From a total student body of 116 in 1965 to 160 in 1969, from a completely wooden building complex to the present new stonehenge structures, from wooded areas to open playing fields and asphalt tennis courts, from a faculty of 24 to the present day 34, the Class of 1969 was in the midst of the growing years and matured along with what they will call tomorrow the old alma mater. I can go on and on and list the many fine attributes of not only you, the seniors, but of all the boys in the school. Serves at noon meal. .f One of the leaders in the class asked early for privileges that would set the senior class apart from the underclassmen. The privileges he noted were in the form of responsibilities to be shared by all seniors in the dormitories, dining hall, kitchen, library, study hall, movies, dances and other areas where faculty supervision is the usual practice. Too easily and too quickly, we forget that, despite the increased academic demands made and pressures exerted on our young people and their assumed ability to handle them, they are boys and girls who should enjoy that status as long as they are growing up in boy and girl circumstances. The transition from secondary school to college, gapped by a three-month Cor lessl interval of a vaca- tion period, does not automatically induce a chemical, physiological, spiritual or mental change that trans- fers a boy into a man, able to handle the assignments that are a man's. l believe that the students, in the process of grow- ing up, becoming more mature, should be charged with as much responsibility as they can handle well. Finally, in the entire process of new experiences and new adjustments, be ever-mindful that there are natural and beautiful things all about you that, much too often, go unnoticed, are taken for granted, are ignored. God is not asleep nor withdrawn nor uncon- cerned. He gave, gives, and will give us a great deal. Take the time from your various tasks, look around you and take the time to say, thank you. At the Winchendon School he was proven right by numerous students who through their poetry attempted to change and improve their vast au- dience. If the 1969 Drama Club has had a motto, that's it. A spoof on the typical Western , a five minute series of non-sequiturs, and a play which pre- sented history as it wasn't, all provided the accomplishment of this goal. The creation of a genuinely theatrical atmosphere was heightened not only by the fine acting, but also through the stage crew's transformation of cardboard and tin cans into practically professional lighting and scenery. Praise is due to all members of the Club who assisted in producing entertainment which was truly by, as well as for, the student body. The Junior Varsity Hockey Team, despite a losing record, de- veloped well as a team throughout the season by continuously playing hard and aggressively against formidable opposition. The desire and determination of the entire group were most notice- able not only in the games but in the daily practice sessions. Be- cause of the teams enthusiasm and concern, spirit and morale never faltered. Since all who participated manifested a sense of appreciation fonthe sport of hockey along with a noted realiza- tion of what fun such a sport can be, the season therefore, be- came successful and rewarding. Early in February, the Third Hockey Team was formed from the third and fourth lines of the J.V. Squad. The team's record of 0-2 indicates only its lack of experience, not its improvement or spirit. The increased practice time gave the boys a chance to im- prove their individual skills and to mold them into coordinated team effort. Playmaker Chick Forker sparks the offense. With a record of eight wins and five losses, the J.V. Basketball team set a school record for wins in one season. The success of the season was largely a result of two factorsg team spirit, and the strong leadership of the co-captains Bo Elder and David Knowlton. The Third Basketball Team had a successful season despite its 2-7 record. Success did not come with winning games, but with constant improvement and a fine team spirit. Fundamentals and teamwork were stressed throughout the entire season. The team played its best when using these basic skills, but was at times frustrated because of the very tough competition.
