K I V- A 53 ' 3 S Administration Individual preparation for effective service to our country has been the main consideration in the adaptation of our program this year. The global war has stepped-up and given an urgency to such preparation as never before. The high schools of our nation are dedicated to such ser- vice and to that end the mobilization and active conservation of our resources will continue until victory is won. Our school is one of that com- pally. 1 Boys and girls everywhere in our nation are making effective contributions through organ- ized and continuing salvage and war bond cam- paigns, realizing that such eiiort is a patriotic privilege. Already graduates of last year are participating in the larger eiiort of active service on land. sea and in the air. Within a short time L. F. DERR Principal A. M. XVEAVER Superintendent of Schools the members of the Class of 1944 will be actively engaged in the iight for justice, freedom and the preservation of our democratic institutions. All of us, wherever or however we may be called upon to serve, must dedicate ourselves to our responsibilities as good Americans. This dedication as good citizens should not be ter- minated with the war but must be enduring if we are to organize and maintain a better world. As you go forth to these greater responsi- bilities, our best wishes and our continued in- terest go with you. Good luck, Class of 1944! . 5? 12 The School Board Speaks The Board of School Directors of the School District of the City of NVilliamsport extends its sincere congratulations and best wishes to the class of l9Ll4l upon the satis- factory completion of the courses prescribed for graduation from the lvilliamsport Senior High School. Many and difhcult problems lie ahead to the solution of which you will be asked to make your contribution. First and foremost, there is a war to he won. To the winning of the war, whether you serve on land, sea. in the air. or on the home front, we are confident that you will give loyal and devoted service to your country. The war and planning for the peace have thrust upon you such problems as these: What kind of political order do we want? How can we prevent a recurrence of war? How can controls for maladjustments in the world's social and economic life be established? Your training ill the processes of thinking, your knowledge of American history and government, your participation in the democratic way of life in a school demo- cratically conducted, will help you to find a right solution for these problems and aid you in making the transition back to peace. Finally, we would recall for your inspiration and guidance these words of Holy Writ: HSeest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kingsg he shall not stand before mean menfi THE hVIl.LlAlNlSP0ltT Scnool. And I wasn'tl Iad seen too many harassed class teachers dashing about through the halls on a myriad of errands that had to be fitted into a schedule already full. What I could not foresee then is that being a class adviser has a wealth of compensations. I have come to know many of you as friends in a way that is seldom possible in a classroom relationship. It has been fun to work with you-to make our Junior Benefit a success, to plan our parties, to watch the Senior Play develop, to choose our operetta for your Class Day, and to decide on which com- mencement announcement was the best looking. In every one of the countless details that were involved in your class activities, I have 20 C A ROSE L. Some of you have given many long hours of serviee in work that was often tiresome, but there was never any complaint- not even when your treasurer had to chem-k his hooks for days to find a lost fifty cents! I shall he sorry, indeed, to know that as you file out after com- mencement, our Close fellowship will he at an end. You have been a truly fine class, developing from immature sophomores to capable young men and women, who will, I hope, carry with you the same spirit and enthusiasm that you have shown in the last three busy years. It is like the old Chinese plays in its appeal to the imagination of the audience which is stimulated by the absence of scenery and the subtle use of lights and sounds. Throughout the play the quiet, easy going stage manager relates the happenings of the town in his typical New England matter-of-fact tone. The play deals mainly with the Gibbs and Webb families, their neighbors and friends. The love affair of Emily and George, the wedding scene and the funeral bear all of those elements of abundant joy and sorrow that are life. If there is any moral to the play, it is that no living person can realize how wonderful life is-in spite of its sorrows. 