Since in this year our great nation has again become embroiied in a bitter worid contiict for the defense of Democracy, we feei the urgency of emphasizing the patriotic duty oi Americans to support the great cause to which we are committed. in presenting this year book, it has been our purpose to pro- vide an account of important and interesting events of our school iife. The ensuing pages furnish, by picture and printed word, scenes and records of activities showing many phases oi the schooi iife which has been ours. M. that the news concerning the dastardly and destructive attack on Pearl Harbor came to us by radio. On the next Monday, the student body listened as the President recommended to Congress that war be declared upon Japan. Later we learned that Paul Benavel Free, a gradu- ate of the Williamsport High School in 1938, had been killed in action at Pearl Har- bor. Sometime later, it was learned that the soldier who had remained on duty after regular hours and who had discovered and reported to his superior that a number of planes were headed toward Hawaii, was none other than Joseph L. Lockard of the class of 194-0. The Williamsport High School honors and respects the memory of Paul Free and congratulates ,loe Lockard on his achievement and selection for the Congressional Medal of Honor. ln such a world, the administrative work at the High School has been tempered to fit the constantly changing conditions. Shelters have been provided for pupils in case of an air raid, and weekly drills are held. Practically all of the teachers on the faculty have taken the standard First Aid Course provided by the Red Cross. First Aid kits have been prepared to be used in case of an emergency. Members of the faculty have given of their services in helping to train the air wardens. Teachers have modified their courses to fit the war needs. In addition, movies and outside speakers have provided information during the assembly program. We trust that each pupil will co-operate in this program to fit himself so that he may be able to serve America. J. E. NANCARROW. 10 You, Graduates of the Class of 1942, have now successfully completed the course of education provided in the Vlfilliamsport Public Schools. ive congratulate you sincerely. You have passed another milestone. Now you leave the well-marked highway and must choose your path from many trails. Which one you select will depend not on what you have done, but on what you have become. The world to which you turn is not a happy one. Free men and free institutions are under severe attack. False theories and ideas must be crushed before the world can be rebuilt. Untold misery must be suffered and inflicted before peace comes again. Each of you will have a part, large or small, in preserving American ideals. Each of you will have a part in building anew a happier world. Whatever your part, it is our sincere hope that your years in the Vlfilliamsport Public Schools have fitted you to play it honorably. honestly. courageously and well. Main- tenance service aides! Nurses, aides! First aid! What an addition to an already crowded extra-curricular school life! However this is just another illustration that school should prepare you for a well-rounded life. But what a different life for which you are being pre- pared! What a contrast to the life of peace and happi- ness which all of us had hoped would be your portion in life! Now we are a world at war, and the disruptions which all of us suffer in our daily lives must needs be reflected in your school life. It is utterly impossible for us to teach you just how you should act in each of these difficult situations. But, RUSSELL H- RTW-WS as teachers, we can only wish that we have taught you how to think in the hope that right thinking will culminate in right actions. Many of you, through your club programs, athletic teams, musical or- ganizations, and kindred groups have learned the fundamental principles of co-operation, fair play, team work and good sportsmanship. Utterly vital as these were in your school life, they become, definitely, the keystone upon which rests the ultimate victory which all of us so desperately desire. Senior Class 'lll'lll'lll'l' What your future tasks may be no one is able now to predict. This we do know: that if all of us will take our W. H. S. to mean not only Williams- port High School, but also Willing, Helpful Service, the tasks will the sooner be ended. '6Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith let us to the end dare to do our duty as we understand itf,-A. Fuller from the book hy Mark Twain, was presented in the high school auditorium April 10 and ll. Mrs. Elizabeth Reed Mann directed the performance which centered around Hank Bennett, a wise-cracking, worldly young technician who manufactured plenty of laughs, after touching a Hdanger-explosivesw switch on his radio, and finding him- self in King Arthur's Court i11 the year 523. However, he erformed a 'gcou d7etat lm careful an lication of histor , set P P Y I P Y himself up as dictator, and put the country on a twentieth century basis complete with secretaries, telephones, airplanes, and romance. The terrible climax occurred when Hank, after recovering and realizing that it was the shock from the radio which had caused his illusion, promptly touched that same gadget again. Yours is a noble heritage, and for your glorious