XANFAIIIROW Superintendent ol' Sehools l'rin1-ipul The High School Victory l'orps, a national voluntary organization for secondary schools designed to mobilize secondary school students for lnore effective preparation for and participation in wartime service. has been one of the major additions to the Wil- liamsport High School this year. The aims of the lforps arc: QIQ The special training of youth for war services that they will be expected to perform after they leave school and Q25 To provide active student participation in the CUIIIIIIIIIIIIYQS war effort while such pupils are still in school. Every high school student is eligible to join the general membership of the Corps, while those within two years of completing high school are eligible for admission to any of the five special service divisions which follow: Qlj Land service, QLZQ Air service, Qiij Sea service, QU Production service, and Q5j Community service. Some of the projects in which the Corps has participated follow: Qlj The collec- tion of over 100,000 pounds of scrap metal, The collection of over 15,000 pounds of tin cans, Qilj The sale of defense savings stamps, The collection of books for the soldiers, and The making of bandages for the lied Uross. In addition to the Victory Corps, another major change in the school has been the setting up ofa special program for all boys who will be eighteen years of age on or before July I, 19-iii. The new schedule for these boys consists of the following: Qlj linglish, four periods per week, Q25 Physics, four periods per week, Qrij Mathematics. four periods per week, Q-l-J An elective subject, which preferably should he additional mathe- matics or science, or perhaps typing for the commercial pupils, four periods per week. Q55 Pre-induction training, four periods per week, and Qlij Physical fitness, four periods per week. In the Pre-induction training, the pupil may select any one ot' the fol- lowing: QU Radio, Q23 Electricity, QCD Auto mechanics, Q4-J Machine shop, or Q5j Pre- flight training, Most of the boys are taking the Pre-induction training on Saturdays. The Physical Fitness program consists of two periods per week of swimming and two periods per week of toughening exercises. The swimming is taken at the Y. M. C. A. pool from 8:00 A. M. to 9:20 A. M. VVe trust that the program is furnishing worth- while training for a need which seems inevitable. J. E. NA NCARROYV. ' op omore C ass H1stor 'l'he class of 1945 entered Williamsport High School feeling as if we could accomplish wonders. but soon discovered that we were only timid, bewildered Sophomores walking fearfully through the halls of our impressive high school, going upstairs when we should be going down, and being seen and teased by Juniors and Seniors who had forgotten that at one time they were in the same state. However. we began to feel more at home when Dr. J. l'Z. Nancarrow appointed our class teacher, Mr. Ray Singley, to help ns over the rough spots and to guide our activities during our three years in lligh School. Our class mother, Mrs. l'1arl Bernstine. and class father, Mr. Roy l'eterman were soon introduced to us. 'l'hen we felt that our headaches were over because we had someone to go to for advice aml guidance. The highlight of the year and our tirst real get-to-gether was our Sophomore Christmas party. For this the gym was gaily decorated with balloons, confetti. aml two large trees covered with brightly col- ored lights. The Orchestra stand was ornamented with a large poster made by I.ois Anderson of the Art Classes. In the refreshment room the work of several of Sophomore art students was also displayed. It did not take us Sophs long to show our stuff, llill Stebbins and Scott Wilhelm excelled in football. Then our hero of the gridiron, Hill Stebbins, proved to ns that he was just as speedy on the basketball floor as he was running down the tield with the pigskin. Cls our Bill going to be a multi- ple letter man?J Then too, let us not forget our two