Cl.ASS oli 1958 The year one thousand nine hundred and fifty-five marked the beginning of the class of l958 although it was actually its second year of high school. This year began with the election of class officers and student council representatives. Those elected for the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer were John Cranford, Albert Williams, Nancy Spires and Natalie Struble respectively. The student council representatives were Vivian Jefferson, Wayne Newman, Harriet Johnsen and Barbara Woods. After the elections came the formulation of the class constitution which is still in effect. It was this year when the ideal of a candy sale was intro- duced by the senior class of '58'. lt is now a school tradition. Other activities of this year included such things as sensational skating parties, smashing dime dances, and a carnival and maga- zine drive. This year would not be complete without our men- tioning of the Halloween Dance held at the Teen Canteen, the Potluck Dinner and meeting to discuss senior trip clubs, and, of course, the Christmas Dance with none other than Tom Ramsey as "Sophomore King". This was only the beginning of the senior class of '58'. 5 Mrs. Funk, superviserp Marcella Klmlln Secretary, Delbert Brown, President, Ron nie Stratton, Vice President, Sonia Law W The iunior year began with the usual election of class officers and student council representatives. The only changes in class offices were Wayne Newman as President, and John Coburn as Vice President. Coburn replaced Newman after the First semes- ter and Sharon Redding replaced Coburn. Student council posi- tions were filled by Beverly lsrael, Bonnie Stinedurf, James Cole, Helen Hutchinson and Delbert Brown. Harriet Johnsen and Ronnie Egnor replaced Jim Cole and Helen Hutchinson at the end of the first semester. I :,,.'.'.n ..-wg, Ji--'H' Ji-- ,,...- ,,. ...rv . - .:. ...",v,. .. Ronnie Egnor, Jim Risner, and Sandra McDermott demonstrated their acting ability in the "Curious Savage". Over eighty per cent of the cast of "The Night of January l6th" were seniors. Delbert Brown was the winner of the grand prize at the Halloween Party. He came dressed as a member of the opposite sex and before the night was over, he received more dating offers than any girl present. The seniors also had control of the concessions at the basketball games. 'It is now I958, the "ultimatum" for the departure of the class of l958. This year as the others began with the filling of class offices and student council positions. Delbert Brown, Ronnie Stratton, Marcella Kimlin and Sonia Lawson filled the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Betty Dubois, Joanne Dooley, Tom Maynard, Larry Barker, Bev- erly Israel filled the student council positions. The activities of the senior year began with the annual Halloween Party where Janie Fraser and Larry Kozee walked away with the costume prize. After that came the play, "The Perfect Idiot". Among the seniors who were excellent for their portrayals were Charles McCoy, Tom Maynard, Harriet Johnsen, Beverly Israel, Sharon Redding, Vivian Jefferson, Jim Risner and Eugene Jones, the Perfect idiot. The senior class also had charge of football concessions, the usual candy sales and dime dances were also part of the activi- ties of this year. The senior class of l958 ended their three years with the senior trip, which was a 5-day trip to Washington, D.C. There are many things which will be forgotten, but I doubt very seriously if there is anyone who will forget the fun he or she had as being a part of the class of l958. 1 , x 'I gf' 'I I Ol! The Queen and her Court presided over the evening. Bonnie Steindurf was chosen Queen by the entire student body with her court as follows: Seniors-Lottie Patton and Florence Shepherd, Juniors-Gwen Murphy and Alice Arika. They each were presented a large bouquet of roses. Another important event given by the Juniors was the Junior- Senior Picnic, which was a combination of swimming and picnick- ing. This occasion was attended by many Juniors and Seniors, who found it most relaxing and refreshing. Many of the Juniors represented the school in the numerous school activities. The Echo staff, the Yearbook staff and members of the Photography Club represented the school in Ann Arbor at the International Inter-scolastic Press Association. Willow Run High School was also represented by Willie Ash- ford in the Regional Oration contest in which he won first prize. June Johnson and Joyce Bryant, displayed their artistic talents on a bulletin board prepared in connection with the Michigan Week. While listening to the Harmonettes, we noticed that three of them are from the great class of l959. We now bid our farewell to the Seniors of l958. Our hope and desire is that our senior year will be as delightful and prosperous as theirs. The Sophomores excelled in sports during l958. When the Fall brought in the football season, Sophomore James Gray, Jerry Hayes, Charles Johnson, and Roger Henderson proved their athletic skills as prospective stars. Other boys on the football team were Jesse Anthony, Lacey Bowman, and Toby Scott. ln the Homecoming game, honoring the alumni Judy Mc Kim was our re- presentative on the homecoming court. "Sports-wise" the class of "60" reached its height on the basketball court. At one time, four of the five varsity players con- sisted of Sophomores. They were: Clifford Bellers, Sammy McCoy, Toby "Jug" Scott, and Roger Henderson. Also singled out for recognition in basketball were Jerry Penley and Jerry Hayes. Jesse Anthony, Eddie Hugan, and Charles Jackson on the junior varsity. Later, Eddie Hugan, Charles Jackson, Jerry Hayes, and Jerry Penley were promoted to the Varsitysquad. Simultaneously with basketball went wrestling. Those sophomore wrestlers were: ront Row: Joseph Hayes, President, udy Ritchie, Vice President, Rosalene lllis, Secretary, Betty Short, Treasurer. .E ack Row: Mrs. Goodsman. My Lacey Bowman, James Gray, Willie Powell, and J. C. Pye. James Gray brought home a special wrestling award from the Amatur Athletic Union KA. A. U.l tournament held in Ypsilanti. With the coming of spring numerous Sophomores faces were seen on the basieball field. Track victories were won through the help of Wilburn Baldwin, James Gray, Charles Johnson, and Charles Jackson. Jesse Anthony and Jerry Penley alternated on the pitching mound for the junior varsity baseball team. Clifford Bellers, Jerry Hayes, Eddie Hugan, and Toby Scott were active in SOPHOMORE OFFICERS - baseball. Other soph 's that helped to make the record were: Skippy Scott, Floyd Sumner, Ted Mangard, and Bill Shepard. Varsity cheerleading appealed to Miriam Lundy and Judy Dupuis while Rosalene Willis, Betty Short, Ann Cofield, and Susie Bergman served on the iunior varsity squad. Money-making projects such as: candy sales, dime dances and consessions held at school after athletic events, were well carried out. However, plays constituted the highlight of sophomore participation. Sophomores having parts in the first play, "The Perfect Idiot" were: Marianne Greer as "Carla", Donna Rideout as "Rhodora", the maid, and Eleanor,Porter as "Linda". The "Arsenic and Old Lace" cast consisted of McCoy as "Doctor Einstien", Judy Ritchie as "Elaine", Cooper Mike as "Mr. Witherspoonup Bill Risner as "Mr. Brophy"5 and Joe Giardino as "Mr. Klein"p with the corner cop Larry Fleming and Skippy Scott serving important roles as corpses. One half of the active four debaters in the Debate Club were Sophomores, Betty Short and Don Chappell. E V g V .. - A., Y ,, , The Marching Band under the direction of Mr. Paul Richmond studies such things as the fundamentals of marching, field formations, street marching and the art of playing the instrument on the march. The better players and marchers are chosen and then these marching band members prepare for the annual State Fair Parade held in Detroit on the 30th of August. The Band re- ceived a trophy for the efforts that they'd put forth last year. Football shows, parades, dedications and band day keep this organ ization busy until the annual Christmas parade held on December 4th in Ypsilanti, Michigan. -- 7 7 ir'4il 11 192 X N WZ 55 ' jf!