courage the Class of 1942 salutes you. 51 X , W 7, First Row, Left to Right-Ann Carter, Seeretaryg Ben Rowman, Treasnrcrg Frances Caneelliere, President: Harriett Heath, Vice President Second RowfAnn Alston, William Buchman, C. R. Snyder, Class Teachcrg Emery Smith, Vivian Stutzman, Dorothy Brobst Junior Class Histor The 6-L2 melnbers of the class of 1943 broke away from the barrier with a tlying start with class teacher. Mr. C. R. Snyder, and class parents, Mrs. Walton Geiger and Mr. Donald Sears, holding the reins, to elect Francis Cancelliere, president, Harriet Heath, vice presidentg Ann Carter, secretary: and Ben Bowman, treasurer. Groolned by Mr. C. R. Snyder and the co-trainers, Mrs. A. C. Farrington and Mr. W. P. Baclnnan, and jockeyed by the decoration, welfare and dues committees, the class consisting of 620 members received valuable training by arranging for their Christmas party and preparing an issue of the Cherry and White on the proving grounds during their sophomore year. They were not to be found wanting in athletic prowess, for sophomore names were on the football roster, and soplis carried the class colors, scarlet and gold, out on the basketball court. The Junior Class. as they reached the first turn, presented Birch, world's foremost xylophonist, as the stars of their Junior Benetit. As the class rounded the half-way pole, they brought forth the Junior-Senior Party. Arranging for this affair were various committees of the l'arent-Teachers Association directed by the class parents. At the three-quarters mark came the Junior Issue of the Clierry mul White with the jockeys, Samuel Youngnian, editor-in-chief: Ruth Moon and Francis Cancelliere, associate editors: Carl Gehron, make-up editor: Fradell Staiman, copyreading editor: Jean White, feature editorg Kathleen Brooks, literary editor: and Lamont Dill. lnnnor editor. Proving that the juniors have physical talent as well as mental ability, Paul Trost, Tom Hinkleinan, Fred Wright, Jim Yerkes. and Robert Shatto dug their cleats in the turf of the gridiron, and Paul Trost. George Brunner, Don Crossley. and Buzzy Winters swished the basketball through the hoops. At the end of a close race the girl champions crowned were: Hazel Huhler, tennis: Francis Fink, ping pongg and Betty Gee and Constance Isabel, sliumeboard. The musical-minded juniors could well have tooted their own horns and sung their own praises for they performed nobly. There were juniors in the band, dance orchestra, symphony orchestra, and in the glee clubs. Coming down the home stretch, the second-year class ran neck and neck with the seniors in arrang- ing for the social highlight of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom. held in June. It is expected that. due to the national emergency and present war conditions, some juniors will be scratched from the 1'oll, and the size of the class, now 565, will be reduced to approximately 500 pupils in the senior year. Thus, as the junior class goes to pasture for the summer, they may be confident that they will not be a dark horse next year, but an odds on favorites. .lmw Wmrn. 'HL G. ROBERT SNYDER MRS. XVALTON B. GEIGER DONALD F. SEARS Class Teacher Class Mother Class Father 52 Sophomore Class Caught in the September draft! Over seven hundred of us rookies milled around our new camp, steering clear of the corporals and sergeants who lounged along the barracks wall, viewing us buck privates with the supercilious air of those who belong. After a week or two, when we were able to find our way to drill and to distinguish between mess and assembly calls, the company was organized and set marching by the captain, Miss Rose Lehman, and her lieutenants, Mrs. Olive Keiser and Mr. Richard Williamson. From members of the ranks, committees were chosen for dues, welfare, colors, and party decorations. ln order to become physically lit for duty, many of us flocked to the recreation hall to engage in sports-football, volleyball, tennis, bowling, shuilleboard, ping pong, swimming, basketball, and track. In fact so many rookies excelled in so many sports, cheered on by Privates Jane Reid, Rita Logue, Shirley Wright, and Shirley Walker-that we could never begin to name them all. After several months of drilling and marching, we were rewarded for our good work with a Christmas Party-big trees, gaily colored lights, boughs of evergreens, Santa Claus with popcorn balls, and tables decorated with our colors, blue and silver. This first off-duty event, generously given by the P. T. A., turned out to be a great success. Later in the year our company proved its versatility by publishing an issue of the camp news, the Cherry and White, and applying our talents in a radio broadcast. By the end of the term many of us had shown the makings of officers, willing to step forward and accept any responsibility. Some had even attained stripes-in the form of W's for their merits, and all of us had learned to step more briskly and to work together with the new buddies we had found. llIAXINE LOCKARD, '44. Much care and effort have been given in an endeavor to produce one of the best annuals in the history of LA MEMOIRE. ln this, we are confident our goal has been achieved. The success of this yearis work has been due largely to the co-operation of staff members, senior class teacher, and faculty advisers. Not only have we attempted to maintain the high standards set forth in previous years, but also to incorporate some new features in the hook. We sincerely hope that these changes will meet with the approval of the student body. Few if any of our readers realize the many hours of work and worry whieh our staff has gone through to make this book a financial success. Time and effort were needed to accomplish the advertising and subscription campaigns. Hearty thanks is due the business men and student lmody whose splendid financial eo-operation made the hook possible. 