Viking Speakers gesture emphatically, speak persuasively, employ sound reasoning, and the re- sultsPconvinced audiences. During the 19-11-42 season Coach Wayne Brit- ton's teams participated in ten debate tournaments and chalked up a record of two championships, a tie for second, a tie for third, and fifth place in the state. Spirited debates rang out on the question, Re- solved: That as a permanent policy every able- bodied male citizen in the United States should be required to have one year of full-time military training before attaining the present draft age. Besides attending the annual debate institute at Arkansas City, the debaters attended nine tour- naments, including the state tourney at Lawrence, the Ark Valley contest at Wichita, the District tournament held here, and tourneys at Enid, Coffey- ville, Medicine Lodge, Wichita East, Wellington, and Emporia. Winning the District tournament were two teams composed of Pat Graham and Jerry Adams, affirmative: Annabelle Meek and Wade Fite, neg- ative. These teams with Penrose Albright, alternate. tied for second in the Ark Valley tournament at Friends university and with Jane Gary, alternate, placed fifth in the state at Lawrence. Three teams composed of Annabelle Meek, Wade Fite. Pat Graham, Jerry Adams, Wanda Land, and Jane Gary attended the tournament at the college of Emporia where Winfield tied for third. Taking the Medicine Lodge tournament by win- ning 12 out of 15 debates were I.J. Thomas, M. All- ison, J. Alloway, W. Land, N. Cranston, and B. Anderson. Annabelle Meek and Pat Graham were highest ranking girl speakers at the Ark Valley tournament. Pat won first in oratory and Annabelle third in ex- temporaneous speaking at the speech tournament held at Phillips university in November. Others attending the various tournaments in- clude J. Allen, J. Peterson, K. Thomas, P. Oster- hout, and J. Douglas. RESOL ED
