It started with the first day. x RPN in l ' 1, x 'X Q i' I f I ' 5-...csc in K' Aware of their increased responsibilities and of their influence on the underclass- men, the seniors assumed their new roles of leadership with maturity and dignity. In the dormitories, in the study hall and in the dining hall, the seniors had been placed in important positions - positions formerly occupied by members of the faculty. ,: .. VESTI GIA, the drama and camera clubs, and PROGRESS were but a few of the activities which bound together the common interests of those who believed in and were anxious to promote the school's ideals. Under the leadership of competent seniors, the students were able to exercise their imagination, exhibit their creative talents and assume the role of makers and doers. Headmaster's Message What lies ahead for our young people, nobody knows, not even they. As vociferous as some of them have been to institute change and to make every in- stitution Cmoral, social, academic, economic, etc.j better they, in reality, are more confused about their issues than any past generation. Yet, from all the furor and confusion, I am sure that a solution will be worked out, probably so simple that they will wonder why they had not thought of it sooner - how dumb can we be? lf our boys get nothing else out of this school ex- perience, however long they have been here, may they always remember that there is absolutely noth- ing corny, nothing unnatural, no stigma to being a good person - a genuine human being. So many times and in different ways they have been reminded that: honesty in their associations, cour- tesy Cgood mannersj to all with whom they are deal- ing, thoughtfulness in their consideration of oth- ers, understanding of the other fellow's position, to- lerance of the shortcomings of others, honorable in their transactions, whatever they may be, are only some of the values which, in their simplicity, have withstood the imposition of time. When all peoples, through the influence of young men as I believe ours to be, begin to remember and to practice what these are all about, then all things will fall into place, making them wonder Cand per- haps chagrinedj that they had not thought of it sooner. LYTTON STRACHEY French, Spanish and Latin are taught to introduce a different culture to the student, all of which have contributed to our total Western heritage. A second language cannot be learned as a variation of one's native tongue. Time is spent to develop clear pronunciation and oral comprehension. This groundwork permits an easier transition to the reading of other literatures. The final step of this sequence is the basic training necessary to the development of the ability to write in another language. iw' John 0. Matthews - Lating A.B. Uuftsyp M.Ed. fHarvardD. Jack W. SEC- Entertaining And Educational During the academic year, the Winchendon School Drama Club presented three totally different plays. The combined efforts of actors, stagehands and makeup artists produced plays ighich were enjoyed by the rest of the student ody. During the fall term, Eugene lonesco's The Bald Soprano was presented. The play, a classic of the absurd theatre, showed modern man with all of his foibles clearly on the table. The lack of communication witnessed in the characters was laughed at, but one was also forced to leave at the end with a sense of the tragic imbedded in the mind. The second play presented was written by the master of French comedy, Moliere. ln The Forced Marriage , the author of Tartuffe and The Bourgeois Gentlemen , pokes fun at philosophers as well as lovers and proves that at times it is bet- ter for a person to simply stay at home. Sqana- relle, the aged main character, belatedly decides to take a wife but because a friend laughs at him for pretending to be young, he has second thoughts about the venture. But even though he attempts to escape his predicament, he is eventually forced into the marriage by the strong will of the family of the girl. ln the process, every convention is laughed at, and every cherished belief is disman- tled. The final play of the year was Samuel Beckett's Act Without Words II. Beckett, who writes in French but is a British citizen, is a leading propo- nent of the absurd theatre as was shown by his classic play, Waiting for Godot. ln Act Without Words II two players go through the motions of being alive, but both end their dreary lives from whence they came - two trash cans. Even though they attempt to outdo one another, at the end both come to rest in their trash cans. Throughout the year simple sets were used and the makeup was kept at a minimum. Nevertheless, a competent, though smaller than usual, stage crew worked many hours to present a total effect which would be pleasing to the audience. Through the combined efforts of stage crews and actors the productions were a success. Soccer team began its season rather slowly, with losses in a scrimmage to Kimball Union, and in regular season games to Quabbin Regional and St. Pauls. Then the team began to work as a cohesive unit and earned victories over Thomas More, Mt. Hermon, Vermont Academy and Deerfield teams, finishing with an overall record of four victories and three defeats. The nucleus of potential varsity members was seen in the steady improvement shown by underclassmen throughout the season. BACK: D. Rindge, Mr. Cole, M. Hubbell, P. Neilson, J. Warren, K. O'Bryon, D. Younger Teams Profit From Experience And Competition As the season progressed, the third soccer team steadily improved and became more cohesive. The team ended the season with tour wins and two losses. Each member saw the positive results of his effort both in practice and in game conditions. Qualities such as spirit, aggressiveness, interdependency and character became most noticable and therefore, helped in teaching many of the younger boys, who made up a good part of the team, the importance of team unity and solidity. Hampered by inexperience and the loss of early-season standouts, the Fourth Soccer team exhibited courage, determinism and a competitive spirit that should pay off for them in future athletic seasons. Basketball Display Competitive Spirit lnexperience took its toll early in the season but hustle and determination spelled what must be called a successful season for the J.V. basket- ball team. Enthusiasm and hard work turned twelve individuals into a coordinated team and brought about a victory over the K.U.A.-J.V. team late in the season. The progress made by each boy should provide future J.V. and varsity teams with both strength and depth. Captain Art Buckley drives for two. J.V. Basketball BACK: Mr. Gellein, P. Kerrigan, D. It was a season of development with steady improvement shown in all phases of the game. However, the lack of a scoring punch and a consistently low shooting average was the rule in most games. Although outscored for the most part, the thirds were seldom outplayed. Litchfield goes for the layup. Third Basketball BACK: P. Dye, P. Sargeant, R. Monahan, L. Stentzel, T. The varsity wrestling team showed enthusiasm and continued to improve throughout the winter term. The season's dual meet record of three wins and four defeats is slightly misleading. The meets at Exeter and at Leominster were both decided in the closing moments. The team's most satisfying win was a come-from-behind victory over a strong Mount Hermon squad. The Class C. Wrestling Tournament was held at Rivers Country Day School this year. Hans Anger- mueller Cunlimitedb and Rob Wood C1215 placed first in their respective classes, while Bill Greaves placed second in the 167 pound division. Ralph Burdick, with a third place at 103 pounds, and Bob Nlerriman, with a fourth place finish at 138 pounds, helped to lead the Winchendon team to a fifth place finish in team standings. ku V, - --M W ,Aj WM YNWWW, , ,L ....,,.......---w W' H ' Ralph squeeks by. Pushing one's self up and down the pool, lap after lap and day after day in practice, is hard and tedious work. A swimmer will often ask himself if it is really worth it. This year's varsity made the tough prac- tices pay off with Winchendon's best won-lost record ever. Eleven different swimmers bettered school rec- ords which stood at the start of the season, as new standards were established in every event. The class of 1970 leaves a mark of excellence which future classes and teams will be hard-pressed to equal. A new team appeared on the Winchendon athletic scene during the winter of 1970. What had been known as the hack squad in past years practiced hard and won two out of three scheduled meets. Both wins were the result of victories in the final re- lay. The triumph at Mount Hermon was especially satisfying because it dramatically demonstrated the progress of Winchendon's swimming program. In 1970 the J.V.'s beat a team which had been on the varsity schedule in previous years. The varsity and J.V. lacrosse teams fielded two of the strongest teams in the history of the school. Speed and hard checking dominated the play, providing the fans with a very exciting brand of lacrosse. For the first time, a third la- crosse team was fielded. Although lacking experi- ence, the third team improved rapidly as the sea- son progressed, far surpassing the coaches' ex- pectations. .T 1 f ff.