59 Cherry and White At the beginning of the new term the prospects of seeing the familiar Cherry and White in the hands of its subscribers seemed doubtful. The increased cost of paper and the added difliculty of finding a new publisher were the main obstacles to be over- come. After the Grit Publishing Company agreed to handle the printing, the student body responded to the pleas of the business staff by giving full support to the sub- scription drive, thus enabling the Cherry and White to maintain its enviable record of 47 consecutive years of publication. Although there had been some doubt as to the continuance of the magazine, the staff planned, according to schedule, the Football Issue which came out soon after the successful subscription drive was completed. The traditional Thanksgiving Issue was distributed the day before vacation and the Christmas Issue, bearing a beautiful cover done by the silk-screen process was published a month later. After a two-month pause for mid-year examinations, the journalists of the Junior Class took over for their issue, and the sophomores had their chance the following month. ln June, the Senior Staff completed its year's work with the Graduation Issue. Again this year, the Cherry and White received honors in both the Columbia and Pennsylvania School Press Associations, ranking Hrst in its class in both competi- tions. Ten Cherry and White contributors also received individual awards in the latter contest. Special mention should be made of the beautiful cover designs which were done by members of the Art and Printing Departments. As the school year closes, the staff of the Cherry and White expresses sincere appreciation for the fine co-operation of both faculty and student body, and earnestly hopes that the admirable career of the publication may continue for many years. 60 Under the supervision of Miss M. L. Taylor, Miss M. I. Quigley, and Mr. L. F. Derr the Student Council has completed another year of service to the school in its many and diversified activities. The organization operated under the leadership of William Stuempfle, president for both terms. Other officers for the first semester were Pat Madenfort, vice president, Ralph Dougherty, treasurer, and Callie McHaffie, sec- retary. Holding these positions the second semester were The Council sponsored many more dances in the gymnasium this year. Money from these dances helped the Council meet its various financial obligations. Another source of income was the checking of wraps at the basektball games and class parties. The activities of the club committee deserve recognition. The committee made a special effort to have club membership cards issued earlier so that pictures could be taken more promptly for the yearbook. Many students were helped in retrieving lost books, gym clothes, pocketbooks, scarfs, etc., by the efforts ofthe Lost and Found Department of the Council. Ushers were provided by the Service Committee for football games, class benefits, basketball games and Parent-Teacher meetings. One of the best-known projects of the Council is the weekly broadcast. In this way the organization unearths a good deal of student talent. Looking back over the year the Student Council records reveal a term of achieve- ment which indeed makes this organization a credit to the school. 61 FDUTBALI. SEPTEMBER 20 Because of the lightness and inexperience of this year's squad, Coach Pursell hoped only for a ugood showing. But they came through in fine form in the opener by pounding the Orange and Black eleven of Jersey Shore to a 37-O victory. OCTOBER 4 Clearly outsmarting the Easton eleven, Williamsport won by a score of 14-7. The teams were tie 7-7 at the half, but the Cherry and White came through in the last quarter with three minutes to go when Mapes ran 18 yards for a touchdown, and Switzer, as usual, drop-kicked the extra point. OCTOBER 18 On a wet, muddy field the Millionaires proved their skill by triumphing over the Lebanon Cedars, 34-0. Held down the first half to a single tally by Smith, the Cherry and White put forth a four touchdown surge in the second half as Stover and Switzer each crossed the goal line twice. OCTOBER 25 The odds were against Billtown as the Cherry and White went down in defeat to a heavier John Harris team by a score of 6-2. Scoring a touchdown in the first half, the Harris squad maintained its lead to the end, displaying a winning line of defense by holding back three terrific W. H. S. rallies. 