fr- -Y -9 J WW K.A.MzZ, WE DEDICATE THIS With a thought for the future, We have com- piled the seventeenth edition of LA MEMOIRE to refresh your memories and bring before you, time and time again, fond recollections of your achievements and activities in ,ik our good, old Alma Mater. In addition, We have painted a portrait of the entire school life during the years at Williamsport High School which We hope will be indelibly imprinted on the minds of each and every member of our class. sim 1937 'YN :Nu 4.x QQ.. -1 'J-v K . Weaver Prinripal Superinlemlent of Schools a Q Administration The flood of March 18, 1936 will long be remembered by students, teachers, and parents alike. In the Williamsport High School building such rooms as the band room, the locker rooms, the boiler room, and the gymnasium were completely flooded. On the ground floor the water reached a height of forty-eight inches, and in the cafeteria and kitchen a depth of six feet was recorded. The bright spot in the catastrophe was the spirit with which the students, teachers and parents attacked the problem of reconstruction. Through the co-operation of the entire faculty, the janitors, thirty CCC boys and ten PWA workers, the high school building was cleaned, sterilized, and made habitable within. a period of two weeks. This flood has taught many persons that much damage can be prevented through proper precautionary measures. In the high school, a detailed plan of procedure has been set up for each room which was affected by the flood. The faculty has been organ- ized into groups of four each and each group has been assigned to a specific duty in one of the rooms. These committees will attempt to remove all furniture and fixtures to a higher level. In addition to this precaution, new steel furniture is rapidly replacing wooden desks, cupboards, chairs and tables. We hope that another flood will not visit us but we believe in the motto, Be Prepared. AAAAMH4-gf 10 The xViHi?lI'flSPO1't School iiuzwd ' Second Row-Dan D. Ford Class Father Class Teacher Class Mother The Senior Executive Committee The Senior Executive Committee, comprising the elected ofhcers and eight other members of the class, has planned and to some extent directed class activities. They decided the amotint of class dues, carefully budgeted funds for the Senior Class, and acted on the committee which selected commencement announcements. Plans for Senior Day, the party, and the prom came under their supervision as did various matters concerning class expenses, caps and gowns, and the class song. To those who have cooperated in helping to serve faithfully the interests of our class, they wish to express deep appreciation. For their generous assistance in all their plans, they are especially grateful to Mrs. William Ford, Class Mother, and Mr. Charles Askey, Class Father. So we can safely say that our committee has had a busy season, and a successful one because of the constant guidance and edicient energy of Mr. Bastian. To him goes all the credit that this class may have won for itself in planning and completing so successful a year. To the Members of the Class of Nineteen Thirty-Seven: As sponsor and class, we have labored together for three years. Now, with deepest regret, I realize that the time of parting draws near. My association with you has been inspiring and stimulating, and I am loath to relinquish it. You have displayed great conhdence, initiative, and cooperation in conducting all your class functions. You may point with pride to your record in upholding all the best traditions of your high school. May you carry forward into your future life all the ennobling qualities you have manifested here, and secure for yourselves the success and happiness you deserve. Kasper Kroggins fVictor Gardnerj, the Codfish King, and jerry Kennedy Qlirnest DeFrainJ, his ad- vertising manager, decide to tell the world about Kroggins Kippered Kodfish by way of radio. Joe Brown QKerlin Farwellj, owner of Station XVTNT, puts on a test broadcast for them. If the program is a success, the resulting contract will enable him to keep his station, formerly owned by Lysander Phipps Qjoy Dewaldj. However, when it is revealed that Mitzi the Mystery Soprano, star of the program, is none other than Mrs. Kroggins Qllharlotte Adelmanj, who has more ambition than talent, jerry promises to keep