Even though you have only touched our lives for a moment, you have left a great impression of friendship in our hearts and minds. You have influenced our spirit and helped us reach some of our goals. We think of you often and thank you for the love you have shown. IN DEDICATION BRUCE OLSON CICERO HORKEY 4 VICE-PRESIDENT - VICKI PETERSON, SECRETARY-TREASURER - PAM HANSON, PRESIDENT - DAVE DESUTTER OUR CLASS Now as our years at W.A.H.S. end Our graduation separates us as friends. We are starting a new life, one much different from our old life at W.A.H.S. We can only hope that we succeed as well in this new life as we did in our first. As we look toward the future, we remember the past. The books, the tests, the teachers, the classmates, and especially the close friends who were important to our high school lives will never be forgotten. The future looks bright for we are ready. The class of '76 has chosen the motto, Let anyone who quits striving for excellence move over for those of us who will not. The Red Rose is our class flower and Dark Blue and Gold are our class colors. The Spirit of '76 lives on forever! Recalling through memories of past school years, We remember experiencing both good times and fears. Together we learned to tie our shoes And how to accept the fact that sometimes we'll lose. We could look back and shed a tear For the W.A.H.S. halls will not be filled with '76 cheer! But the development of our brains And all of those growing pains Have taught us to view the past in happiness Striving to make our present the best. Our teachers, as artists, took us like new clay Forming us into a fine art display! Although our W.A.H.S. memories with us will stay; Our final memory will be graduation day. Our many disappointments and fears Which once were overcome by childish laughter and cheers Now are bigger problems which keep us aware; They're easier to take when there's someone to care. Goodbye my friend. But don't think of our graduation as the end... 8 -Janet D. SANDRA WILKIN MARGARET WINKEL KIM WILSON RHONDA WOOD Roy (Trigger) Bremnes-18 years old, dark brown hair, blue eyes, 5'8 tall and 136 pounds (when he's not starving for wrestling!!). Our thanks to the Friends of Foreign Students for sponsoring another Norsky for us from Sortland, Norway. Roy is staying with the Duane Amess family. It seems that his brother Dick started calling him Trigger, (does it have anything to do with Roy Rogers??) and it just stuck. Actually, Roy's home town in Norway is Andenes, found on an island surrounded by mountains and fjords. He is the oldest child in his family, which consists of five brothers, two sisters, mother and father. He had never left Norway before coming here to Windom and he said that he was a little afraid that people here wouldn't be friendly. That sure was the wrong idea! Roy is enjoying his stay here very much, with all his countless friends. This year in school, Roy has taken Driver's Ed., Cultural Dimensions, U.S. History, Physics, English 12, and Senior Choir. Does he like WAHS? I really like not having so much homework as we do back home'! Roy approves of our school very much. One thing that he likes alot is the fact that sports, choir, band, etc., are connected with school- that isn't possible in Norway. As a result, Roy was in Cross Country and wrestling, maybe track or tennis. What an asset to our guy's teams! Roy is very interested in photography, and you can find him in Camera Club, taking pictures for the Tatler and Eagle. Besides being involved with many school activities, Roy is a regular at the ALC, where he sings in the choir and Maranatha. He really likes the adult Sunday School classes, too. As can be expected of a Norwegian, Roy loves winter, and he is a speed ice skater and a cross country skier in his spare time. Roy stuffs himself with foods such as hamburgers, pizza, turkey, and coffee, which are his favorite foods here. One thing that he misses is eating alot of fish. When Roy returns to Norway, he'll have one more year of school at the Sortland Gymnas. He likes science and math. Some day he wants to either be a teacher, or study theology. Roy is kept so busy here, that he's never homesick. He does write home every week though. Will we ever see him again? Roy wants to come back to the U.S. some day. He wants to do alot more traveling. Best of luck always, Roy!! 29 CHIAKI KATO This year Windom has the pleasure of entertaining a lovely exchange student from Japan. Chiaki Kato came to us through a Youth For Understanding Program. Chiaki left her city of Nagoya and her family to come to the U.S. for a year. Nagoya is a large city about 150 miles north of Tokyo. Her family consists of her mother, who writes for a newspaper, her older sister, her grandmother and her grandfather. She says she has traveled before but never outside of Japan. In Japan Chiaki attends a Catholic all-girl school. The length of the school day is as long as ours, but she must go to school on Saturdays also. She finds our long weekends more to her liking. Many interests occupy Chiaki's time. They include watching T.V., listening to records, reading novels, and eating. She especially enjoys music and art and she has shown herself to be quite talented in these areas. Chiaki is becoming rapidly Americanized—hamburgers are one of her favorite American foods. She likes most of the new foods she's encountered, not pickles or school hot lunch. The landscape and the people of this area have impressed Chiaki. She is extremely excited about seeing lots of snow. Perhaps she'll change her mind after experiencing a Minnesota winter! As for school, Chiaki giggled, I like English. It's funny...and Mr. Lindaman is funny! She is taking a variety of other classes. When Chiaki returns to Japan, she will complete her