58 Senior Class Play 4'Ol'R TOWN Stage Nlanager --- Dr. Gibbs ---- Joe Crowell --- Si Crowell ,v,. When we entered school this September, we were greeted with a new principal, Mr. L. F. Derr. who replaced Dr. J. E. Nanearrow, now principal of the Upper Darby High School. Early this fall, we, the class of 194-5, became officially organized for the first time by electing Gene Wilson, presidentg Mary Ellen Croover, vice president, Sally Lamade. secretary, and Charles Towar, treasurer. These officers met with Mr. Ray C. Singley, our class teacher. to appoint the various class committees. ln October for our annual Junior Benefit. we sold tickets to the Rialto theater under the guidance of Glenn Williamson, Ardath Houser, and Donald Armsby. ln athletics Bob Vandergrift, Bill Stebbins, Dick Brubaker, Harry Notor. and Scott Wilhelm became our gridiron heroes, and Bill Wertz, Dick Brubaker, and Bill Stebbins really shone in basketball. Mary Ellen Groover. Ann Trayer, Joanne Bodle, Dorothy Boyd, and Betty Lou Peterman help to cheerlead our teams to victory. Shortly after the benefit, our class parents, Mrs. Abbie Langley and Mr. Daniel Bodle, were introduced to us and our class activities really started. Our first get-acquainted Christmas party as Sophs under the guidance of our class teacher and our Sophomore class parents. Mrs. Earl Bernstine and Mr. Roy Peterman, gave us the social experience that helped us make our Junior-Senior Party a gala event. Despite the patriotic decorations reminded us that some of our class members would soon be leaving for the armed forces. Under the direction of Miss Florence Laubscher, Miss Miriam Wendle. Miss Mary Geiger, and Mr. Kerr Miller, some Juniors headed by Charles Cham- berlin, editorg Helen Louise Pechter, associate editorg Hilda Florey, copy read- ing editorg Ruth Lorrah, typewriting editor: Bill Wertz. art editor: and the business managers: Ford Turnbull, Owen Landon, Louis Stanzione, ,lack Clark. and Glenn Williamson published on March 10 a peppy issue of the Cherry and Whitef' Many of us had gained experience last year on the staff of the Sopho- more issue under ,lack Davis as editor, and Phyllis Hicks as associate editor. This year about fifty rootin', tootinu' juniors in the instrumental music classes carrie out in full force, proving to Uncle Ozzie that we are, if not the backbone, at least the ribs of the W. H. S. musical organizations. All year we Juniors. like the remainder of the school, came every Friday morning loaded down with tin cans and waste fats and every Monday bought War bonds and Stamps. Finally came May, the time of the Seniorajunior Prom. For this, the Hgyml' was decorated with our Class colors, rose and gray, and with those of the Senior Class. blue and silver. Although the Seniors seemed happy, many were somewhat sad at the thought of the closeness of parting. Thus the curtain falls on our successful second act in the Williamsport High School. We hope that as Seniors, when the curtain rises for the final act, our leadership will be worthy of those classes which have gone before us. 60 HAY t'. SINGLEY Junior Flnss Teacher JUNIOR CLASS HISTGRY MRS, AISBIE LANGLEY .Iuuior Class Mother ll. E. Il0Ill,li Junior Floss Farther 61 In September 1911-3, as Sophomores we arrived at the Williamsport High School. This, too, was L. F. Derr's first year as principal. According to the old custom, we were immediately classified as little Sophomoresn by the upper classmen. We entered into the war-time activities of W. H. S. wholeheartedly and with endless energy, sold bonds and stamps and collected tin, scrap, and fats. Among those who salvaged the highest number of tin cans were Edward Smead, Joyce Heilhecker, and Elmer Blair. Because of the war, like everyone at Williamsport High we suffered ice-creamlessw Tuesdays. The year was an exciting one. Football games, varsity basketball, and interclass sports helped break the routine of classes. Diane Mellish, Norma Jean Bruno, Joyce Hendren, Barbara Earnest, and Dorothy Yarison backed the teams as lusty cheerleaders. In the varsity sports we also had our heroes. Two up-and-coming basketball stars were Carl De-Pasqua and Dave Barnes. A mild flu epidemic caused many sophomores, about 30'W, to be absent in December, but this did not prevent others of our ranks from working part time in the stores to relieve the help shortage during the Christmas rush, together with the Juniors and Seniors. The week of January 24 brought our first high school mid-years, which proved quite an ordeal. All of us survived, however, and were duly rewarded with a Sophomore party on the 19th of February. Altogether we think our Sophomore year has been fruitful and happy, and we're looking forward eagerly to the chance to participate in more of our school's activities. 