O'NElLL Winchendon's own Mr, Chips , Mr. O'NeiIl has made countless selfless con- tributions to the betterment of the school community. For many alumni and current students, past and present par- ents, trustees, and former and current fac- ulty and staff, Mr. O'Neill is our most unforgettable character . For his dedica- tion, his loyalty, and perhaps most impor- tantly, for his love of Winchendon, we dedicate the 1980 Vestigia to Leo R. O'Neill - a man who has given much of what is his so that we may be better people and a better school. AND MR. D. iv , li ' It . EDWARD 1. ofwitovvicz C1924 - 19795 Mr. D contributed much to the life at The Winchendon School. His untimely death was felt by all members past and present of the school community. Dur- ing this career here, he participated in nearly every facet of school life - he certainly played a major role in making Winchendon what it is today. His dedica- tion to and sincere belief in the school and its purposes are honored by all of us who knew him. It is with pleasure and with pride that we dedicate post- humously the 1980 Vestigia to Mr. D. Winchendon's varsity soccer team scrapped its way to a 6-6 record this year, showing an upswing from last year's 'I-'ll-1 record. A late start to the school year showed in the play of the team as it lost its first three games by a total score of 22-1. However, the squad rebounded by winning its next three games, including a thrilling 4-3 victory on Parent's Weekend. The season continued in a topsy-turvy manner, with injuries being a major factor. At several points during the season, the squad had only twelve players available to play a sport that uses li at one time on the field, The season culminated for the squad on an upbeat note with successive victories, 3-0 over the junior - Senior Winchendon team and 3-1 over the faculty. There were several stalwarts on the squad. Goalie Robert Zuckerman played most of the way during the season, as he was the only goalie left after the first 3 V2 weeks, Don Senecal, playing on the forward line, was named Most Valuable Player for the continually inspired play and leadership qualities, Tom Waymark, a freshman, showed potential early in the season. His skills developed steadily, and he finished the season showing great adaptability by playing excellent ball at several positions. leff Follett and Bill Bowen also played major roles for the team. leff centered the fullback line and was the cornerstone of the defense. Bill was a team leader, quiet-spoken but leading by example and always trying to improve both himself and the team, With several underclassmen having played a great deal, the prospects for a strong returning nucleus of players bodes well for next year's team. 97 Varsity Soccer Team Effort and Spirit Spurs Winchendon On . . . , I , 5 .1 ,,5',- -. ., ,.,w7g. , , , r -- .,,- ,-f..:,.-,-,qw 41aa.,,as2ae4Qiw-afav5s3g2-r5Sip6:?.-n,.w,'t' , V, 4 L 4. ,.,,. qwib U , V .ii . . ,V M W ,fr , ,, 4 y , -vw V Us A Q 4 H .,. f on ? . 1 '. We started off the year with only one competitive distance runner, Dave Hewson, and the rest were just people with a keen desire to run. And that is just what we did. Ran over hill, over dell, up and down the golf course, and around town. Each time a little farther and a little faster. Competition-wise, the team did not win any meets, but in their hearts they were winners every time. Every runner on the team improved hisfher time and hisfher self-image as a runner. Some are still running now just for enjoyment, fresh air, and a view of the beautiful land that surround The Winchendon School. The co-captains of the U79 X-C team were Dave Hewson and Lori Vittorino. The seniors on the team were Grissy Bissell, Michelle Wulffaert, lohn H, Adams, Chad Carlont, Carlton, Nancy Ewandhew, Kathy Hanson, Mike Holliman, Dave Martin, jeff Pickering, and Mark Upton. The rest of the team was made up of fine runners such as George Reilly, Dave Surovec, john Fennelly, Chris Lockwood, Tracy Mathieu, Chris Rupp, Rick Sargis, Frank Scully, -Carlos Suarez, Toshi Tanaka, Mike Naughton, Eric Meyers, Larry Mintz, Rob Lemere, Ann Katayama, Manny Colen, Amanda Card, and late comer Kevin