final year of high school. Following that, she hopes to go to college. She would like to study languages—Japanese and English. Chiaki is living with the John Galles on River Road. They are as pleased to have her here as is the rest of Windom. We will all miss Chiaki when she leaves. TRUDE OLSEN The Land of the Midnight Sun sends Windom another of her native beauties. Seventeen year old Trude Olsen comes to us from Sortland. Travel is no stranger to Trude. In fact, she came to Windom with her fami- ly on an exchange program seven years ago. She has also lived in other exotic places like Africa and Norway! Trude says that she likes Windom and enjoys staying with the Melvin Wojahns. Despite this, she does miss her family which consists of a brother, sister and her parents. In the Sortland Gymnas, classes are much harder than here. Trude has chosen to prove this by taking several senior claseses. She is successfully tackling English 12, Pre-Calculus, Physics, Drivers Ed. American History and Choir. She is also one of this years wrestling managers. She says that they have wrestling in Norway but she never really understood the sport. She's enthusiastic about getting the opportunity to help promote wrestling while learning more about it. Two of her secret passions are pizza and cheese curls. She didn't say whether she liked or disliked the American concepts of dating. She only said that in Norway you don't date and no one cruises around at night; you walk! Her plans for the future include finishing two more years at the gymnas. After this she hopes to return to the United States. What's she planning to do here? Get married! 31 UNDERCLASSMEN VICE-PRESIDENT: KITTY RIEBE, PRESIDENT: WES SWEIGARD, SECRETARY-TREASURER: BETTY NELSON THE JUNIOR CLASS With only one year of High School remaining, we feel the decision-making years are just beginning. We have a short time left before we are on our own to face the world and do our part in making the world a better place in which to live. College will be one of the first questions that we must answer. The Junior Class is ready to face the problems which lie in front of them. We will make the most of our one remaining year to prepare us for the long road ahead. }4 JUNIOR CLASS PLAY The Jr, Class Play, You Can't Take It With You , was without a doubt the most fantastic thing that has hit Southwestern Minnesota. The actors and actresses expressed themselves in a way never to be duplicated by man. To summarize the play in short, it went like this: A wacky family that made fire-works, a little old man that came one day and just stayed for 8 years, their daughter who fell madly in love with a son of the head of a huge corporation were all having dinner one night. As the boy's rich parents were about to leave, the Dept, of Justice broke in and they all spent the night in jail. But things got better and the girl and boy got married and lived happily ever after. These are the crazy cast members who made the play a great success: Jan Hoffmeister M ike Zinck Mike Quevli Tim Rand Mike Hustad Kate Schneider Cheryl Weiland Dan Moe Natalie Nystuen Jody Fuller Wes Sweigard Mark Johnson Virgil Zunkel Tory Blomberg Jeff Westgor Eric Amundson Dale Friesen In closing, the members of the the lights and sound crew. EAGLE STAFF Randy Knuth, Business Manager; Vicki Peterson, Editor; Kate Schneider, Assistant Editor; Mr. Rhoda, Advisor. Compiling the 1976 yearbook appeared to be an endless task from the beginning. There were many frantic moments: trying to locate a certain picture that you had seen somewhere, not being able to find an eraser after your typewriter had gone berserk, and asking everyone in the commons if they could identify the picture of a freshmen apparently unknown to the whole school. Through the hard work of typists, writers, and photographers we met our deadlines. An a especial- ly a big thank you goes out to Mr. Rhoda for all his patience and understanding in teaching us the mechanics of putting a yearbook together. Many thanks to the entire staff, camera club, and every- one else who helped in making the 1976 Eagle a success. Long after the hard work is forgotten, the memories of all the fun we had together, especially on those Saturday morning cram sessions, will re- main. ROW 1: N. Nystuen, L. Arness, L. Nagorske, R. TATLER STAFF The Tatler is not just a monthly school news- paper, but a reflection of all school life. This year we tried to highlight student interest by adding a regular Heap of the Month feature. Working on the staff has been very busy at times, but also rewarding. The task could not be completed without thanking those who helped us so much. We must thank Gerrie Anderson and the Citi- zen because with out the help received from them none of this would have been possible. The camera club, who furnished us with superb pictures, and the work of dedicated typists and reporters was greatly appreciated in meeting those never ending deadlines. The staff sincerely hopes that we gave captured a little of you throughout the year, and that you enjoyed reading the Tatler as much as we did put- ting it together. ROW 1: N. Nystuen, L. Its main purpose is to promote theatre and speech activities. The annual Speech Club Christmas Play was A King is Born, written and directed by Mr. Lindaman. It was presented to the elementary schools and the reaction it received proved its success. Speech Club also sponsors the trip to the Gutherie each year. We saw the Shakespearean play Measure for Measure. This is always a unique educational experience and lots of fun. The Variety Show gives members of the student body a chance to establish their individual talents. It is a production that will be long remembered. The parties at Mr. Lindaman's farm were among the high lights of this