62 EDWARD P. Another break from tradition is the introduction of individual pictures of first string football and basketball players, and departmental grouping of the faculty. Through the co-operation of our classmates and the guidance of our faculty advisers, with diligence and effort we have tried to make this yearbook a success. We hope this remembrance of today will serve to remind us of all the things for which we are fighting, and will help us plan a ubetter world for tomorrow? This added money must of necessity be obtained largely by the .le of advertising space. To secure over one hundred individual advertisements demands much sacrifice in time and effort by both the business staff and the adviser. We, of the staff, wish to thank the students and the business firms alike for their very generous and whole-hearted support which helped to make the 1944 LA MEMOIRE one of the most successful in its history. 67 Cherry and White Once again the Cherry and White has achieved new distinction for its outstanding publication. Under the supervision of Miss Laubscher, Miss Geiger, Miss Wendle, and Mr. Miller, the staff put out six excellent issues, including a sixtieth anniversary issue, tracing the history of our school and of the Cherry and While from 1883, up to the present time. Through the untiring efforts of the staff under the supervision of Richard Eschen- bach, editor-in-chief, and Max Gingrich, business manager, we were awarded first group rating at the Pennsylvania School Press Association Contest and second group rating on the War Scrap Book Contest conducted by P. S. P. A. Members of the staff received individual awards. The Cherry and White achieved a signal honor rating as medalist in the Columbia Press Association Contest in March, 194-3. ln November, W. H. S. was host to the regional Pennsylvania Press Conference. Over 275 representatives of schools in this district attended discussion groups for magazine, newspaper, and yearbook problems. The extensive circulation and advertising drives of the business staff, the excellent journalism features and news items, and the high quality of the art work, have all contributed to the high standing of our Cherry and White. 68 I Student Council Under the guidance of its sponsors, Miss M. L. Taylor, Miss M. I. Quigley, Mr. C. F. Derr, and Mr. M. L. Burkhardt, the Student Council began its first semester with Max Mitstifer as president. Ruth Ann Metzger, Marion Protassio, and William Larson were elected vice president, secretary, and treasurer respectively. Max Mitstifer was re-elected as president of the council for the second semester, but was unable to fulfill this olflce as he entered the United States Navy. At a special session during the second semester, the Student Council elected Ben Hackenberry, president, Nancy Plankenhorn, vice presidentg Donna Fulton, secretary, and Williani Larson, treasurer. Dances, radio broadcasts, honor keys, and the checking service at the class parties and basketball games-these were some of the activities sponsored by the Student Council. The sale of war stamps and bonds by the civic committee was the most outstand- ing activity of the Student Council this year. Although the Student Council did not initiate any new ideas, it carried out its usual activities quietly and efficiently. Looking over its past record, we can say that the Student Council is indeed a credit to the school. 69 FOOTBALL SEPTEMBER 25, 1943 - Home ln a Big Fifteen Conference game, Williamsport ushered in the 1943 football season with a surprise victory over Hazleton, 31 to 7. NOVEMBER 13, 1943-Away York handed Williamsport a 6 to 0 defeat in a game lacking in the thrills which usually characterize the meetings between these two teams. Further possible scores by the Roses were prevented by Campbell and the W. H. S. backs who broke down York's vaunted air attack. NOVEMBER 25, 194-3 -Away ln the final game of the season, Billtown received its fourth defeat this season in the traditional Thanksgiving game with Steelton, 3 to 0. Although W. H.