62 NOVEMBER 1 On the second rainy day of the season, the Millionaires came back after their last week's defeat to top the Scranton Tech team 13-0. W. H. S. tore through the Scranton defense easily as Stover, in the first quarter, and Mapes, in the third, scored the touchdowns, with Wright and Hinkleman deserving credit for their ball-carrying. NOVEMBER 8 Set back in the first three quarters by fumbles, W. H. S. finally came through in the last few minutes of play to trim the William Penn eleven, 7-0. NOVEMBER 15 Before the powerful onslaught of the undefeated team of Altoona High, W. H. S. suffered a decisive loss, losing 28-7. Outmatched in weight, speed, and deception, the Cherry and White provided little resistance to the Maroon squad, although they exhibited a valiant line of defense. NOVEMBER 27 Climaxing the season, the traditional Thanksgiving Day game between W. H. S. and Steelton ended in defeat for the Millionaires as Steelton scored a 13-7 victory. A wild lateral in the third quarter proved disastrous as the Steelers recovered the ball and Cernugel scored the winning touchdown, stand- ing up. DECEMBER 19-Although the Cherry and White attack was improved, it still wasn't strong enough to overcome Allentown who defeated us 34-28. DECEMBER 30-Caletti starred brilliantly for YV. H. S., but Harrisburg packed too much power and easily handed us a 23-56 defeat. JANUARY 6-Losing again but putting up a good defensive fight, the Cherry and White fell to Pottsville 19-23. JANUARY 10--At least breaking its losing streak, W. H. S. defeated Allentown 33-32. The Millionaires proved their ability by bearing down in the last quarter to hold back the Canary challenge. JANUARY 13-Pottsville found little difliculty in trimming W. H. S. 35-51 on their own home floor. JANUARY 17-The second win of the season for the Cherry and White who led Luzerne High practically the entire game. The final score was 32-16. JANUARY 20-Coming through in one of the best games of the year, W. H. S. tallied 36 points to 27 for Shamokin as Lear Herrold and Stabley shared the lime light. JANUARY 24-A sophomore Nickie Cioiii came into prominence in spite of his small size, as Williamsport topped Scranton Tech 45-30. The husky Scranton team mus- tered a strong offense and defense to make this an exciting game from start to finish. 64 First Row, Left to Right-Nicliolus Ciofh, Dick Galetti, Melvin Crist, Mnnng.:er. Second Ikon'-George Bruner, Merlin Stabley, Lear Hen-old, Jack Mnrqu r lt JANUARY 27-The Cherry and White easily emerged victor in their clash with Sunbury. The game ended 39-29. JANUARY 30-Despite the absence of three Steelton regulars from the line-up, the Steam Rollers rallied successfully to end the W. H. S. winning streak 45-37. FEBRUARY 3-A lively crowd and fast St. Joseph team nosed out the Millionaires 21-25. The loss of Stabley early in the game, left a dent in our line-up which we found hard to place. FEBRUARY 6-The Stabley-Caletti combination, ably assisted by Lear Herrold func- tioned too smoothly for the strong Altoona team, which before losing to Williams- port 41-26, had lost only one game. FEBRUARY 10-ln the return game with Hazleton, W. H. S. lost a decisive battle netting only 26 points against 50 for Hazleton. FEBRUARY 14-Trailing the miners until the last quarter, the Cherry and White sudden- ly rallied to lead Scranton Tech by the narrow margin of 31-29. FEBRUARY 17-The 1Vlillionaires fared badly on the Shamokin floor as they crashed to a 25-46 defeat. FEBRUARY 20-W. H. S. came out on the adverse side of a gruelling battle with the Altoona team, suffering a 43-31 loss. FEBRUARY 21-On the rebound from the loss to Altoona, the Cherry and White out- pointed Scranton Central 39-23 with Stabley and Caletti accounting for 30 points. FEBRUARY 27-A sudden rally in the second half proved to be the turning point for W. H. S. who subdued Steelton High 30-21. FEBRUARY 28-As a result of accurate shooting, the Cherry and White finished the sea- son with a bank by topping Sunbury 56-32. 65 Volleyball Team Volleyball team won the District 4' P. l. A. GOLF SWIMMING 67 The Band Upholding a state-wide reputation the 110 members of this yearis Williams- port High School Band developed a field drill of intricate maneuvers and con- tinuous playing to entertain football fans. It performed at all home games and several away games. After the football season, the band turned to symphonic music in prepara- tion for broadcasts and Music Week programs. Nearly every morning the band played a march while the students entered and left the auditorium for chapel exercises. It appeared at basketball games, marched in parades, and played for public patriotic ceremonies. The band also furnished music for commencement exer- cises and concert engagements. 68 Symphony Drchestra All symphonic instruments represented by the 50 members directed by Mr. Osborne L. At the end of their junior year, about one hundred students try out, but only those having good vocal range and the ability to read music and to sing in pitch with correct intonation are chosen. Two rehearsals a week are required. From the outstanding voices discovered in the club, the winners of the Dickinson Junior College vocal scholarship are selected. Soloists and choruses for the Senior Day operetta are also chosen from this organization. A number of broadcasts presented during the year, sacred concerts at Christmas and Easter with the choir in vestments, the L'Grab Bagf' music week programs, and concerts for various churches and other organizations of the city, are some of the activities of the Senior Club. It also forms the nucleus for our group singing in chapel and renders the vocal numbers in the Baccalaureate and Commencement programs. The director is Kathryn M.
