As the years will pass and mefnories will fade, you begin to realize that not enough attention was given to the every- day occurrences. In an attempt to recog- nize these often forgotten moments of student life, The General staff has chosen llLife in General as the theme for the 1986 yearbook. Many events outside of schooltime and the classroom influence the life of the student. Included in the sections of this yearbook are not only accounts of what went on during school, but after a school day and after a school year. The staff and I would like to invite you to open, look, enjoy, and close this seventh volume of The General, keeping in mind that this book was conceived, designed, and concluded all for you, the student body of Winfield High School. Sincerly, Cassy Salgado Editor iLeftl Amber Kuhl enjoys the first days of spring. Opening 1 The World in General During the 1985-86 school year, stu- dents at WHS saw many news happenings around the county, state, country, and the world. News happenings on the county level included a change in the county grading policy and a new superintendent of Put- nam County Schools. tBottom lefD Steve Baldwin was named new superintendent replacing Kenneth Higginbotham. On the state level, students enjoyed the recognition the school received for being the AA State Champs in football. They also felt sorrow for those whose belongings were lost in the WV floods. Other things that happened around the state were the raising of the drinking age from 18 to 21 and the chemical leaks tTopt which caused a scare in the Kan- awha Valley. Around the nation students saw the space shuttle disaster which killed seven people. It would have been the first time a civilian tteachert was to be in space. Problems of drugs in pro sports and money raised during charity concerts, such as Farm Aid, were all part of the news scene this year. Also in the news was the attempt by Coca-Cola to change its formula, resulting in New and Classic Coke. The election in the Philippines, South African riots, terrorist attacks on foreign airports and public places, and the disas- ter of Chernoybol tMiddlet , a nuclear power plant in Russia, were just a few happenings that made the news headlines during the school year. Everyone worried about being popular and new classes. As the year progressed, they learned the routine. Sophomores returned to the routine. Guys got to play varsity sports, and girls got to try out for cheerleading. Most finally got their licenses. Juniors had a busy year. They prepared for the prom, took the ACT, and thought about college. Anticipation was the key word for the senior class. During their last year they enjoyed the prom, graduation, and senior trip and planned their futures. Classes 5 SENIORS As the class of 1986 will look back upon their senior year, the things that will be remembered most are what affected them as individuals. The size of the class decreased' as the year progressed because students dropped out or failed to meet academic require- ments. The changes that went into effect this year had the best interest of the students in mind, but some conflicts rose between those changes and what the students wanted. The new county dress code included the length of shorts and skirts, which had to reach the mid- Brenda Faye Armstead 6 Seniors thigh. Tank tops and see through or cut-off shirts were not allowed. This was also the last year that seniors were allowed to leave after half a day. Homecoming tfence decorationl and assemblies were omitted from the schedule in order to meet the stiff, new requirements set by the state attendance policy. tSeated belowl Dean Vaughan - President and John MCMorrough - Vice President tStandingl Richie Brewer - Treasurer and Rhonda Stinespring - Secretary. The 1985-86 year, in many studentsl view, has been especially good. A large part of the year was devoted to social growth and development. Anger, love, sensa- tivity and respect for those around us made us realize the importance of our friends. Plans for the future were made for some, while others took one day at a time. The team members showed a lot of enthusiasm and skill for being such young players. One possible rea- son for their success was the experience gained playing football together in middle school. At the beginning of the season, I was surprised tat how well the team playedi, but near the end of the season when I knew what the team could do, I was a little disappointed with our performance? said Tammy White, co-captain. The other co- captain was Karen Crosier. The Lady Generals ended their season with a 10 and 11 record, placing second in the countywtournament. Tammy White, Kim Clark, and Karen Crosier were named to the all county team. They were also named to the all conference team along with Lee Ann Melton. One of the more exciting games of the season was against Pt. Pleasant at Win- field. It was a close game from the very beginning. In the final seconds of the game, with Winfield down by one point, Tammy White hit two free throws to give the Lady Generals the win. During one stretch of the season the Generals had many problems with injuries to key players. Crutches seemed to be the fashion among the girls this year. Coach Tribble had this to say about his team, uI was pleased with the perform- ance of the entire team. We were at a disadvantage in size in nearly every game, but we made up for it with heart and hustle. Our two seniors, Tammy and Karen, will be greatly missed. tKneelingl Ginger Kester, Darla Anderson, Lee Ann Melton, Kare Crosier, Sheri Kester, Kristi Justice, Leslie Downing, and Jackie Chamber 94 lain tStandingi Shannon Craigo, Connie Smith, Paula Gibson, Criss DuVall, Kim Clark, Tammy White, Carrie Boucher and Coach Charli Tribble Top 1er Kim Clark attempts to drive around a Hurricane defender during the county tournament. After losing their first six games, the team won their next eight out of eleven. According to Coach Sumner, those games were not only won by skill and ability, but also by hard work and sheer persistence. The mem- bers of this yearis team did not put in the many hours of practice merely for the thrill of winning, but for the enjoy- ment of playing the game. Coach Sumner said the team really had uno problemsii and this yearis obvious highlight for him was the win over Hurricane. This season the players had their first chance during high school to show their skills and abilities. But they saw their hopes come to an end after getting beat in the regionals by Wayne. After previously losing the first game of the sectionals, the team fought back hard to win and go on to the regionals. Although they didntt win first in the states, they will always be champions in our eyes. What some thought would be a rebuilding year turned out to be a state championship season. The Generals were undefeated in football. The first two playoff games were held at Winfield. The first game was a rematch against the Poca Dots. The Gens beat them 47-14 after having beaten them 27-0 earlier. Next the Gens defeated Tucker County 12-0. In the championship game, held at Laidley Field in Charleston, we beat Buffalo Wayne 28-6.