year. CANDYSTRIPERS The WAHS candystripers are a group of friendly girls who volunteer their services at the Sogge Home and hospital. You could ay that their pay is the many people they get to know. They have a monthly meet- ing and work at their stations weekly for Vh hours. If ever you find yourself in the hospital, just look for a candystriper to brighten your day. Some of the highlights of this year have been the Chile Supper and singing on KEYC T.V. at Christmas time. The favorite songs of the year were Ye Followers of the Lamb , And I Remember , Messiah , Cresent Noon , Hold my Mule , and Balulalow . We are all looking forward to our tour this spring. Well look no further. The Golden Eagle Band is probably the most active organization at WAHS. During the summer months the band meets once a week to prepare for their appearances in area parades. In the fall the band is hard at work on football half- time performances and the Fall Band Concert. The pep band plays for basketball games. The stage band also makes various showings at concerts, the Miss Windom Pageant, and Homecoming Coronations. The Clinic Concert, the Pops Concert and the State Music Contests fill the remainder of the school year. Then the entire cycle begins again. The year contains alot of long hours, self-sacrifice, and hectic moments. But if you ask any member, I'm sure that they will tell you that band is fun and enjoyable too. The Seniors sincerely wish all future members lots of best wishes (and lots of luck). 74 ROW 1: K. Schneider, K. Harrington, B. Flatgard, D. Eike, A. Reed, M. Bartosh, J. Schaffer. ROW 2: C. Jans. ORCHESTRA There exists a group in our school which little is known about. This is the Sr. High orchestra, a close-knit group of musicians. The orchestra has four concerts and makes other public appearances throughout the year. Their wide repertoire ranges from chamber to pop music. In orchestra there are many wonders to behold . . . Second violins that chronically go out of tune, the everlasting (but friendly) feud between violins and violas, a giddy cello section, alumni days (when former orchestra members come back), and so on. Perhaps the best word to describe orchestra is unique. As there is a large group of underclassmen, it appears that it will continue to be so. 79 ROW 1: I. Wassenaar, K. Harrington, Miss Fritzke, T. LETTER WINNER’S CLUB Letterwinner's Club is one of the largest clubs in the school. Yet it is probably one of the least heard. This is one organization where a person of any grade is able to participate. Contrary to what is believed, the Letterwinner's Club is very active. It sells concessions at the baseball park all summer. It also sponsors a batting cage at the county fair. This year the Letterwinner's Club is under the capable leadership of Jeff Fredin, president; Bob Hanson, vice-president; Betty Nelson, secretary-treasurer. 86 ROW 1: M. Sweeney, R. Eucken, J. The high point of the week was coronation on Friday morning when this year's royalty, Vicki Peterson and Jeff Fredin, were crowned. Their court consisted of Laurie Ling, Linda Beck, Maureen Yonker, Pam Hanson, Roger Turner, Tim Wiens, Scott Holmen and Jim Anderson. Genni Steele and Greg Frederickson were mistress and master of ceremonies at the event whose theme was Seasons in the Sun . Many activities made for a fun-filled week. The traditional Powder Puff football game was played Monday night. Tuesday was Rock and Roll is Here to Stay Day . Everyone dressed 50's style, and there was a sock hop in the gym that night. On Wednesday stu- dents dressed backwards for Backwards Day . Thursday was Blue and Gold Day . The homecoming football game was played against Worthington on Friday night. Windom was victorious 23 to 13. The memorable week concluded with a dance featuring Mariah after the game. 106 WINTER HOMECOMING Terry Metz and Twyla Smith were crowned Mr. Miss Pep of Winter Celebration on Thursday morning, February 5. Other mem- bers of the royal court were Lori Nagorske, Lynn Schmidt, Genni Steels, Deb Stevens, Dan Carpenter, Bruce Defries, Ron Hooge, and Scott Rahn. Margaret Winkel and Gary Grunewald were emcees. The skits, decorations, and music by the stage band did a smashing job of portraying the theme Make Me Smile . That evening, our wrestling squad proved victorious, beating Lakefield by a score of 27-21. Seventh hour Friday, the annual Seniors vs. Faculty basketball game was played. The Seniors dumped the Faculty for the second straight year, 44-40. Our basketball team chalked up another win Friday night, defeating Worthington 65-57. Following the game everyone enjoyed the dance, even though the band, Case , was a little late! 108 ROW 1: M. Johnson, R. Frederickson, M. Quevli, T. Mielke. ROW 2: D. Stevens, K. Miller, Mrs, Campbell, K. Reid. ONE ACT PLAY This year the one-act play, directed by Mrs. Campbell, presented Aria De Capo , written by Edna St. Vincent Millay. Under the prompting of Cothurnus the muse of tragedy, two shepherds interupt a harlequinade, innocently kill each other, and are again supervised by the harlequinade. As you can see it is a play within 2 plays. The props were not the important factor in the play but the make-up and costumes were. The make-up and costumes were very elaborate on some of the characters. The names of the actors and their parts follow: Pierrot: Mark Johnson Columbine: Deb Stevens Corydon: Mike Quevli Thirthus: Rick Frederickson Cothurnus: Tom Mielke Student directors were Kevin Miller and Kathy Reid. The drama was presented at the District Drama contest in Windom in January 23 at which Jackson won first place with an A rating and Windom got alternate with an A rating. Mike Quevli and Rick Frederickson got best actor award at District. 110 V____________ .V • •V “ r • « • • . '.■ 1 « . .
