Q if ' 1 Old Desk Used By Samuel W1111ston Prctured above 15 the old desk whrch Samuel W1ll1StOH once used 1n h1s factory here ID Easthampton probably soon after the fOL1I'ld111g of Wrlllston Semlnary A heavy set affalr w1th many small drawers and cubby holes It serves as 1 helpful h1nt as to what type of man the founder was Although the desk may now look as though lt had een better days as If probably has 1t IS stlll rn excellent cond1t1on and w1ll probably be IH use for many years to come When the desk was first located th1s year there llngered some doubt 1n our m1nds as to ICS authent1c1ty IH regard to Mr W1ll1StOH These doubts have now been entlrely dlspelled through the flndmg of 1 passage ID the d1ary of Granvllle A Matthews whose descendants are now 1n possesslon of the desk from wh1ch 1S quoted Entry for Monday May 21 1877 Bought the desk wh1ch Mr W1ll1StOH used at the ofhce w1th furmture mcludmg cha1r of Mrs W for S5 O0 Also found has been a recerpt dated May 23rd whlch says Recelved of G A Matthews fxve dollars S5 OOD loaned h1m the Zlst mst to pay Mrs W1ll1SfOH for desk From all th1s then we gather that Mr Matthews des1red to buy the desk from Mrs W1ll1StOD but found hlmself financ1ally unable to do so For th1s reason therefore he borrovs ed the money and purchased the desk Thanks to h1m we are able to have th1s desk w1th1n reach WILLISTON ACADEMY f 161 a 4 A 3 1 p r . :L 3 . 3 . . . , . . Mr. Williston aided both Amherst and Mt. Holyoke Colleges, but he wanted to found a secondary school He therefore consulted with William S Tyler, a teacher at Amherst, and decided to form an English College Because his Hnances were not too good, he could only spare thirty thousand dollars at the start but this was increased before the end of the second year He continually gave money to the school from time to time after this Because he was a very religious man he did not believe that anyone should do work on Sunday On one of Mr and Mrs Wlllistons trlps to Europe a strange incident occurred On the day that the boat was to sail there was a violent storm The vessel did not sail as scheduled but on the Sunday it cleared up The captain and the crew were anxious to set sail but Mr Williston would not go because it was Sunday Finally the captain agreed to wait until Monday The boat reached London a day before all the others which had sailed on Sunday This llttle story clearly shows what a man of convic tion Mr Williston was Being an extremely charitable man Mr Williston gave over a m1ll1on dollars to many different organlzations Cver half of th1s amount was given to Williston Academy and Amherst College He gave both to Protestants and Catholics alike For many many years he was a trustee of Amherst and Mt Holyoke Colleges Emxly Graves Williston f1797 1885j Williston Academy had another founder and her name was Emily Graves Williston She was the child of a farmer of the town of Williamsburg Because there were no higher schools for young ladies at that time her schooling was l1m1ted to the public schools of the town Studying after she was married however made her a very cultured woman One day Rev Payson Williston exchanged a service with the pastor of the Williams burg church It was at this time that he met Emily Graves and became interested ln her for his son Samuel Mr W1ll1StOU became acquainted with her and this friendship rrpened into love After three years of engagement they were married she at the age of twenty five and he at the age of twenty seven Mr Williston owed the beginning of his fortune to her wisdom and skill to her lngenuity to her industry and to her charity She vsas his wise adviser and silent but not inactive partner in all his enterprises that were successful Mrs Williston was extremely active throughout her l1fe with the duties of a good Christian woman At the time of her death a Springfield paper printed the notice with the heading What one woman can d Professor William Tyler of Amherst said at the time of her death Mrs Williston was a rare example of inflexible Hrmness united with singular gentleness and grace a firmness based on moral and Christlan principle which nothing could turn aside from what she deemed the path of duty united with a gentleness born of Christian love which IS long suffering and kind which thmketh no evil and s eketh 1 ot her own which beareth believeth hopeth endureth all things CENTENNIAL fl I , t c c , ' . . , . . .