her off the air. True to his promise, with the help of Banks QHarvey Stadonj, he locks her in an elevator and makes Mitzi QMarcella Sniithj, the telephone operator, sing in her place. just as the program is con- cluded Mrs. Kroggins rushes into the studio. She is allowed to sing, but over a dead mike, a fact which she does not discover until a telephone call reveals the ruse. Angrily, Mrs. Kroggins orders jerry discharged and the contract broken. Mitzi quits her job and gives jerry the cold shoulder. Things now look pretty dark for joe and jerry, when at Mrs. Kroggins' New Year's Party, Phipps arrives to offer Joe a clear title to the station in exchange for the contract to the singer he heard on the program. Wlieit he hears the Mitzi CMrs. Krogginsj, that he has just bought, start to sing, he tears up the contract. Wlien he offers the real Mitzi the part in his revue, she accepts and again things look dark. The silver lining is supplied by Throkmorton Cblaek Agnorj, who brings the news that .loc is the heir to a large estate, including all the patent rights to the process of Kippering Kodfish. In this way, the situation is reversed and joe dictates a happy ending. W'e wish to thank Miss Lehman, Miss Maust, Miss Riggle and Mr. Housel for their expert direction and assistance in making this musical comedy a rollicking success. 52 The Class Play Cast Quay, Sesinger, Askey, Babb, Collins, lluling, Iiiiiglit, lliinert, Eberhairt, Gulliver, Iizmffiinui, Jonas, Mix, Iil?lCllil!'fl, Moore, Troutinan, Allen, Janet, S116-river, Hazen, Andrews, liaitlnnoll The Senior Class Play Pomander Walkf' that unusual and novel presentation of the Seniors, was highly acclaimed for its delightful portrayal of quaint English life in 1805. What a charming glimpse was afforded of the sheltered lives of those neighborly inhabitants of Pomander Walk, England, who lived each others lives so amusingly. Who would have guessed that the romance of petite Marjolaine Lachesnais and Jack Sayle would be climaxed in the reunion of Madame, Marjory,s mother, and Lord Otford, jack's father, who were sweet- hearts in their youth, but who had been estranged by the Hrst Jack Sayle's ambitious father who sought a wealthy wife for his son. The tangled lives and numerous romances of Pomander have finally interwoven harmoniously with the help of a few dumb animals. Barbara and Basil were taught love by the Usouvenir parrot, Mrs. Poskett's dear Semproniusu proved matchmaker for the Poskett-Antrobus combination. Witli Marjolaine in Jackbs arms, Madame and Lord Otford planning their postponed happiness, Mrs. Poskett and Sir Peter strolling romantically, Barbara and Basil, Uharking to the nightingalef' the eyesore at his post enticing the hsh, and life going on smoothly, could there be anyone who would not uwish they live happily ever after ? The prologue was performed by Betty Moore, Leroy Quay, and Harold Hazen. The cast was composed of Mary Ellen Gulliver, Marjolaine Lachesnaisg jack Kauffman, John Sayle, jr., Constance Fay Sesinger, Madame Laehesnaisg Williani Askey, Lord Otford Uohn Sayle, Sr.jg Lorraine Rimert, Mrs. Poskettg Markin Knight, Sir Peter Antrobus, Juanita Troutman, Barbara Pennymintg John Allen, Basil Pringle, Sue Rath- mell, Ruth Pennymintg Robert Andrews, Mr. Brooke Hoskyng Edith Babb, The Honorable Caroline Thringg joan Spencer, Nanetteg Jack Reichard, Reverend Dr. Sternroyd, Daniel Collins, the eyesoreg Cloyd Eberhart, Jim, Sam Janet, the lamplighter, Clarence Huling, the muffin-man, Ardella Mix, Jane, and Margaret Jonas, Abi ail. gThe entire Senior Class expresses gratitude to Mrs. Elizabeth Reed Mann, whose supervision contributed so greatly to the playis success. The class also appreciates the cooperation of these various factors: the publicity department, the property committee, the makeup staff, Mrs. Vera Watkins, costumer, the chaperons and assisting teachers. For all the encouragement and assistance which was proffered from every direction by the public itself, appreciation is unlimited. 