The objectives of The Victory Corps are: the training of youth ior that War service which Will come after they leave school, and the active partici- pation oi youth in the community war eitort while they are still in school. The corps also fosters and promotes the guidance into critical services and occupations, physical fitness programs, competence in science and mathe- matics, and pre-flight training in aeronautics. Windber High has several hundred students enrolled for general mem- bership in this war program. There are one hundred and six boys registered for the voluntary military drill, which is one of the branches of the corps. The drill takes place every Thursday night at Recreation Hall, under the direction oi Ioseph Washko and C. H. Fitzsimmons, assisted by Iohn McDon- ald and E. Lindstrom. Another service rendered by the Victory Corps in Windber High School is pre-flight training in aeronautics which is under the direction of Mr. Beam. The new class met with much interest and enthusiasm. At the beginning of the year, each student was taken for an airplane ride by Mr. Booser. This was a thrilling experience for all. Tests in aeronautics are sent by the government and must be success- fully passed by each student before completion of the course. This course is the same as the pre-flight course given by the army and navy. The aeronautics course is divided into five parts: Learning to Fly, Aerodynamics, Navigation, Meteorology, Aids and Safeguards. 22 14 Glad Row 1-Burgess, Dunmire, Hordubcxy, Cartica, Custer, Holsopple. This Was the fourth consecutive year for the popular local lad, Ioe Gates, to head Windber's coaching staff. Ray Iones, assistant coach, proved him- self more than capable in helping to develop the outstanding team that was Windber's in l942. After a month of hard practice at camp and a week or two of it at home, the Gates-Iones combination began to develop into what was to prove an unbeatable Windber High eleven. Coach Gates leaves Windber this year to head Greensburg's coaching staff. It is with regret that Windber students and fans see him go. To faculty manager, Richard Mickel, Windber fans owe a hearty vote of thanks for the excellent schedule of sports events with which he provided them this year. ' 32 a 5' In the opening game of the season, Shade Township journeyed to Wind- ber to be trounced by an overwhelming score. The game ended with Wind- ber on top 64-U. Inspired by their first victory, Windber's Ramblers then swamped Pitts- burgh Central Catholic High School at Delaney Field. The final statistics read: Windber 40-Pittsburgh 0. An almost record breaking crowd of Windber students and townspeople saw Windber take their third straight victory by rolling over the Conemaugh Iron Horses to the tune of 41-5. Windber's team took its first journey of the season by going to Portage to meet the Bulldogs. Playing the kind of ball that was to make this a year to remember, the Ramblers rolled up the tidy score of 34-6 against the hard hitting Portage team. ' In the highlight game of the season, Gate's warriors met the mighty men of Troy, the highly touted Iohnstown eleven. Iohnstown and Windber fans jammed the Point Stadium 17,000 strong. Both teams displayed re- markable brands of football, but after Iack Lochrie, Windber lineman, broke through in the first play of the game to snatch a fumble and race for pay dirt, Iohnstown's number was up. The final score read Windber 20- Iohnstown 13. Windber next traveled to Altoona to meet their ancient rivals, the Moun- tain Lions, who had been roaring through a very successful season. With hearts set on victory, the Ramblers set out to tame the roar to a mere bark. Again a lineman, Iim Campitell, broke through enemy territory to snatch a pass and set Windber on the sunny side of the final tally. At the final whistle the score stood: Windber 13-Altoona 7. In their next encounter, the Windberites met Peanie Smith's Indians. The final score showed that the boys from Conemaugh Township were no match for the Gates-Iones combination. Climaxing a thrill studded season, Windber rolls over the Crimson Crushers from Iohnstown Catholic High. The score: Windber 33-Iohnstown Catholic U. ' Bidding adieu to their scholastic pigskin careers this year are ten seniors and three juniors: co-captains Torquato and Kaplan, Lochrie, Campitell, Katchmeric, Popelich, Antalosky, Gibson, Layland, and Boyko, seniors: and Thomas, Polansky, and Yocca, juniors. Ray Scare Torquato, a letterman for three years, has closed a career that any high school boy might well be proud of. Early in his football exper- ience, Ray showed signs of outstanding ability as a lineman. He settled 33 aaaidall down to the position of center which he held for the tour seasons that he played for Windber. Although he received a knee injury this year, Torquato played steadily until he brought down the curtain on his career at the end of the season. Pete Kaplan, shitty end of the Windber combination, led the team in scoring honors. He did most of Windber's extra point kicking, and his trusty toe added many a point to the Windber tally. Kaplan, too, would have been a three letter man, but he barely missed his award in his sophomore year. Ioe Katchmeric, end, played a real brand of football for Windber all of the time that he was a member of the squad. He was a specialist at break- ing up plays and smashing through to recover fumbles. Iack Layland, Paul Antalosky, and Andy Boyko saw a great deal of action and added much to the strength of Windber's unbeaten eleven. Iim Thomas, first string blocking back, will not be eligible for play next year. Thomas did a fine job throughout the season. playing the kind of ball that included everything from intercepting passes to broken field running.
