A History . . . In Dexter, Maine there was a school named The Wassookeag School. It was founded by Lloyd Harvey Hatch in 1926. Wassookeag was filled with students who had the potential to succeed, but needed that extra push and caring attention from faculty in order to do so. The students succeeded and moved on to colleges of their choice. In the 1950's the school was moved to Newport, Rhode Island, which meant that the school could have a larger enrollment and better facilities. The school's name was changed to The Hatch School. Financial difficulties occurred and in order to remedy this, the Board of Trustees was reorganized in 1958. Mr. Hatch retired in 1959 and a new headmaster, Mr. Marr, took over the role. The school was then moved to its current location. The school was reestablished in Winchendon, Massachusetts from which it gets the name it still holds today. Once the school moved, the enrollment hit a peak of 154 students. Soon after, the enrollment declined significantly. Mr. Marr then retired and a third headmaster was brought in. It was 1974 when Mr. Posich took over Mr. Marr's position. He turned the school around and enrollment was on the rise. In 1982, Mr. Posich passed away and Mr. Otto took over as acting headmaster for a year and a half before a new full- time headmaster could be found. Mr. Samborski was appointed the new headmaster.