53 1937 Dr. M. C. Ellis Mr. P. B. Cooley Mrs. L. C. Vollmer Class Father Claxx Teacher Class Mofber The Class of IQ38 4 Juniors! Think of it! Dignilied, serious-minded, scholarly juniors! Was it only last year that Sophomore! was yelled so scornfully at us? This seems so long ago that it is almost possible that We have treated our underclassmen with fully as much scornful attention as we ourselves received. But they took it and liked it, as did We. Early in the term our class. met for the first time together as Juniors, and we elected the following olhcers: President, Frank Schneiderg Vice President, Elinor Derrg Secretary, Eleanor Herrmang and Trea- surer, Claude Liebensberger. Shortly after this meeting Mr. Nancarrow appointed Mrs. L. C. Vollmer and Dr. Milton C. Ellis as class mother and futher. And so, with these class olicers and parents, and our class teacher, Paul B. Cooley, to guide us, we took a deep breath and plunged into the impending storm of school activities. The First week in january found us madly rushing about school trying to convince the other students that they should not miss Charles Laughton's great performance in Rembrandt, this year's junior beneit. Then came the Mid-Years! And as the dawn follows the storm, so did the annual Junior-Senior Party follow this nerve-wracking ordeal. In the cafeteria decorated with cherry and white hearts, We danced our worries away to the rhythm of the I.yconians. The Bingo rooms were popular too. Could it have been the lollipops? Our junior issue of the Cherry and Wliite was edited by Frank Schneider and made its appearance in March. This issue featured colleges and was a credit to the class, the school, and the staff. And so, here we are, at the end of a successful year as juniors and facing the misty coming year as Seniors. But we of the Class of Nineteen Thirty-Eight are optimistic. As we look through the mist into the coming year, we can discern a play being staged . . . 21 vacation . . . a long procession of solemn students in caps and gowns .... W'e, a group of six hundred and fifty, launched the ship of our sophomore year on September eighth, nineteen hundred and thirty-six. Everything was shipshape when our Admiral, Mr. Nancarrow, announced to us that our Captain was to be Miss Clara M. Casner and that our two Hrst mates were to be Dr. W. Clair Bastian and Mrs. C. F. Losch, class father and mother. The sailing was very smooth up to and including our Sophomore Party on December nineteenth when all the yearlings became acquainted with each other to the tunes of Mr. Housel's Dance Orchestra. After having been furloughed during Christmas vacation, we went back to work at the rigging which finally got us over the tempestuous, stormy seas of mid-year examinations. Our class colors, navy blue and White, which had been gallantly flying over us throughout the year, were sadly brought to half-mast on March second when one of our beloved teachers, Mr. John A. Davis, was taken from our midst. Calm seas prevailed until the end of the year except for an occasional squall during final examinations. Throughout the year the upper classmen were very much surprised by the high scholastic standing of all the under classmen and by the athletic ability shown by our representatives in both football and basket- ball, to say nothing of the prominent parts taken by members of our class in the Grab Bag and broadcasts. With happy memories of our 1936-37 cruise we will be eager to know in which direction the compass points for our voyages during the next two years. My first year as a teacher and football coach has been one of the happiest I have ever experienced. Many friendships have been formed which will continue through the years. Your faithfulness and loyalty have been apparent both in the class room and on the athletic field. During the past season, our football squad, which appeared mediocre at the beginning, developed into a team of championship caliber. This was due to your enthusiasm, to the fine spirit of cooperation and the will to win, which were exemplified by the members of the squad. Millionaires, after Wading through ri tremendously heavy schedule, turned in a record for thc year of ten wins and a lone loss. As the lusty chorus of cheers dies away in memory, let us review the 1937 season. Canton's light team became W'illiamsport's first prey to the tune of 39-0. Following this a persistent Jersey Shore team met defeat at our hands, 19-0. Lack of practice, due to unfavorable weather, cost Billtown her lone upset. . Scranton Tech, outpassed and outclnssed, defeated our boys, 6-0. The Millionaires luckily defeated Sunbury, 13-7, and following that Montgomery was crushed, 