McHugh. The cross-country team coaches were Mike Bolduc, Beth Stephenson, and Art Gibney. Even though every runner improved hisfher time, the one runner who improved the most to help the team was Dave Surovec. Carlos Suarez also shortened his running time. One might say that Carlos started with a slow trot and finished with a fast gait. 105 affix Aerobics ., ,. ,Admit A Back Row: john Goodman, Tim Kuist, Mr. Connell, Phil Gaines, Kreg Veber, Edward Gilmore. The main thrust of the program was the building of the cardiovascular system, which deals with improving wind and endurance while lowering the pulse rate. It also included group initiative tasks, and some work at the Keene State Project Adventure course in Keene, New Hampshire. The Project Adventure involved walking on a steel cable suspended thirty feet in the air. ln some cases it was done backward, and in others, blindfolded. A system of relaying was set up so that when someone fell they did not hit the ground, but rather were suspended in the air by a rope known as goldline. They were then gradually lowered by another student controlling the descent. Most improved Participant in the program was Bruce Bender, and the Most Valuable Participant Award was given to Phil Gaines, T07 Women's Sports Back Row: Miss Manning, Lisa Kaiser, Donna Baylis, Miss Keilar. Under the guidance of six coaches, our young ladies enjoyed volleyball, kickball, dance, and horseback riding throughout the fall. Our goals were to encourage both physical fitness and a growing confidence in athletics of all kinds. By the end of the season there was no doubt that we had a fine volleyball team. All of our players showed enormous improvement and many possessed outstanding talent. Among them were: lulie Connell, Mary Lou Fisher, Linda Call, Lisa Kaiser, Debbie Hartstein, Laura McFarlane, Michele Menendez, Monica Mick, Linda Simmons, Stacy Stenholm, Lee Stewart, Polly Traicoff, Cindy Watson, and Lori Wells. In a play-off against Recreational Tennis, our young women made an excellent showing splitting wins against teams twice their size. Our happiest times were the craziest ones. One afternoon we rediscovered volleyball skills by playing while sitting on one another's shoulders, A variation on the theme but fun was had by all, Horseback riding took lulie Connell, Mary Lou Fisher, Linda Call, Sue McGavisk, Monica Mick, Lee Stewart, Polly Traicoff, and Bethany Tullin to Silver Ranch in New Hampshire, We all learned many skills from Alfred Sawyer, the owner of the ranch, and with that background enjoyed trailriding immensely At the Awards banquet we had the pleasure of honoring a young lady whose enthusiasm and talents contributed enormously to the entire program, She was Donna Baylis who was voted this year as Women's Sports most valuable player. 108 1 ffm Ei-, ' .5 if ff- AQ age, v '03 - .fa ,s- 'Q' is f-:'i' -saurhflllmul' wil wh' ,A,.saQ:,,,. 1,96 twfwpfffitxf - x,a'lL Tfi ' ..- A l -.f-. ,?, W3 fx 1 To-'-Ali ' ' ..,, , sa. - -iW4'asQ'.1.a '.-O13-4 -' 1 .I-. With a squad having both quickness and some size, the team worked on producing a fast-break and high motion offense, while accentuating a tough aggressive defense. The team had to overcome several obstacles in its preparations for games during the season. The academic calendar havoc with the the early season practice meant the varsity had to start over in lanuary as if it had never practiced. Adding to the thus shortened preseason was the fact that each basketball team had less than one hour a day on the Clark Court to practice - a real handicap. Nevertheless, the team slowly but surely progressed throughout the season, getting more polished and sophisticated with each game. By the end of the season the team was ready and able to play competitvely against any team on its schedule. lts successes were enhanced and its failures were subordinated by this fact. With many underclassmen on the squad, the prospects were bright for an even better season next year. TIS Varsity Basketball L' Varsity Team Has Promising Future I M ,ff v in ,4 ' - ..f. . 