Page 3 ALPHA By winning both football and bas- ketball ticket sales and the privilege of sitting on the north side the Alphas proved that they are the ticket selling champions of W.H.S. for 1941-42. F In Don't Take My Penny, the annual Alpha play, Ed Day and Lucien Barbour exhibited marked talent as impersonatorsg Emily Bernstorf, M a r g a r e t Chapman, Dale Minear, Stanley Jenkins, and Aaron Johnson demonstrated their ability in character parts: Marilyn McAlister, George Smith, Phyllis Harris, Barbara King, Frances Rus- sell and James Garrison showed their skill in straight roles, and Bernadine Davis, Evelyn Wade, Evelyn Harris and Warren Orahood revealed their competency in por- traying minor characters. The Spring Track Meet, an hi- larious affair of cheers, races, and eats, was run off under the super- vision of president, Bill Thornton: vice-president, Gale Stoutg secretary, Evelyn Wade, and the following committee members: Larman John- son, Gene Porter, Pat Graham, Lu- cien Barbour, Ed Day, George Smith, Butch Mitschler, Aaron Johnson, Ann Sidener, Jane Gary. Bill Winfrey, Peggy Osterhout, Bar- bara King, George Reynolds, Emily Bernstorf, Kenneth Bean, Lionel Cherry, Margaret Chapman, Don Dietrick, Bernadine Davis, Jean Douglas, Jack Fruits, Marilyn Mc- Alister, Nuel Hinegardner, Jose- phine Jones, Rafeal Lopez, Vic Martin, Warren Orahood, Dale Mi- near, Barbara Richardson, Joe Stu- ber, and La Nelle Wilson. Q Page 21 JUN :OR l-ner: sci-loo Junior high students play an important part in Winfield high school activities. The student senate which has charge of activity points, junior high election, and numerous ac- tivities of the junior high, is sponsored by Mrs. Pearl Bartholomeau. A special project taken by the student body this year was the reducing of the high school light bill with Everett Higdon and Harold Hanshaw as chairmen. Mary Lou Conrod was winner of the Book Week prize. The quiz was held in junior high assem- bly Nov. 13. Many of the junior high students' talents are revealed in the various music organizations. The junior high students were more than active in A Cappella choir. Outstanding were Donald Chase. Elden Schroeder, Harold Carroll, George McNeish, Dorothy Stephenson, Jean Thomas, Marilyn Thornton,Corinne Edwards, Olive Soule, Betty Anne Smith, Maxine Taton, and Norvel Osborn. Applause group of the choral section was the junior high sextet composed of Jim Watkins, E. L. Van Laningham, Bill Plank, Ernest Kantiz. Kenneth Sidener, and Dale Meirs. Also in band and orchestra the junior high group are numerous: active are Phillip Albright, Raymond Oldham, Don Wind, Bobby Buss, Jimmie Albright, Patti Reiter, George McNeish, Dorothy Stephenson, Joan Miller, Margery Riggs, Norma Kastor, and Bertina Smith. Every pupil tests were given to the junior high students, Jan. 8. Placing highest in the state with a perfect score in eighth grade spelling was Ruth Ann Bergevin. In the upper five per cent were Eugene Gates, Eleanor Goode, Opal McDaniel, Robert Mossman, and Darvin Waite. . Seventh grade spelling winners were Neva Martling and Ara Sheeks with perfect scores and highest in the state. Bob Jones was in the upper five per cent. Freshmen English winners in the upper five per cent were Patricia Sable, June Powell, Marilyn McNeish. Jane Crawford, Dorothy Porter, Martha Luton, and Harold Hanshaw. Seventh grade English--Janet Yoder, upper one per cent: Bob Jones, Frances Baxter, Lilajane Hiatt, Eugene Weaver, Billy Lou Carroll, Reva Sturm, and Joan Martin in the upper five per cent. Winners in creative writing contest were Dorothy Stephenson, Max Holroyd, and Jim Watkins. Junior high cheerleaders were Maxine Taton, head cheerleader: Ruby Duncan, Kenneth Sidener, and Jackie Crawford. ' Head sponsor for ninth grade, Miss Lucy Hunter: eighth grade, Miss Willma Tullis: seventh grade, Miss Nina Heller. Norvel Osborn presided as president of junior high student body. Miss Lucy Headrick coached the junior high play, Penrod, given May 7-8. The cast includ- ed Jack King, Eugene Weaver, Don Miles, Jack Crawford, Robert Raynes, Eldon Schroeder, Harold Carrell, Everett Higdon, Phillip Albright, Robert Light, Robert Mossman, George McNeish, Bob Jones, Betty Lou Harrison, Peggy Greer, LaVerne Buffum, Patricia Clark, and Lita Mae Morgan.

Keith Bailey. president: Wanda Eastman, vice-president: Eleanor Albright, secretary, led the Die Bes- tes to a colossal finish in 1942. Win- ners in the ticket sale were Eleanor Albright, Pat Hoover, and Jim Thompson. Under the direction of Thelma Bussard. You're Telling Me was presented Oct. 16-17 with the following cast: Marcella Stewart. Pat Hoover, Eleanor All,1rig'ht, Margaret Buss, Betty Boyer,Gordon Hillhouse, Fred Conner, Keith Bail-ay, Norna Rourds, and Jack Ielonnold. Clarence Brannum, Marty Side- ner, Joe Krafels, Jim Shipp, Joe Thornton. Kenneth Furlow, Gene M1-rphis, Wayne Finney, Bill Hus- sell, Keith Bailey, Bill King, and Jim Barnthouse made up the basket- ball team. With Dick Hoover, Ty Powers, Keith Bailey, and Garland Prater composing boys' team, and with Le- ota Oliver, Wanda Shirley, Jerry Parker, and Hope Cheesman on gil ls' team, Die Bestes tied for first place with the Alphas in tennis hon- ors. The Die Beste Hoedown was held May 4 at Island park. Die Bestes going out for track are Joe Thornton, Kenneth Furlow, Homer Higdon: forensics, Wanda Land: golf, Clarence Bran- num,Ma1'tin Sidener,Jim Thompson, music, Bob Logsdon, Hope Chees- inan, Don Faust, Eleanor Albright, Keith Bailey, Don Hudson, Heihf rt Hawk Jr,, Wanda Stiner, and Dorothy Merriam.