26-0. On October 24, Coach Pursell and his boys journeyed to Harrisburgxwith one intention-to win. We were successful by Winning, 13-0. - Refreshed from their first conquest over John Harris, Lock Haven was trimmed 20-O, and the saying became Beat William Penn. On November 7, the William Penn Tiger was tamed, 19-0. Lancaster fell victims to the smooth going Billtown team, 32-6. ' Milton was the pre-turkey day brittle and the Varsity and J. V. team, with the aid of the fourth stringers, had a delightful feast, 73-0. Williamsport and Steelron came to grip on Thanksgiving Day and Williamsport had the better grip. Steelton was defeated 19-7. That game, plus the element of fighgj that Billtown teams are noted for, had a place in the excellent 1937 season. K t The Footlmll Lettermen Third Row Smith. W'ith only two lettermen returning, Coach Morgan had to depend on speed and deception to win games. ' In the opening tilt of the season, the team faced Hazleton and was defeated, 33-14. A tall, rangy Scranton Tech team handed us our second defeat, 47-24. In the most exciting home fracas of the season, W'illiamsport topped St. Joseph, 33-31. Our winning streak continued with a 33-29 victory over Sunbury's Owls at Sunbury and we then returned home to take the City Championship by trouncing South Wil- liamsport, 51-19. NWilliamsport's utwo point jinx began to take effect at the next two games for We dropped both. Scranton Central won, 34-30 and Altoona eked out :1 close one over our boys, 27-26. liewildered by a dazzling passing attack, W'illiainsport suffered their worst trouncing at the hands of Shamokin, 42-18. WT then journeyed to Steelton but were defeated, 50-20. Upon our return home the jinx again began to haunt us and we dropped two more thrillers. Nanticolte won, 24-22 while, although we were greatly improved and dominated the play for the major part of the game, Stcelton again beat us 36-34. Sunbury next journeyed to Willianisiutirt and revenged their earlier defeat, 36-33. Scranton Central and Nantieoke brought back memories of the jinx, The former defeated us, 29-27, and Nanticolce won for a second time, 35-32. At last the losing streak was broken when Billtown, using only five men, beat Shamoltin on the Greyhounds floor, 38-26. ln the last two games of the season, Hazleton beat us, 26-20 and Altoona won again, 36-17. Although the season was somewhat disastrous, the team showed fight and courage at evcry stage of each game. Directed by William Askey, the Cherry and White staff got off to a running start and produced in the fall a Football number that surpassed the opening editions of other years. Living up to the promise of that issue there came in rapid succession a Thanksgiving number, a colorful Christmas edition, in blue and white, and as a climax, a Mystery number which was crammed with superstitions, murder stories, fortune telling, and interviews with people connected with police work. Proof of the quality of the 1936-37 Cherry and White was offered by the results of the meeting of the Pennsylvania State Press Association. At this conference, which was held December 28, 1936, at Hershey, Pa., the Cherry and White won second place among the magazines of its class. Marietta Cogswell's story, The Ghost of Barnsdale Manor, won honorable mention as did Claude Leibcnsbergeris art work and janet Brown's feature article on the new gym. The Cherry and White was also entered, for the first time, in the Columbia contest. Written and edited by a staff of seniors, juniors, and sophomores, and capably supervised by Miss Florence Laubscher, Mr. Hayes Person, Mr. John Holland, Miss Miriam Wendle, and Miss Mary Geiger, the Cherry and White, in rounding out another year as the chief publication of W. H. S., is confident that it has maintained the standard set up by its predecessors and hopes that the Cherry and White of the future will continue to grow in the high quality of its workmanship. At the second meeting, Miss Lehman, adviser of the club, gave a very entertaining talk on some of the current plays on Broadway which she had previously attended. Mrs. Charles Mantinband spoke to the club at its third meeting, and at another, Charlotte Adelman entertained with some amusing readings. One of the most interesting meetings was held March 10, when Mrs. E. R. Mann, the director for the Senior Class Play