M., Rutgers University: B.S., University of Maryland: San Francisco Art Institute: San Francisco State College: University of Michigan The Headmaster TO THE CLASS OF 1979 This is your yearbook. lt is also called an annual. lt is Vestigia 1979. For the moment, the images brought forth by the photographs are clear and sharp. After all, it is this year's book and your memory hardly needs much to jog it. But Vestigia 1979 also is a historical document of a particular year of your lives - a year never to be relived, a year forever past. You will look at it again - in l983, in 20l2, and - yes - even in 2040 when, if you've been lucky and if you and God have been on the same side, you will have attained the same age that Mr. O'Neill has this spring. ve, t 9 2 Q. 5 ' Q ti 4 Q , no S, Q' ,,,n-'SN VIOLETTA M. POSICH Italian, Pianog B.lv1,S., University ol Tricstc tltgilyl And Mrs. Posich And as you look at Vestigia, the memories will come flooding back, not only of a particular lacrosse game, or a special girl or boy, or a memorable teacher, but also ofthe times: the strange hairstyles, the funny-looking cars, the peculiar custom of wearing the tightest or loosest pants CPainter's overalls'?'?'?j available, the inordinate preoccupation with energy - all those things that are a part of your lives today but will appear out of the ordinary tomorrow. Among the most treasured memories of your life will be the vear just past. Vestigia - your own personal historical document - will remind you of that year and of the incontrovertible fact that we'll be here if you need us. F. Beasley, T. Perine, C. Lockwood, J. Pickering, C. Carlton, R. Lemere, Mr. Mackay, and Mr. Peterson. Chagnon And Stewart Earn Playing Honors The 1978 Winchendon School Football squad finished a tough campaign with a 2-5 record. As the team assembled in September for practice, the team had many returning starters in Randy Stewart, J.D. Brayton, John Adams, Jan Shepard, Ned Gadsby, Jeff Israel, and Dave Stevenson. However, throughout the year many of these key players were lost due to injuries. Despite these injuries and some stiff competition, Winchendon had three exciting contests against Darrow, Worcester, and Cushing. The Darrow game was the first of these contests and ended with the Winchendon offense literally inches away from a victory. A last-second run by junior I-Back John Chagnon ended inches short of a touchdown. The final score was 12-8, and fine individual efforts were put forth by defenders John Adams, Ned Gadsby, and Ed Harvey. Chagnon rushed for 102 yards and scored on a 55-yard run. In the Worcester game, Winchendon dominated, 24-0. Again, atstrong defense led by J. D. Brayton, Jan Shepard, and Kurt Macnamara proved too much for the Worcester squad. Chagnon, Randy Stewart, and Hal Schurman all scored touchdowns, and Chagnon racked up a total of 159 yards rushing. Against Cushing Academy, a tough Winchendon squad played hard in the third quarter when Cushing had just scored and seemed to have all the momentum. The final score of 24-14 does not indicate the closeness of the game. Brayton, Shepard, Harvey, Macnamara, and Perine led the defense, which scored a safety on a torceu punt out or tne endzone. Unce again, Lnagnon nad a good day running the ball behind solid blocking, gaining 219 yards, as he, Stewart, and Chris O'Hara all tallied. Messrs. Mackay, Peterson, Foster, and Martin coached the team led by captains Stewart, Chagnon, Brayton, and Shepard. The defense consisted of Brayton, Shepard, Chagnon, Harvey, Adams, Gadsby, Macnamara, Perine, DeStefano, Kuist, Beasley, O'Brien, Cole, and Grundvig. The offensive squad included Stewart, Chagnon, O'Hara, Schurman, Brayton, Shepard, Harvey, Kuist, Adams, Gadsby, Stevenson, Israel, Carlton, Lockwood, and Naughton. Quarterback Randy Stewart earned the honor of being named the 1978 Most Valuable Player, and John Chagnon was chosen the team's Most Improved Player, as he led the team in rushing 1600 yardsj and scoring C36 pointsj. Both these players, along with the other seniors displayed leadership throughout the season. V? IL... .Sh , ,.,, 'DHL 2 ff. 13- WR Q 1 .f '-3? Y- ,Jw- Q 1 .4- -A.i avlbvf' Ulf! 71. 'K ' . -J. There was individual achievement, however. David Hewson's ten-mile-a-day workout put him at the front of the Winchendon runners in meet after meet. And there were more than twenty students who, though they never competed officially in a race, found they were able to run farther and faster by the end of the season than they had supposed possible during the first practices in September. , - J f 4 on - '- .-A 0- 4' ' ' 21, ' f- .0 ,Q ef. + A' M if -.--- ,ft fn . - . 41:31 Q ' . . 