He joined the army two weeks afterjihe f graduated from high school, and senfed for twleveyears before' i retiring as a warrant officer. Mr. Monroe received his Bachelors ' degree from Humboldt State University in California, andhisr llf S Masters degree from San' Diego State. Mr. Monroe started teaching in 1989, and has taught in many parts of the United States and overseas. His work hasttaken him to schools in Ohio, Massachu- setts, Florida, California, Korea, Canada, and Saudi Arabia before he decided to come to The Winchendon School in September of 2000. Victor Monroe is an unique individual, he is both friend and mentor to his colleagues. His students respect and trust him, and they look to him for support in all aspects of their lives. Mr. Monroe is someone who touches every life he enters, and we are fortunate' to have him at The Winchendon School. f '+Hung Chun Chang '03 . ' There are over six billion people on this planet. Two hundred and eighty million live in the United States, and there are representatives from every culture among them. Diversity is the key element to the quality ot education and overall experience at The Winchendon School. There are over ten languages that are spoken fluently here. Over fifty percent ofthe population is international students. The wonderful mix of students that reside on a central campus incorporates many divergentlas- pects of student life. Having so many diverse stu- dents produces a feeling of a miniature NYC, a melting pot. Students here get a sense of some- thing that most other students dont get to experi- ence until college, and even then it is not a guar- antee. The receptive attitude that students gain as the years progress is incredible. . - David Rotberg PG LLM. -Q,-1, w ' fi, gas.:-5: g-as H-55.-,gg-.,,,,f5,3g:2mA 5 'Eg' J- tis Z s fe fd? William LaBelIe The Wlnchendon School 172 Ash Street, Winchendon, Massachusetts 01475-1700 Telephone: 978-297-1223 FAX: 978-297-0911 Dear Class of 2003, There is a Chinese blessing Cor maybe a cursel that says, May you live in interesting times . You do! Not only are these interesting times, they are revolutionary. Think of some of the events that have occurred in your short lifetime. We have seen the cracking of the human genome, which may be the most significant scientific undertaking - ever. We have tracked other universes and have made astounding astronomical discoveries through the use of the Hubbel telescope. We have seen the break up of the U.S.S.R. We have seen telecommunications and data manipulation improve almost beyond imagination through the continuous development of computers, the Internet and wireless technology. We have witnessed the worst attack ever by foreign enemies on American soil. Surely, there will continue to be enormous changes, discoveries and events in our lives. We need to keep it all in perspective and manage our own lives well. I urge you to learn about and participate fully in the discoveries, events and decisions to come. You need to be educated in the broadest sense. You need to gain sufficient knowledge about what is going on in the world to be able to be an effective citizen. You need to be thoughtful and discerning. I urge you also to hold to strong values. Stay close to your family. Do meaningful and satisfying work. Help those who need help. Be honest and trustworthy. I am confident that we have started you on your way to responsible citizenship and parenthood. Keep in touch. Let us know how you are doing. If you ever need help, we will be here for you! Mrs. LaBel1e and I wish you Godspeed. Sincerely, . , - J. William LaBelle HEADMASTER . A ,.,. 3 on the y has been a fulfilling experience. We ver many obstacles. I was always on my toes, trying to get prepared for classes, catching up with my assignments, participating in athletic I practices and completing college applications. When I be- came a senior, I found the work tiresome and demanding, however, I achieved more than I expected. - Seung Tal Kim, '03 I have spent three years at Winchendon, whichis the longest period of time I have spent anywhere except my homeland. At Winchendon, I have met so many people from so many different countries, and it is nice to have many friends of various nationalities. My friends and I learn from each other and we shared good times at school. If it weren't for Winchendon, I would , not have found out that I could be independent of my parents or that I could be a mature person. Winchendon is a place full of my best memories and I will never forget it. - Yung-Ting Tang, '03 I have been in the U.S. for almost five years, and my life has changed in many ways since I have come here. I had lived in Chicago and attended school there before I came to Winchendon. I still remember the first day I came here, all of the things at Winchendon came as a surprise to me. I had a lot of fun discovering many fresh and new things that I had not found in Chicago. There, I was a typical Korean girl who was shy in public and too passive to do any work. However, the decision to come to Winchendon has given me a totally new life. I now enjoy talking and being active in a lot of ways, full of confidence. - Ji-Hyun Park '03 lVIy experience at The Winchendon School has mostly ' l taught me that you can succeed in anything in which you Tput forth the effort. lt has also helped me greatly in mang-jgg lll aging and organizing lll time, and doing it in a well- mannered fashion. Being a girl atsthe school has beeenslagjg memorable experience. ilof s i - Caroline Dawson 503 I if The Winchendon School has been a mind-opening experience. The school embraces individuality and creativity. A sense ef responsibility and structure have been iglb instilled in me. This school ,gives so much that we all take away as part of ourselves. Youilgrowlup to be a better person through the people you meet here. We wiI l all leave with something that we treasure. . ' - David Flotberg PG The Winchendon School has been the biggest to my' selffconfidence that I have ever experienced. Inf school, l was an everyday slacker who received sophomore year when I failed the majority of my classeel came to Winchendon without ever having felt a sense of s..y y achievement and I will leave knowing what success is all ytlegrr gg about. The only hard part was leaving my family back horney and asslimiiliating to a new environment. The school has helped to change my study habits and has cured me of any laziness that I may have possessed, and for that l am thank- I gygy ful. - TJ White '03 HL! During study hall, he noticed that you were wearing a black ski hat pulled down over your ears. He entered your room and ordered you to remove the hat, but you ignored him. After repeating his request three more limes, Mr. Rosenthal grabbed the hat and pulled it from your head. Immediately, you began to yell and scream. disrupting the other students in study hall. Evidently, you hadjust pierced both of your ears with safety pins, and you were covering the holes with your ski hat. When Mr. Rosenthal removed the hat. both safety pins became caught in the material, causing pain and bleeding. You demanded that you be taken to the hospital, but Mr. Rosenthal said, Don't be a baby-stay in your seat and finish study hall. Mr. Plank, an administrator who was passing through the dormitory. told you to be quiet and finish your math homework. You responded that you had already finished it. but he said, just do the next set! Youjumped to your feet and ran down the hallway. shrieking, l hate Saxon math! Jason. this behavior is unacceptable. Due to your previous probation tlor sneaking into Mr. Johnson's apartment and killing his lizards! l am now placing you on general probation. This means that any major offense that you commit from now on will result in your expulsion. unless you commit one before you get this letter-that would be a freebie . Please reread your student handbook in order to remind yourself which offenses are major offenses. For example, filling up a water bottle with soda in the dining hall. entering the out door. leaving the cafeteria with a sandwich, leaving your shirt untucked, moving your firmiture, or leaving your books in the main hallway would each result in your dismissal. ln addition to your probation, l am requiring you to serve two weekends of Saturday and Sunday moming work duty. Please meet the administrator on duty at 9 AM in the area next to the student mailboxes. lf you fail to appear at this time. a faculty member will come to your room and drag you out of bed by your ear. Please follow ALL ofthe rules from now on. l Sincerely. Q, Elliot C. Harvey Dean of Students ' ' ZX , 5 . Qs, , .