this year, spoke about 'iPomander Walk, the play chosen to be presented by the Class of '37. A majority of the members of the Senior Dramatic Club have been chosen for parts in either the Class Play or the Senior Day Operetta, and have been on various play committees throughout the school year. The Junior Dramatic Club When the Junior Dramatic Club organized in October, nearly one hundred and twenty students joined. At the first meeting the following oflieers were elected: President, Donald Bastiang Vice President, Jane Sherrerg Secretary, Sara Phillipsg Treasurer, Charles Spring. The Crooked-Mouthed Lampi' was presented by several members of the club on one of the Christmas broadcasts. Among the other interesting plays presented at the meetings were Tickets Please and Spark- in'. Current plays were reviewed and theater news was given. During the year a subscription to the UTheater Arts Monthlyf' and several new plays were purchased. The Junior Dranmtie Club Viftli How-lirzir-liluill. Fraser. Lollivlt, Jaffe, Ili-iss-r. Mitstifer. Housel. The band during this year has shown great improvement over previous years and has had many activities. Besides playing at all the football games, except Scranton, it attended the basketball games. It also marched in the Odd Fellows' Parade, American Legion Parade, Gay'Nineties' Parade, Memorial Day Parade, Elks' Parade, and the Firenien's Parade. Also, several concerts were given, including one for the American Legion, two for the Consistory, one during Music W'eek, and a benefit concert with the Willianisport Choral Art Club. Commencement was the last appearance of the band as a unit. The Symphony Orchestra also gave a splendid account of itself, playing for several important broad- casts, a concert during Music Week, and in cooperation with the Senior Chorus at several different outside functions. The Symphony Orchestra finished its musical activities on the occasion of the Class of 1937's Baccalaureate Services. The cream of the school's musicians-the Merrymakei's played many times and were received with enthusiasm. The Mc-rrymakersu pleased the Sophomores at their Class Party, and were enjoyed by all participants of the Student Council Dances. This organization also supplied music for Fathers' Night at Stevens Junior High School, for the Grab Bag, Industrial Teachers' Banquet, Pomander Walk,,, l,arry Kelley's Testimonial Dinner, and a program for Music Xveek, We feel sure that this year's musical organizations have been better received by their audiences than any other in the history of W'illiamsport High School's musical activities. 72 The Student Council The Student Council has completed another successful year under the leadership of the faculty advisers, Miss Casner, Miss Taylor and Mr. Derr. The same oHicers served during both semesters. The President, George Riegel, was elected by last year's council and at the first meeting this year, Charles Bieber was elected Vice President with Betty Mae Leibensberger and Robert Russ as Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. There were the usual committees which, under the able chairman, fulfilled their various functions. The council sponsored the informal dances in the cafeteria. These have been the means of bringing students together for good times and at the same time have furnished the council with money to meet its Hnancial obligations. The weekly broadcasts were an important duty of student council and this year, through the cooperation of members of the faculty, each department of the school pre- sented one program. Check room attendants, ushers for various public performances and guides were fur- nished the school by the council members. ' The honor keys awarded to members of the graduating class are sponsored by the student council with the cooperation of the Senior Class. These honor keys are awarded on the basis of scholarship and outstanding work in extra-curricula activities. To win a key, a student must have participated in three of four fields of activity. Each student must hold a high scholastic record and in addition must have served in athletics, or class activities, or school projects. Credit is given for work on the publica- tions, on student council, on class' committees, in dramatics performances and in various other fields. In short, the pupil who receives an honor key has