peppy cheerleaders, Mary Ellen Groover aml Nancy Nicoll, who added zip to our rooting section. Of the one hundred ten members of the Band. forty-one are Sophomores. Many of us are also in the Orchestra. Under the supervision of Miss Miriam Wendle, Miss Florence Laubscber, and Miss Mary Geiger. the Solihomoreis published one issue of the Cherry and White, which brought to light some excellent literary am art ta ent. Quite a number from our class were called upon to take part in the Grab Bag. but one of the most outstanding numbers of the whole production was Mr, Gallagher and Mr. Sheehan which was very cleverly performed by John Ulmer and William Sdireyer. Then. too. we Sopbomores have been well represented on the Radio Broadcast given each Thursday morning. In spite of all our extra curricular activities, many of us have managed to maintain Honor Roll standing each month. By now. we feel that we have become a real part of the life of our school. ready to assume leader- ship next year as worthy citizens of W. l-l. S. ANNE flxmroiu-3, '45 Ml S EARL ll. Bl-IRNSTINIC Mll. T e Band One of the largest and most active extracurricular organizations is the 100-piece high school band. Directed by Osborne L. Housel, this group l1as gained state-wide recognition as a very fine playing and march- ing band. Early morning practice on the part of the members is spent daily in order to present their colorful exhibition drills during the football season. In addition to playing for the basketball games, chapel exercises, broadcasts, and scrap drives, they have appeared in the Armistice Day and the Memorial Day parades and have presented programs at various civic functions throughout the city. Music furnished by the band was greatly enjoyed and appreciated by the groups of newly inducted service men upon their departure from the Park Station. The Band also played for the opening of the Red Cross Fund Drive at the Capitol Theatre. The musical highlight of the school year is the Annual Spring Band and Orchestra Concert where a program of classics, light classics, novelties, and soloists is presented. 76 ynip ony Gro l lftt lSplFlIlg' 1n1l pc rsplrlng st111l111t IIlllSlll ins 11n1l1r tl11 1nsp1r111g1l1r11t1on of Nlr II0lIS1l work tog1tl11 1' from All29,'llSt to llllll pt Fllllllllllg' tl11 works ol lS11tl1o1111 Il111k11xsks Mol 1rt llld otl11r well known COIIIPOSL rs 0111 hltx 111str111111 nts uolos 1111111 b1ss WI0llIl's HlltCQ, oboes luseoons horm etc' ow1111l ln tl11 s1l1ool lfl lo 111111 to lllti rc stul .md tilcntcd studcnts for use 111 tl11 m11s11 1l org IIIIL 1t1ons Illl1St st111l111t 11111s111111s r111l tl11 worlm of tl11 gr11t COIIIIJOSK rs of 11111s11 IS 111 n 1 lSll 1l1ss r111ls tl11 works ot tl11 gn lt w r1t1 rs of l1t1r1t11r1 ll11 s1t1sf11t1o11 llllfl 1 1 nr 11111n11 1 1 1 t111r dlorts to produce tl11 lllllSll JG tl11 1o1npos1r lUKllC 1t11l IS 111 1nt111g,1l1l1 11r1h1 1t1o11 ot the f11t tl1 xt IDl1SlCblllldS n1or11l1 Dance QI' 1w ugh schools 1 111 lmo1st ol 1 1 IHCQ or1 11str1 o s111 1 lllf,l 1 1l1l11 r IS o11r o 'NI1rr11111k1rs Its 1111 ll1lltI'S 1r1 saluted from 11tl11r tl11 SXIIlpllOllX or1l1cstr1 or lund and 1llStI'llltCd ln Osborne- I Housel ll11 popul lfltt of tl11 d'1n1c or1l11str1 Wltll tllt st11d1 nts gum 11 ln lts 4Ollt!'llJlltI0llS to tl11 lirllldl Nts tl11 Clflli Bug 'md tl11 popul 1r St111l1 nt f 1111111 ll 1l11111s I1 IS l1d otl11 I'0I'g'lIllLltl0I1'stU r1q111st1tspr1 s1 1111 ll11 'NI1 1111111 1k1 rs l1 ltl 111rn1sl111l 11111s11 for tl11 W 1 st Br 1111 I1 Bos N1 outs Court of Honor 11111 tl11 llllltll gr11l1 1 rt11s lt Curtm 5tLXlllH lllll lioos1x1lt l11111or Iilg'll's D1n111'r IllllSlL w IS 1lso pros11l11l for 1 '1r1o11s 11111 1l11l1s 1111l 1l1111'1l11s As IS trlll Hltll the otl11r two m11s11 1l orglnmfatlone onlx t1r1leQs effort on tl11 p1rt of 11 11l1r 111d mmnlmers l1-1s pro1l1111d Its hnc S111 c-ass D XNCI' 77 1estra estra SX 'VIPHUNX OHL HI Sl HA URCHl1ZS'l R X il' v 1 1 ' I 4 1 1 A . w 1 1' 1.1 1 1 1 . 1 l . . 1 1 I A .
