Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity George Smith Patt Winchendon School Winchendon, MA Cn this, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Winchendon School, the senior class dedicates with great pride the 1986 Vestigia to The Winchendon Family, a sustaining fellowship of trustees, headmasters, faculty and staff, parents, friends, students, and most especially alumni. It is because of your steadfast devotion, enduring loyalty and patience, care and guidance that our potential will be achieved. What we are today and what we must become tomorrow has in a very measurable way been shaped by your efforts. As is customary with a traditional yearbook dedication, we the Class of 1986 would like to recognize an individual member of The Winchendon School family. To Mr. John Foster, whose unselfish personality has helped us to realize that we must push ourselves in order to achieve success and yet at times be able to just step back and laugh, we wish to say, thanks for everything. E I Contents I Faculty Underclassmen t 11 27 I Seniors Sports ss 97 ' Events Dorms 129 H59 The Winchendon School A Brief History The Wassookeag School of Dexter, Maine, founded by Lloyd Harvey Hatch in 1926 was the forerunner of today's Winchendon School. It was small in number and tutorial in na- ture, maintaining a small faculty-to- student ratio. Those students who attended the school possessed the potential for academic success, but who for one reason or another had failed to develop this latent ability. Thus, the school sought to give the attention and close personal super- vision which the founders thought were prerequisites to academic success. Gaining in reputation, the school ac- cordingly grew in size as well as stature. Seniors were being accept- ed into the colleges of their choice and, most importantly, finding suc- cess at this level. Thanks to the school's philosophy and program, these students had obtained the needed knowledge and tools to com- pete at the college level. In addition to the regular winter school, Mr. Hatch also operated the Wassookeag Summer School Camp that was housed invarious buildings and cabins on beautiful Lake Was- sookeag, several miles west of Dex- ter. Here the curriculum assumed a different complexiong mornings be- came intensive learning sessions and afternoons were devoted to sports, camping and nature-related activities. Following dinner, the evening hours were spent in prepa- ration for the next day's classes. Summer school enrollment peaked during the 1930's with some seven- ty-five students in attendance. Shortly thereafter the summer camp was sold in order that more attention and time could be devoted to the regular winter school program. One of the famed, palatial estates of Newport, Rhode Island became the new home of the former Wassoo- keag School. At this time tduring the l950'sJ, it was thought that the move from distant Maine to a site more accessible to the major cities of the East would generate an increase in student enrollment. As other estates became available-either by auction 5 X -1 'K S' 'Midi ...M il or through rental arrangements-additional com- mitments were made. The schoo1's name was then changed to the Hatch School. Using tuition monies for real estate rather than for food, fuel oil and faculty salaries, the school be- came seriously overextended and in financial straits. To combat this crisis, parents were called upon for help, and in February of 1958, the Board of Trustees was reorganized. Wag? MTN!! Mr. Hatch retired in 1959 at which time the Board engaged Mr. R. Rob- ert Marr to head the school. He pos- sessed the maturity and experience necessary to make the school prosper. Once again the school moved, this time to Winchendon Massachusetts, where it was housed in the famous Toy Town Tavern. With the move, the school assumed a new name, one to indicate its geographic signifi- cance-The Winchendon School. Prosperity followed and enrollment peaked at 154 students. A vigorous building program added a new dor- mitory, a classroom building, a sci- ence laboratory, a library-classroom complex, several new playing fields and eight new tennis courts. No one could forsee the sudden turn education was about to take. The new era ushered in a period of disen- chantment with tradition and higher education by the nation's youth. Consequently, enrollment at The Winchendon School plummeted. In 1973, Mr. Marr retired.,After several months of searching for a new head- master, the Board was fortunate to engage the services of Mr. Lewis V. Posich who became the head of the school in the fall of 1974. Mr. Posich, the third headmaster, was most ef- fective in turning the school around, operating more in tune with the times, and in meeting youth more on their own terms while maintaining the Winchendon School's fine repu- tation for excellence in education. Mr. Posich passed away in the win- ter of 1982. The Board of Trustees again began a careful search for a new headrnaster. Mr. Keith Otto, who had been with the school for nearly twenty years, assumed the position of Acting Headmaster for a year and a half. In July of 1983 Mr. Stephen V.A. Samborski was appointed as the school's fourth Headmaster. During the last three years, Mr. Sarnborski has undertaken a strong campaign to not only strengthen and maintain the school's basic philosophy, but also to make significant improve- ments to the physical plant. This past summer new tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool and an out- door basketball court were added. The school is currently constructing a new girls' dormitory adjacent to Merrell Hall. Also, plans are being made to revitalize the school's play- ing fields. During this sixty-year span there have been many ups and downs, small crises, and many problems to be solved: however, the school sur- vives and continues to grow in strength. The original concept of a small student-teacher ratio and of- fering help to students who had not developed their potential has never changed. A great need continues to exist for this unique educational ser- vice, and this is our reason for being. .N Syl 9,3391 'Y i 44 4.1.4-0' ..,.,..- Muni 4 ua- J' if 'S 'E' ' V' -tri: +.. Behind the offensive punch of Reggie Tucker, Walton Burgess, Ela- dio Nales and Rick Rohman, and the stinginess of a defense led by Fortun- ato N ales, Tom Coughlin and Mauricio Sulaiman, Winchendon not only made it into post-season play, but they won the A.S.I.S.B.A. Championship, signi- fying the best in New England small school soccer. The season had several highlights, the championship being only one of them. The first highlight stretched the length of the first seven games. Led by returning letter winners, Reggie Tuck- er and Eladio Nales, Winchendon not only defeated but decimated its first seven opponents. While the offense was in high gear, the defensive was also its miserly best. Brilliant goal keeping and fullbacking allowed a mere one goal per game. During this streak, Winchendon played two of its fiercest rivals, Deerfield and Vermont Academy. Both games were decisive victories for a team that would go on to score more goals than any other Win- chendon soccer team ever had. The second highlight was Winchen- don's decisive victory over arch-rival Vermont Academy. This victory, played in some of the rainiest, muddi- est weather all season, showed the combination of sound, in some cases brilliant, individual skills and success- ful team play. In beating Vermont Academy, Winchendon maintained possession of the Marr Cup. The third highlight was a 2-2 tie against powerful Worcester Academy. Only one week earlier, Winchendon had been handed its first loss of the season, a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of the same Worcester team. Playing per- haps the gutsiest game every played by a Winchendon team, the defense played its finest game of the year. The 100 i K.-5.5 K1 j 3,1 ...L . ., K .l -,Swv . K . i .k.g.i,iQ g K .L . Goalie Mauricio Sulaiman made a total of 13 saves, saving three shots that looked like sure goals. Eladio Nales, unassisted, and Walton Burgess, with a beautiful assist from Reggie Tucker, provided the scoring for Winchendon. Finishing the regular season with a record of 11-2-2, Winchendon found itself invited to the A.S.I.S.B.A. Soccer Championships. Having made the tournament, the senior laden team decided that making the tournament was not good enough. Winchendon needed to win the tournament. With the goal set, the team went after it with all the tenacity that got them there.