4-w S . Coaches Crosky and O'Brien drilled students in basic takedowns, escapes, reversals, and pinning combinations The season was a success, measured in terms of progress made by individuals. Facing a full schedule of matches against both private and public school teg. Deerfield, Proctor, Tabor, Cushing, KUA, Northfield-Mt. Hermon, Cardnerj Winchendon students had their hand raised in victory at the end of the match. Co-captains Bob Zuckerman and Mike Naughton showed the most progress, surprising opponents with their strength and skill, and registering many individual wins, Particularly impressive was the continual improvement obvious throughout the season. On December 5, Deerfield wrestled a very green, inexperienced team, while by February 23, this same Winchendon team surprised KLJA by its spirit, its aggressiveness, and its ability. From lightweight Scott Hirshberg to heavyweight Vito DeStefano, the entire team pulled together in practice and in official matches, their efforts being rewarded by individual victories and a strong feeling of pride and accomplishment, l24 ,..-5 4-.. :lvl I 1 I CU Q1 PDQ SSC' 59.9 N. ,, rnlwlu UtCUiQf ' , n v iivlg 1' 1 7 il -wqu-f Q' Nfffwi, 2 Standing - Left to Right: Coach Grosky, Steve Fixx, Mike Naughton, Torn Waymark, Sam Tuten, Robert Zuckerman, john W. Winchendon School Playersl present one of its most ambitious' productions to date, Dale VVasserman's One Flew Over The Cuckoofs Nest, adapted from the noyel by Ken Kessey. The two act show, produced and directed by Mr. Bradford Rc Arter and Mr, Mitchell R Crosky skillfully combined humor and pathos creating a finished product which was enthusiastically praised by audiences both nights it was presented After some six weeks of rigorous rehearsal, the cast performed with extraordinary energy and professionalism, eliciting spontaneous outbreaks of applause from the audience. Other aspects of the production - set design and construction, lighting, sound costumes, and properties - were also vital in creating the aura of thoroughly professional theatre. Congratulations go to the entire cast and crew for an excellent and truly memorable production. HZ 9 if! ,mr', blhmnlgnfc . .r 'Y' fi F fj Vg. Activities N... Each dorm sponsored at least two children and accompanied and assisted them during the festivities. The Student Activities Council scheduled cookie decorating and the breaking of a candy-filled pinata as the first events. Our own Santa then visited and distributed gifts which had been purchased by dorm members to the children, Mr. Hansen recited The Grinch Who Stole Christmas to a very quiet audience, followed by dinner with the school community, The day ended with Miss Cariglia's chorus ioyfully singing Christmas carols on the porch of Ford Hall, I-14 Activities Mined seuusgiqj Festivities Include Breaking Candy-Filled Pinata Activities Above: Seminars Offer Something For Everyone. Those who participate actively have the opportunity to gain, master, and share newly-found skills, using various modes of expression in informal and relaxed environments. lust as the school, student population and faculty have grown these past several years, so have Saturday seminars evolved from a small number of highly specialized skills into a wide-variety of hands-on learning experience. An average of twenty different and unique seminars are offered each term, literally providing something for everyone in the school community. To the ever-popular Culinary Arts, Games of Skill, Photography, and Woodworking Seminars have been added Clubs for French and Spanish Language students, Modern Dance, Navigation and Sailing, Forest Management, Wood Carving and Sculpture, Pottery, Handicrafts - Needlework and Sewing, a work program for particular dormitory residents, a wildlife Environmental Studies program, Maple Sugaring, and an opportunity for those preparing the Literary Magainze and Vestigia to plan and work together, to name but a few. Saturday Seminars attest to VVinchendon's philosophy that young people can learn new ideas and skills and have fun doing so. This objective once gained may be the most important lesson all of us can appreciate, both now and in the years to come. il 47 ---1-Il,1 CANDIDS ..-.,n,,-V v . by H1 iw... -...,...., -..... -.....
