The Winchendon School Ash Street, Winchendon, Massachusetts 0147 5 Telephone: 508 -297- 1223 Fax: 508-297-0911 j.Wi11iam LaBelle Headmaster 1 September 22, 1997 Dear Members of the Class of 1998, Each year at this time it is my task to write some parting words of advice. It seems that there are certain constants . Set goals, work hard, be fair, be faithful, be honest, be nice! All of these are important and usually exhorted. There are a few other ideas that l would like to mention that are not always brought forth. This has become an age of victimization . lt has become too easy to make an excuse. l couldn't do it because l'm lFilI in the blank!! Don't fall victim to victimization. Be accountable! It has also become an age of narcissistic entitlement and relativism. l deserve because I am ! My ideas and answers are as good as anyone else's . May I suggest that you deserve only what you earn. There is not space here for me to delve into why everyone's ideas and answers are not equally good, but trust me, they are not! When you are right, persevere. Don't give into those who are operating from less ability, less experience or less knowledge. Don't be timid, but don't be impolite. Propriety and good manners are important. Lastly, there seems to be an overemphasis lately on promoting self esteem at the expense of substance and accountability. Praise is nice, but do not expect or dwell on it. If you are really secure, you do not need it. Qu know when you have done a good job! If you turn a sow's ear into a silk purse you will know it. What others say or don't say is not really important. You did it! Relish the accomplishment! As you leave Winchendon, be proud of your accomplishments. Build on them. Build on your strengths and strengthen your weaknesses. On behalf of the faculty, Mrs. LaBelle and I wish you success, happiness and God speed! incerely, ,K idx J. William LaBelle HEADMASTER L , I
