You, Graduates of the Class of 1942, have now successfully completed the course of education provided in the Vlfilliamsport Public Schools. ive congratulate you sincerely. You have passed another milestone. Now you leave the well-marked highway and must choose your path from many trails. Which one you select will depend not on what you have done, but on what you have become. The world to which you turn is not a happy one. Free men and free institutions are under severe attack. False theories and ideas must be crushed before the world can be rebuilt. Untold misery must be suffered and inflicted before peace comes again. Each of you will have a part, large or small, in preserving American ideals. Each of you will have a part in building anew a happier world. Whatever your part, it is our sincere hope that your years in the Vlfilliamsport Public Schools have fitted you to play it honorably. honestly. courageously and well. A. M. WEAVER J. E. NANCARIIOW superintendent of Schools Principal 4 0 Administration It was on Sunday, December 7, 19411, about 3:00 P. M. that the news concerning the dastardly and destructive attack on Pearl Harbor came to us by radio. On the next Monday, the student body listened as the President recommended to Congress that war be declared upon Japan. Later we learned that Paul Benavel Free, a gradu- ate of the Williamsport High School in 1938, had been killed in action at Pearl Har- bor. Sometime later, it was learned that the soldier who had remained on duty after regular hours and who had discovered and reported to his superior that a number of planes were headed toward Hawaii, was none other than Joseph L. Lockard of the class of 194-0. The Williamsport High School honors and respects the memory of Paul Free and congratulates ,loe Lockard on his achievement and selection for the Congressional Medal of Honor. ln such a world, the administrative work at the High School has been tempered to fit the constantly changing conditions. Shelters have been provided for pupils in case of an air raid, and weekly drills are held. Practically all of the teachers on the faculty have taken the standard First Aid Course provided by the Red Cross. First Aid kits have been prepared to be used in case of an emergency. Members of the faculty have given of their services in helping to train the air wardens. Teachers have modified their courses to fit the war needs. In addition, movies and outside speakers have provided information during the assembly program. We trust that each pupil will co-operate in this program to fit himself so that he may be able to serve America. J. E. NANCARROW. 10