helped to uphold the best standards and traditions of the school. I With Commencement in 1937, the Student Council completes a successful year in which it has tried to improve conditions, raise standards and carry on the torch of service given it by student.councils of the past. 75 1937 The l-li-Y Club Under the supervision of Mr. John Bower, boys' director of the Y. M. C. A., the Hi-Y Club has enjoyed a very successful year during 1936-1937. The officers of the club were as follows: George Riegel, Presidentg Arthur Woernle, Vice Presidentg John Allen, Secretary, and Harry Lunt, Treasurer. As advisers of the club, the Rev. Ralph May- berry, Mr. John Hoshauer, and Mr. Robert Smink have rendered able assistance. Interesting talks have been given by a number of speakers at the regular weekly meet- ings. Mark Good of tlie Sun-Gazette Company gave an address on sports. Barton A. McGarvey presented an interesting description of a trip through the Inca Indian territory in South America. Charles R. Bidelspacher, a local attorney, outlined his experiences in law school and taking the bar examinations. The club carried out its usual custom of decorating the city for the season's big foot- ball games. Many of the club members attended the North Eastern Central District Hi-Y Con- ference held at Shamokin. These members had many interesting reports on their return. One dinner meeting was held at which Randolph H. Thompson, Game Commissioner from State College, was the chief speaker. Mr. Thompson illustrated his talk with moving pictures of trapping. Other speakers of the evening were Samuel Casner, State Game Commissioner, and John B. Ross, district chief of Game Wardens. Two dances were held during the year, a Christmas Dance held December 23, at the Park Ballroom and an Easter Dance held March 29, at the Lycoming Hotel Ballroom. Proceeds from these dances were used to promote a city-wide Marble Contest held on April 24, and also a nearby cities' Marble Contest to be held in June. The Hi-Y Club also entertained the Williamsport Sightless Club at a party held in May. 74 The l-li-Tri Club Hi-Tri started the 1936-37 term with a new regime under Miss Nancy Lewis who replaced Miss Gladys Larson as Girl Reserve Secretary of the local Y. W. C. A. Miss Lewis was assisted by Miss Florence Laubscher and Miss Miriam Wendle, faculty advisers from NV. H. S. Leading the club there was a cabinet of twenty members headed by Eleanor Frith, President, Eloise Irvin, Vice Presidentg Jean Kline, Secretary, and Doris Shronk, Treasurer. Sue Rathmell, program chairman, planned many interesting meetings, including a series of interest groups held during the first semester. These groups were led by Mrs. Van Brown, Miss Fisher, Miss Cook, and Miss Gluck. Under the direction of the social committee headed by Betty Jane Clark, Hi-Tri sponsored its usual dances at the Park Ballroom and the Lycoming Hotel. Hi Tri's service chairman, Betty Kreamer, very efficiently took charge of distributing Thanksgiving baskets to needy families and giving a Christmas party for underprivileged children. The annual Teachers' Tea was very successful this year under the direction of Elinor Derr, hospitality chairman. Ac the end of the first semester the following officers were elected to serve from Feb. 1, 1937, to Feb. 1, 1938: President, Jean Antesg Vice President, Elinor Derrg Secre- tary, Sarah Marley, Treasurer, Gertrude Bosch. The new cabinet planned a series of Know Your Cityv tours for the second semester, with interesting speakers after each tour. The Dad and Daughter banquet was the usual success, as was the Mother and Daughter Tea. The annual Mid-Winter Girl Reserve Conference was held at Hazleton in April to avoid the inclement weather of February. As usual, Hi-Tri sent a fine delegation. This year Hi-Tri undertook a very worth-while project in the decorating and fur- nishing of a Girls' Room in the Y. W. for the exclusive use of Hi-Tri members. Under the direction of Miss Eva L. Keller, head of the Art Department of Curtin Junior High School, the girls painted this room to resemble the deck of a ship. As usual, Hi-Tri closed the year with a Spring Dance and a Senior Farewell, while the girls look forward to a gala two weeks at Camp Kline at the close of the school term. 75 1937 Thu Senior Girls' Chorus iirrl limi' Svsilngn-i', lit'ilVl'I'.