3 ' 'If X 5-. Players Develop And Gain Advanced Soccer Skills The 1978 Varsity Soccer season was a difficult one for many, but hopefully a learning experience for all. The team, with a final record of l-ll-1, was comprised of many players lacking competitive soccer experience. The team always faced teams with more experience in interscholastic competition. In spite of the team's record, many of Winchendon's soccer players this season gained practical usage of the skills they developed. At the top of the list was team captain and 1978 Most Valuable Player, Kazu Yamada, and the Most Improved Player, Todd Metzger. The Varsity team had a number of underclassmen with good skills and great potential. With a little help from the J.V. Soccer program and any new students who might be skilled at this game, next year could be a successful year for Winchendon School Soccer. Wx Qs. 1'-H-wav '. . ff ,if - .R , wwqhf ,., ,- 715 fb V. Jr. Sr. Squad Hand Defeats To Varsity And Faculty In School Tournaments The most impressive performance by the Junior Senior squad came in the waning moments of an often frustrating season. Losing in overtime to both the Cambridge Schoolf3-23 and K.U.A. C4-35 was typical of the team's exceptional effort. An effort often inappropriately reflected in lopsided win-loss columns. Spurred by Ricky Taylor's hustle, the Junior Senior team rode to victory against such powerhouses as the Varsityf2-ll and Facultyf5-4 in overtimej in the annual school tournaments. These victories were found to be a rewarding finale to a hard fought fall. Taylor's sustained effort and encouraging play won him the admiration of his teamates and the honor of the Most Valuable Player award for the 1978 season. Writ E if L Xyl! ,Q f - v we EK , lr in XX . J.V.ers Display utstanding Sportsmanship And Team Spirit In early September, there was the usual influx of athletes for the first soccer tryout. Each coach observed some seventy five athletes in attempt to find a promising group of players for his squad. The Junior Varsity coaches, Dudley Cotton and Jeff Willbanks, were given a squad of twenty four players of varying talents. With a difficult schedule in front of them, the Junior Varsity team worked hard towards a successful season. Although the team had an unimpressive season of l-13-l, it showed no indication of the team's real success. The team's MVP's Jim Listenik, Josh Ruple, and co-captain Joe DiMattia worked extremely hard to keep the team in the games. Players Jim McLaughlin, Abbot Low, Chuck Arruda, J.J. Beltran, Bobby Farhardi, Larry Connelly, Phillipe Peralto, Mike Stahl, and Steve Goldstein made significant contributions. Stalwarts, Sander Craig, Chris Carlson, Courtney Hamilton, Eric Kirchoff, Alex Stevens and Ricardo Otaola formed the overworked defenders squad. Cements Positive Attitude Practice opened as usual following Thanksgiving vacation and as coaches Vaine, Foster, and Cotton surveyed the candidates they appeared to forsee a season of unusual depth for Winchendon Hockey. An early season scrimage victory over K.U.A. seemed to cement this positive attitude. However, with the start of our second season in middle January the depth was gone. Enter the iron squad at eleven, not even two full teams, and only one goaltender. It was an experienced, small squad which faced that ten game schedule. Led by veteran defenseman Dan Bickford twho would later see action at virtually every positionj that under manned, overworked team faced grueling practice sessions and the much needed condi- tioning to make them competitive. A positive attitude prevailed and the last half of the season, this team played some of the best hockey seen at this school for a long time. The offense was fortunate to find a spark plug in the form of center Donald Ruschioni. Ruschioni, Bickford, and the hardworking goal tender Kazu Ya- mada led the team which would find itself competing against teams twice their size. Hal Schurman and Craig Tannock complemented Ruschioni's free wheeling style as his wings comprised the team's first line, one that could compete with every top unit they skated against. A hardworking senior trio formed the second waveg Roger Ludwig, Stephen Smith, and Jeff Cannon. Bickford teamed with the two converted for- wards, underclassmen Nick O'Brien and Chris O'Hara, whose improvement changed the season by giving much needed support to tender Yamada, who Y . . Led by veterans Campbell Clarke. Perry Zim- merman, and rookie Chris Boos, the cross country team earned one victory and one tie against three losses, The competitive year began at ls.U.A. w here a seasoned group of nordic skiers easily handled the eager Winchendon squad. Many of the team were not able to give their best effort as the wax was missed by the coach. Perry Zimmerman was the top finisher in the meet placing ninth to lead the Winchendon team. The winter tour then moved back to Winchendon as the XC team prepared