-'nt In Alloway J.