to meet the Dublin School. History was made that day as the Winchendon School experienced its first win ever in XC coinpe- tition, David Meehan pulled the upset ofthe year as he nosed out Dublin's ace Steele by I0 seconds setting a Winchendon course record at the time. Perry Zimmerman t3rdl. Campbell Clarketithl. Chris Boostothj, Harry Morset7thl. and lloward Butterworthttithl followed Meehan to give the Winchendon Squad a Zl to I5 victory, The Alpine Team then met a strong Cushing team for its first meet in recent history. Due tothe lack of training. the Winchendon Squad was overpowered and never had a chance to get into the high scoring placements after a slow first run on the 2700 foot Ciiant Slalom course set at Mount Watatie. Chris Boos led the team with an eighth place finish. With one day's rest, the XC team met a strong law renee Acade- my team on the home course, A year earlier, I A. completely dominated the competition by capturing the first six places. This year was to be different. Paced by P. Yimmermantlrdl, C. Boostslthl, H. Morset5thl, and C. This time however, Alpine joined XC as an additional event. Plagued by falls in thc first run, the best the squad could muster was a 3rd by Clarke and a 7th by .I.D. Brayton ina Dublin dominated Giant Slalom Due to poor waxing the XC Team could not repeat its earlier performance as Steele led Dublin palsl the Winchendon Squad. C larke had his best race of the year finishing .lrd followed by lloward Butterworth's very respectable -ith place showing. Morse and Zimmerman rounded out the scoring for Winchendon. The Team this year consisted of the above mentioned athletes as well as seniors Larry Carus, .lavier Carus, Ken Briggs, junior Norm Walton, sophmores John llastings, .leff Pickering. and Wayne .Iohnson. The ski room and the waxing facility was handled by managers Jim Beese and .lohn Adams. The operation of a ski meet is often difficult and cannot run smoothly without helpful volunteers. To cure that chronic ill some new activities were scheduled. Starting the year off was the always popu- lar Game Show Night with Let's Make a Deal, Name That Tune, The Dating Game and the surprise of the evening This is Your Life. The annual UNICEF Carnival involved a great deal of planning, but netted a generous 5335.00 dona- tion to that charity. Before Thanksgiving the Student Council spon- sored a Battle of the Dorm. A varitable decathalon of off the walls events took place between the rival dorms vying for the ultimate pig-out on free pizza and coke which went to the winner. Concluding the fall activity schedule was the Christmas Party for needy Winchendon children, hosted financially by contributing dorms. The party was spotlighted by dinner and a jovial Vito DeStefano's appearance as a gift giving St. Ni- cholas. After the Christmas Party the school treated the students to an enjoyable Christmas disco-dance. The Winter Term brought with it some new ideas. Bob Fellows, a talented magician, amazed his audi- ence with slight of hand, mind reading and as a finale a stunning levitation act. Next on the agenda was the ever popular Gong Show. The combination of some very zany as well as some very talented performances kept the interest high and the much feared GONG silent. Providing a musical alternative was the Nothen Doen Combo from Fort Devens with their progressive rock - jazz style. The experienced student musicians appreciated and thoroughly enjoyed the more modern musical sound. Closing out the Winter Term a dance featuring the pop rock tunes of Middle ofthe Road kept the crowd hoppin with their long musical sets. The Social Committee, guided by the faithful advis- ing of Debbie Posich, Kim Posich, Mr. Morse and Mrs. Gibbons was always receptive to new ideas and somehow indirectly responsible for making the Win- chendon social life a healthier, happier experience. Parental Involvement Motrvatlng The '78-'79 edition of PARENTS WEEKEND be- gan with dismal weather in the form typical of a New England torrent. Although high water and soggy feet was the order of the day it did not dampen the rewards of parent-teacher exchanges regarding our school ex- periences. For some students it was the moment of truth, but for many others the total benefit of parental involvement in the learning process would be untold as a motivational element. While the foul weather on the athletic fields was making the football and soccer events difficult to enjoy for some other stout hearts donned umbrellas as others sought the shelter of their cars in an effort to watch their sons and daughters in Winchendon sports spectaculars. All in all the weekend was a success as we enjoyed seeing new as well as old faces in a different setting and welcomed a change of pace as an appreciated break in routine. .gag c3,fc7,f .
